The Department of Medical Biosciences (MBS) is comprised of the three interrelated disciplines of Physiology, Anatomy, and Medical Microbiology.  Housed within the Faculty of Science, the Department offers service courses to the Faculties of Dentistry, Community and Health Sciences, and the School of Pharmacy at the undergraduate level and across Faculties at the postgraduate level.

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas:

  • Facilitate learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Physiology
  • Be able to teach specific Physiology content across the various modules of MBS
  • Conduct research and publish in the field of Physiology
  • Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate supervision
  • Provide academic leadership and administration
  • Undertake curriculum development and assessment
  • Participate in community engagement and outreach
  • Play a role in the administrative activities of the Department and Faculty Fulfil any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department

 

Minimum Requirements

  • MSc qualification in the research field of Physiology and registered for a PhD in Physiology with a clear plan for completion
  • Experience in facilitating learning and teaching in the field of Physiology
  • Evidence of relevant high-quality, peer-reviewed research outputs
  • A record of postgraduate research supervision at Honours level
  • Evidence of active participation in community engagement activity integrated with learning and teaching and/or research.

The Institute for Microbial Biotechnology and Metagenomics (IMBM) is a self-funded flagship research entity within the Department of Biotechnology. Renowned for advancing high-impact, interdisciplinary research in microbial biotechnology and bioinnovation, IMBM’s work is strategically aligned with both national imperatives and global scientific frontiers. The Institute contributes meaningfully to undergraduate teaching, while playing a central role in postgraduate training, infrastructure stewardship, and the cultivation of research excellence. Through cutting-edge “omics” approaches and industry-driven microbial technologies, IMBM drives UWC’s strategic research agenda via well-established national and international collaborations

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas:

  • Facilitate learning and teaching at undergraduate levels in biochemistry
  • Undertake curriculum development and assessment
  • Lead independent high-impact research initiatives aligned with the institute’s strategic focus areas, enhancing international visibility and academic reputation  
  • Undertake undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral supervision in microbial biotechnology contributing to research productivity and capacity building
  • Provide academic leadership and administration
  • Participate in community engagement and outreach
  • Contribute meaningfully to the financial sustainability of the IMBM beyond the scope of individual research projects. This includes securing external and donor funding to support operational and strategic activities, cultivating industry partnerships, leading collaborative grant initiatives, and advancing income-generating platforms such as core research facilities, contract research services, and intellectual property commercialization.
  • Fulfil any other duties as assigned by the IMBM Director

 

Minimum Requirements


Minimum Requirements - Associate Professor:

  • PhD in the field of Microbiology, Biochemistry or a closely related discipline
  • Sustained excellence in facilitating learning and teaching, including curriculum design, within the field of biotechnology, with a particular emphasis on Biochemistry
  • A strong record of quality, internationally peer reviewed publications as the principal investigator in the field of microbial biotechnology
  • An excellent record of successful postgraduate supervision at MSc and PhD level
  • A demonstrated track record of securing competitive funding from diverse external sources as the principal investigator
  • Evidence of expertise, national standing, and an international presence in the field of microbial biotechnology
  • Strong contribution to institutional service is required, along with evidence of leadership in professional associations
  • The integration of community engagement with learning and teaching and/or research

 

For the post of Senior Lecturer, the following minimum requirements shall apply:

  • PhD in the field of Microbiology, Biochemistry or a closely related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching within the field of biotechnology, with a particular emphasis on Biochemistry
  • A sustained record of quality peer reviewed publications in high impact journals, in the field of microbial biotechnology
  • Record of securing competitive funding as the principal investigator
  • Evidence of a developing research leadership profile in microbial biotechnology
  • A record of successful postgraduate supervision at the Honours and Masters level
  • Active contribution to institutional committees at the departmental, faculty, or university level
  • Evidence of initiating community engagement activity integrated with learning and teaching and/or research.

Applications for the post of Coordinator: Living-Learning at Reslife, are invited from dynamic and vibrant professionals who constantly strive for personal growth, self-improvement, and excellent service to others. It is essential that applicants can demonstrate relevant student housing experience at a tertiary level; they must be client and service oriented and passionate about students and their curricular and co-curricular development and well-being.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the planning, implementation, and maintenance of Living-Learning Communities for the UWC Residential Services (RS) (including private accommodation), as well as the development of monitoring and evaluation practices for co-curricular (training, development, and support) initiatives across Student Communities. The incumbent is furthermore responsible for driving holistic, research-informed academic and psychosocial support programmes and using research activities to develop impact assessments around these programmes.

 

This includes but is not necessarily limited to:

  • Coordination of all Living-Learning and psychosocial support services offered to students living in UWC student communities (includes private accommodation);
  • Human resource administration and coordination of staff in the Living-Learning Office;
  • Overall coordination and oversight for collaboration between the RS department and the Social Work department in term of the final year Social Work department interns, and, overall supervision for RS Counselling resources caseloads;
  • Reconciliation and reporting on all RS research – based practices and activities in line with SDS;
  • Strategic outputs (includes but is not limited to all programming monitoring and evaluations, RS surveys and other student and student-staff feedback in respect of RS’ Living-Learning strategy);
  • Cultivating relationships with various faculty members and other departments for sustained involvement in academically related activities in the Living-Learning spaces.

 

Minimum Requirements


Qualification and Experience:

  • Honours Degree in Psychology or Degree in Social Work (NQF 8);
  • Current SACSSP or HPCSA registration;
  • 5 years relevant experience;
  • 2 years demonstrated evidence of involvement in training/workshop/seminar development and facilitation with large and small groups;
  • 2 years supervision experience in a clinical/counseling setting;
  • Familiarity with working in an academic/residence environment in the Higher Education context as well as working directly with tertiary students in the co-curricular space;
  • Demonstrated ability to network across various organisation;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license;
  • Must be prepared to work after hours when required.

The Department of Infrastructure & Engineering seeks to employ a skilled, knowledgeable and resourceful individual to coordinate services on a diverse range of construction projects. The position will suit someone with strong planning and monitoring skills, who is energetic and pro-active, and who has a construction projects background. This post reports to the Manager Projects  .

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day coordination and administrative support to the Project Manager and project team
  • Act as a coordination link between internal departments, consultants, contractors and service providers
  • Schedule and attend site visits, meetings and inspections with relevant stakeholders
  • Follow up on deliverables, submissions and outstanding actions from service providers
  • Assist with purchase requisitions, quotations, procurement documentation and service requests in line with university procedures
  • Assist with quality inspections, snag lists and follow-up of corrective actions
  • Monitor and track project progress against plan (Time, Cost, Scope and Quality) and implement corrections as necessary
  • Support compliance with health, safety, environmental and building regulations by coordinating required documentation and submissions
  • Ensure an orderly and comprehensive project close out process
  • Monitor project quality and resolve non-conformance items
  • Monitor service deliverables and sign off on receipt
  • Facilitate building and campus access
  • Monitor and report on project risks
  • Plan, coordinate and integrate the activities of internal resources
  • Compile and distribute meeting minutes and regular project progress reports
  • Maintain accurate project records, filing systems and document
  • Arrange and administer all professional services (internal and external)
  • Draft communications and notices for publication

 

Minimum Requirements

  • B Tech/3-year degree (NQF 7 or equivalent) in a Built Environment. (For Example: architecture, quantity surveying, construction management etc)
  • 2-5 years’ relevant experience in the Construction or Building industry
  • Valid drivers’ license (with 2 years of driving experience)

 

Knowledge, skills and capabilities:

  • Proven track record on small to medium scale construction projects
  • Strong computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Office and construction and project management software
  • Good Planning and organisational skills
  • Good knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental regulations
  • Good knowledge of building regulations and standards ISO Standards
  • Strong communication skills (verbal & written)
  • Ability to work under pressure with adherence to deadlines
  • Knowledge of JBCC or other forms of construction contracts

 

Added Advantage:

  • Knowledge of the functioning of the Higher Education sector would be advantageous
  • Knowledge of PROCSA Contracts
