The Institute for Social and Health Sciences (ISHS) is an Africa-centred, community-engaged, transdisciplinary institute of excellence in the social and health sciences. The Institute hosts the South African Medical Research Council-Unisa Violence, Injury and Social Asymmetries Research Unit (VISARU), which focuses on violence and injury, that are major drivers to the nation's disease burden. VISARU conducts multi-disciplinary research on socio-structural drivers of injury and their impact on vulnerable populations. ISHS seeks a junior researcher for VISARU to conduct research and support the development of outputs from community-engaged research and advocacy projects. 
 
Requirements:
  • A Honours degree or equivalent NQF level 8 qualification in a relevant field 
  • At least 1 accredited research outputs in the last 5 years OR co-authorship in the last 3 years 
  • Ability to collaborative in research activities 
  • Proven proficiency in the use of MS Office Suite 
  • Excellent knowledge of Research Methodology 
  • Excellent knowledge of software packages for research purposes e.g. SPSS or Atlas.ti 
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) 
  • Good interpersonal skills 
  • Valid Driver’s license 
 
Recommendation:

  • Ability to work outside office hours when necessary 
 
Duties:
  • Assists in guiding the research agenda of the Head of Institute 
  • Identifying and conducting research activities within the Head of Institute and related research interest groups 
  • Compiles a personal development plan in order to increase expertise and recognition in the identified research area 
  • Identifies research problems, supports development or contribute to research proposals and conducts collaborative research as well as multi-, inter- and trans- disciplinary (MIT) and reflexive research 
  • Participates in relevant research interests groups 
  • Participates in the development of funding proposals to support the VISARU’s research projects 
  • Participates in seminars, research colloquia, reads papers and conferences and co-authored at least 1accredited research output in a period of three years 
  • Develops networks and collaborative research projects with institutional, national and international colleagues and students 
  • Oversees the accurate and effective administration of research matters 
  • Identifies partnerships with communities in order to provide expertise for the benefit of the communities 
  • Participates and promotes a culture of engagement and networking with institutional, national and international networks and organisations 
  • Participates in institutional, national and international task teams and professional bodies
  • Peer reviews academic outputs and research reports

The Institute for Social and Health Sciences (ISHS) is an African-centred, community-engaged, transdisciplinary research institute of excellence in the social and health sciences. It hosts the South African Medical Research Council-Unisa Violence, Injury and Social Asymmetries Research Unit
(VISARU), which focuses on violence and injury, key contributors to the country’s disease burden. VISARU conducts multi-disciplinary research on injury-related socio-structural factors, including community marginalisation, energy poverty, infrastructural inequities, and social inequalities. The ISHS is seeking to appoint three data collectors for VISARU to support research projects by gathering and organising data.
 
Requirements
• Grade 12
• Minimum 2 years experience working with data collection and capturing in a research environment
• Ability to collaborate on research activities
• Proven proficiency in the use of MS Office Suite
 
Responsibilities and Expectations
• Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines
• Engage partner communities
• Exhibit good administration and organisational skills
• Able to communicate in English and other South African Official Languages.
• Exhibit good written and verbal communication skills
• Exhibit effective time management skills
• Tertiary qualification will be an added advantage

Duties:
• Supporting the Project Coordinator on logistics for data collection, including scheduling appointments and reserving space for focus groups
• Complying with study protocols and data collection and data management procedures
• Obtaining informed consent from study participants
• Supporting in the implementation of data collection activities from a variety of sources,
• Supporting with the implementation of training activities and support events
• Maintaining and keeping record of contact information database of study participants' events and key stakeholders
• Supporting in community engagement activities to enable quality data collection
• Ensuring that data is quality checked, organised, and accurately captured
• Assisting researchers with the transcribing of interviews Assisting researchers with the cleaning and organisation of data to prepare it for analysis
• Capturing data into computer databases or spreadsheets Follow up on calls and notices
