BACKGROUND:
The Department of Actuarial Science offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Actuarial Science through which exemptions are offered from the examinations of the Actuarial Society of South Africa for the A100, A200, A300 subjects and some of the F100 subjects. The Department collaborates with several departments including Economics, Statistics, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics and Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering as well as the UP Natural Hazard Centre on research projects related to finance, risk management, insurance and banking.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Lecturing and participating in curriculum development at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • Participating in the undertaking and supervision of research projects;
  • Actively contributing towards research development and producing research output to attract research funding;
  • Participating in administrative duties within the Department. 
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
 
Lecturer:
  • A qualified actuary with the Actuarial Society of South Africa (FASSA) (or members of other Actuarial Societies e.g., FFA, FIA, FIAA who are prepared to obtain a FASSA) with at least three recent years’ actuarial work experience;
  • A relevant postgraduate degree or to be registered for postgraduate study during the first year of employment at UP.
Senior Lecturer:
  • A qualified actuary with the Actuarial Society of South Africa (FASSA) (or members of other Actuarial Societies e.g., FFA, FIA, FIAA who are prepared to obtain a FASSA) with at least five years’ experience in the banking or insurance industries, or other financial risk specializations; 
  • A relevant postgraduate degree or to be registered for postgraduate study during the first year of employment at UP;
  • Academic experience in actuarial teaching or research supervision.
Associate Professor:
  • A qualified actuary with the Actuarial Society of South Africa (FASSA) (or members of other Actuarial Societies e.g., FFA, FIA, FIAA who are prepared to obtain a FASSA) with at least five years’ experience in the banking or insurance industries, or other financial risk specializations;
  • A PhD degree and actuarial experience of at least ten years’ post qualification and a strong record of international peer reviewed publications;
  • Significant experience in the banking or insurance industries, or other financial risk specializations;
  • Academic experience in actuarial teaching or research supervision;
  • Experience in the delivery of projects and participation in academic and/or professional networks, with the potential to attract research funding (highly recommended).
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Technical actuarial subject knowledge;
  • Computer programming proficiency;
  • Positive interpersonal relationship skills;
  • Excellent communication skills.
 
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • At least three recent years’ actuarial post qualification experience (as a FASSA or equivalent);
  • A postgraduate degree or qualification;
  • Experience in the banking or insurance industries, or other financial risk specialisations;
  • Experience in the delivery of projects and participation in academic and/or professional networks, with the potential to attract research funding.
 
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes.

The Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development (DAEERD) offers top- quality undergraduate and post-graduate training in various fields such as agricultural economics, agribusiness management, agricultural extension, rural development, and environmental economics; our sought-after postgraduate programme in Agricultural Economics has been host to the Collaborative Masters in Agriculture and Applied Economics for 15 years, training over 1500 students from across Africa. Our research programmes address practical, relevant and multi-disciplinary/sectoral problems and provide scientific, evidence-based research for policy/strategy aimed at improving incomes, food security, natural resources management, livelihoods for households, and furthering the development of the African continent.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules;
  • Supervising honours, master’s and PhD students;
  • Conducting research and publishing articles in leading accredited journals;
  • Raising funds to support existing research programmes and/or initiating new ones;
  • Community engagement;
  • Academic administration; and
  • Other duties assigned by the Head of Department. 
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Senior Lecturer: 
  • Bachelor’s, Masters and PhD in Agricultural Extension;
  • Five (5) years of teaching and research experience in Agricultural Extension;
  • At least ten (10) publications in accredited journal(s);
  • Evidence of successful supervision/co-supervision of master’s students; and
  • Evidence of community engagement and project leadership. 
Associate Professor (same as for Senior Lecturer, PLUS): 
  • A proven record of successful supervision/co-supervision of PhD students in Agricultural Extension;
  • Three (3) more years of teaching and research experience in a tertiary/research institution;
  • Recognition by peers as a researcher with high academic standing;
  • A comprehensive publication record and experience leading joint research projects;
  • A record of collaboration with local and international scientists; and
  • Proven experience in fundraising for research.
Professor (same as for Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer, PLUS): 
  • Proven graduation record of PhD students in Agricultural Extension;
  • Two (2) more years of teaching and research experience;
  • A well-established and internationally recognised research record; and
  • Evidence of designing and implementing own curriculum content.

OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Social Work and Criminology strives for excellence in teaching and learning, research and community engagement. The Department offers prospective students the options of both undergraduate and postgraduate comprehensive coursework as well as research degree programmes in Social Work and Criminology.
 
POSITION 
The University seeks to appoint an Associate Professor/Professor and Head of Department. The Head of Department appointment will be additional to the successful candidate’s academic appointment. 
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
  • The strategic, academic and operational management of the Department;
  • Facilitating the development and implementation of a collective vision for Social Work and Criminology aligned with the broader strategic goals of the Faculty of Humanities and the University of Pretoria;
  • Planning and managing the academic and research programmes of the Department and enhancing its research profile; 
  • Promoting high standards of academic education and best practice in methods of delivery in keeping with transformational imperatives;
  • Promoting multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary teaching and learning, research, and community engagement; 
  • Growing and strengthening postgraduate programmes and expanding postgraduate student numbers in the department;
  • Playing an active role as an academic leader of the disciplines of Social Work and Criminology at national and international levels; 
  • Recruiting, managing and mentoring the staff of the Department and actively supporting their continuous development; 
  • Teaching and postgraduate supervision commensurate with other responsibilities;
  • Managing the Department’s budget, as well as leading and supporting fundraising activities.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • At least three years of practice experience as a registered social worker in addition to an  academic career;
  • A doctorate in Social Work;
  • A proven national and international research and publication record;
  • A proven record of postgraduate supervision; 
  • A proven record of teaching excellence; 
  • A proven record of community engagement;
  • An appropriate vision for the Department;
  • Registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP), or eligible to register with the SACSSP; 
  • Managerial experience in a tertiary institution  context;
  • The candidate must possess the requisite qualifications and experience to be eligible for appointment as Associate Professor or Professor in the Department of Social Work and Criminology at the University of Pretoria, the assessment of which is based on several factors, including teaching, research and postgraduate supervision, community engagement, academic administration and academic citizenship;
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES)
  • Academic status in the relevant discipline (social work) and confirmed through an NRF rating (or potential to be rated);
  • Experience in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration;

  • International recognition;
  • Strong leadership skills, 
  • Sound interpersonal skills and articulate communication skills;
  • Fluency in English;

REMUNERATION AND APPOINTMENT 
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
 
The Head of Department is a term appointment for four (4) years. External candidates will also be considered for a permanent academic appointment in a suitable academic department.

OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Historical and Heritage Studies offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses and degrees in History and Heritage and Cultural Tourism. Students are equipped with knowledge, skills, and professional training to succeed in their studies and professional careers. The Department is dedicated to educating and training graduates who can think critically and creatively, solve problems and are adaptable to change. The focus is on developing future historians, museologists, heritage and cultural tourism specialists, entrepreneurs, and various other professions through theoretical understanding and experiential learning techniques. In pursuing knowledge creation and distribution, staff members engage with several academic, community, industry, and government partners to ensure that students are exposed to relevant information.  Working  individually and  in teams, staff  are involved in research  on various topics within their fields of interest, and are also encouraged to work in a transdisciplinary way.
 
POSITION 
The University seeks to appoint an Associate Professor/Professor and Head of Department. The Head of Department appointment will be additional to the successful candidate’s academic appointment. 
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • A track record of, and commitment to, excellence in teaching and learning;
  • An appropriate vision for enhancing the Department’s standing and diverse profile, both nationally and internationally; 
  • Strong academic administration experience;
  • A commitment to preserve and expand the profile and impact of the Department’s existing offerings in both History, and Heritage and Cultural Tourism;
  • The candidate must possess the requisite qualifications and experience to be eligible for appointment as Associate Professor or Professor in the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies at the University of Pretoria, the assessment of which is based on several factors, including teaching, research and postgraduate supervision, community engagement, academic administration and academic citizenship;

REMUNERATION AND APPOINTMENT 
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
 
The Head of Department is a term appointment for four (4) years. External candidates will also be considered for a permanent academic appointment in a suitable academic department.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be expected to fulfil the duties of a Lecturer in the Department Early Childhood Education as described in the minimum requirements. These duties include:
  • Curriculum development and lecturing of modules in the programme(s) based in the Department;
  • Pursuing research activities such as own research, research-based publications and the supervision of postgraduate students registered in the Department;
  • Developing, presenting and co-ordinating undergraduate and postgraduate courses for pre-service and in-service teachers and other students for contact and distance programmes;
  • Mentoring students for practice teaching/work integrated learning;
  • Using a learning management system to develop and present courses;
  • Presenting lectures and programmes in an E-learning environment;
  • Providing a significant contribution to research outputs, postgraduate teaching and supervision.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Lecturer:
  • M Ed in Early Childhood Care and Education/ ECD Studies/Foundation Phase, or equivalent degree;
  • One to three years teaching experience in Early Childhood Care and Education, ECD, Foundation Phase, or equivalent;
  • Evidence of school-based or related tertiary level experience;
  • Experience and expertise in curriculum development in Early Childhood Care and Education, ECD, Foundation Phase, or equivalent;
  • Evidence of some research experience;
  • Evidence of involvement in community engagement programmes;
  • Knowledge and experience of facilitation in an E-learning environment
  • Evidence of ability to conduct research
 
Senior lecturer
  • PhD in Early Childhood Care and Education/ ECD Studies/Foundation Phase, or equivalent degree;
  • 3 - 5 years' of Higher Education Institution teaching experience in Early Childhood Care and Education, ECD, Foundation Phase, or equivalent;
  • Teaching portfolio and Peer review reports of teaching. Student evaluations,
  • 6-7 publications (journals, book chapters, Books) of which 4 should be in a mix of internationally and nationally accredited journals. 1 publication should be sole- authored;
  • Evidence of postgraduate supervision. At least 3 students supervised to completion at Masters level;
  • Community engagement in a related field or Work-integrated involvement/ mentorship;
  • Experience in academic administration and/or Participation in departmental committees, possibly faculty participation;
  • Experience and expertise in curriculum development in Early Childhood Care and Education, ECD, Foundation Phase, or equivalent.
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer:
  • Knowledge and experience in Early Childhood Development, Early Childhood Care and Education, and Foundation Phase Education or equivalent;
  • Knowledge and experience in health, safety, and nutrition in early childhood care and education;
  • Knowledge and experience in programmes on parenting and care within family and community settings;
  • Appropriate language and communication skills;
  • Ability to apply knowledge and skills in teaching and supervision;
  • Ability to work as an individual and in a team.
 
 
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer:
  • Teaching experience at a Higher Education Institution in Early Childhood Development and Child Care;
  • Knowledge and experience in application of language curriculum and indigenous knowledge systems in Early Childhood Development and Care programmes;
  • Knowledge and experience in integration of technology in child development and care programmes;
  • PhD in early childhood development and child care studies, or equivalent degree or currently registered for a PhD in related programme;
  • Experience in supervision of teaching practice, work-integrated learning, or related programmes in child care and family studies;
  • Ability and/or experience in conducting own research, and evidence of research publications;
  • Experience in curriculum development initiatives;
  • Experience of supervision of postgraduate students.
 
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Managing and reporting quality management systems of all specialist units that work directly with library service provision to all faculties, all students, researchers, and staff;
  • Applying measures and innovative strategies for the audit of quality management systems, processes, and products;
  • Developing and implementing quality assurance policies and procedures to ensure product and service quality meets library standards;
  • Providing strategic leadership and management of business intelligence measures;
  • Providing business data analytics and insights;
  • Presenting data/information positively, clearly, and accurately;
  • Aligning the library’s marketing initiatives to the work done in the Department of Library Services; and ensure the use of appropriate channels;
  • Overseeing processes related to user engagements, user experiences, and the administration of institution-wide surveys;

  • Providing oversight for the design, and language editing of publications, posters, brochures, and other marketing materials for the DLS, ensuring high standards and consistent branding;
  • Providing the required leadership and oversight on fundraising activities in collaboration with the Department of Institutional Advancement (DIA) on fundraising projects.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A four-year B degree in Library and Information Science or an equivalent relevant qualification;
  • Relevant Honours;
  • A total of six years’ of experience in an academic or research library of which two years’ must be in a supervisory/management role.
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Knowledge of user experience principles;
  • Proven experience in business intelligence, working with usage statistics;
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices in library marketing and quality assurance;
  • Quality Assurance standards and methodologies for quality assurance in library services and knowledge of assessment tools and techniques to evaluate library services and user satisfaction;
  • Sound written and verbal communication skills;
  • Presentation skills;
  • Proficiency in digital marketing tools;
  • Data Analysis: Ability to analyse data and metrics;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong skills in MS Office skills, particularly Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Institutional knowledge.
 
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or relevant discipline;
  • Experience in building automated performance trackers and dashboards;
  • Experience in writing funding or grant proposals.
