The City of Johannesburg (CoJ), Emergency Management Services Department has the following Internship opportunity available for a period NOT exceeding eighteen (18) months.
The details are as follows:
1. Department: Emergency Management Services
Branch: Pro Active Services (Inspector)
Designation: Intern
Salary Range: R8 329.29 pm (cost to company, basic salary, no benefits)
Appointment Requirements:
• Grade 12/N3;
• Higher Certificate in Fire Technology (SAESI) or Level 3 Certificate I.F.E or NQF Level 5 (T1) completed towards National Diploma in Fire Technology;
• Basic Computer literacy (Word, Excel);

Primary Function: Ensure that an effective and efficient Fire Safety services as per statutory requirements is provided within the City and to ensure that all the processes that are incorporated into daily inspections.
Key Learning Areas: Receive, scrutinize, evaluate, comment and provide feedback on fire protection plans for buildings. Perform inspections within the assigned area of responsibility. Ensure that all administrative matters are dealt with. Assist with conducting Fire Investigations. Assist and guide the public in terms of events, fire safety and EMS related issues.

Primary Function: Lead and manage the Pro-active Services and PIER Unit by coordinating and ensuring the implementation of strategic objectives and policies to enable the directorate to successfully achieve its mandate in relation to EMS activities. Take responsibility for coordinating, managing, directing and overseeing the development and delivering of instruction intended to educate and inform the public regarding fire and life safety education and functions of EMS through the use of media and relevant communication networks with the objective of decreasing fatalities and mortalities.
Key Learning Areas: Ensure policies and procedures are implemented and communicated to the relevant stakeholder so that Pro-Active Services and PIER unit strategic imperatives of the sector are met; Ensure the effective compliance with all relevant regulations, standing orders and legislation that guide the dissemination of public information, education and relations and its mechanisms; Assist with the implementation of strategic planning to ensure that it is aligned with the agreed business model and said objectives; Work with PIER officers within the Strategic & Business Planning Technical and Business Development; Disseminates information within the BESAFE Centre and provides reports detailing various interventions and outcomes within the region; Participate in management of large scale incidents by physically responding to the scene and reporting to the incident management system under the guidance of the PIER officer; Contribute towards the development of policy and standards for public information; Liaise and partner with the media on a wide range of media-related matters; Assist PIER officer to Manage, coordinate and control all PIER administration, including the BESAFE Centre as per policy and strategy; Assist PIER officer to Manage and ensure the implementation of the Injury Prevention Framework; Help PIER officer to evaluate the effectiveness of PIER interventions; Be actively involved in major incidents within Operations or similar activities on request by PIER officer; Participate in national, provincial or local special events; Assist with management and controls of all PIER assets . Ensure management of all the asset register for PIER training and development.
Leading Competencies: Work under the supervision of PIER officer and able be to work extra hours if required to do so and on weekends when required. Work under pressure. Positive attitude and self-motivated.

Conduct research on the new trends and development in the emergency management services environment and recommend necessary improvements to the departmental business processes, procedures, policies, strategy and service delivery model, in order to ensure an emergency service that is current in terms of the industry best practices and relevant to CoJ community changing needs.

Collaborate with the Business Planning and Reporting and Performance Management, Quality Assurance, Monitoring and Evaluation Specialists in the planning and development of the Public Safety business plan and score card. Monitor and evaluate Public Safety SDBIP implementation. Maintain appropriate documentation of research results as required by research protocol.
