SENIOR SISTER - OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH

Position Purpose
To implement an effective occupational health programme in line with planned objectives.
Position Outputs
1. Ensure completion and follow-up of pre-employment medical examinations complying with relevant legislation, environmental job demands and physical ability to perform work.
2. Manage the implementation of medical surveillance programmes of the business based on the Health Risk Assessment (HRA) outcomes as prescribed in relevant legislation and policies. These programmes include but not limited to periodical medicals, triggered medicals, biological monitoring and exit medical examinations.
3. Consult with Head of Safety, Health and Environment of environmental and safety concerns which requires escalation.
4. Management of injuries on duty - verify extent of injury or occupational disease. Monitor progress and co-ordinate the necessary health services for the rehabilitation of the injured employee in their return to work.
5. Promote and perform prompt and an effective medical assistance to employees in acute and chronic situations.
6. Ensure compliance with all statutory requirements, company policies and procedures.
7. Investigate illness and injury episodes and trends to determine health and safety needs of the employees.
8. Utilises data collected during the assessment phase to make a nursing diagnosis related to occupational diseases and hazards.
9. Assumes accountability for own professional development to enhance professional growth and maintain competency.
10. Assist with wellness development and management - conduct a health promotion programme on a regular basis. Assist with HIV peer educators training and support. Condom distribution.
11. Supervise the development and maintenance of accurate up-to-date medical records and/or medical reports to track employee health/illness and provide the business with the needed data, ensuring employee confidentiality at all times.
12. Regular checks of all drug registers, medicines permit etc.
13. Implement all clinic activities as planned by the Human Environment Manager.
14. Carry out all health-related activities as determined by business needs.
15. Promotes health communication and health literacy for behaviour change.
16. Implementation programmes that support a positive lifestyle and individual efforts to lower the risk of disease and injury.
17. Utilises knowledge of health and wellness to promote health at a group, individual and social level in terms of workplace stressors and hazards.
18. Advocates for the awareness of employees in terms of workplace health hazards and/or occupational stressors based on the health risk assessment specific to each work environment.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree/Diploma in Nursing Science. - BTech in Occupational Health or Diploma in Occupational Health Nursing. - Dispensing License. - Certificate in Audiometry. - Certificate in Spirometry. - Code 8 Driver’s License. - Minimum of 3 – 5 years relevant work experience.

Position Purpose
Provision of onsite health care services to Transnet National Ports Authority and other Port users’ employees to ensure employee wellness, reduce absenteeism thereby improve productivity and to provide Occupational Health Care as per the Legislation.
Position Outputs
1. Consult employees and record all findings to ensure accurate information is captured in compliance to legal requirements
2. Trace chronic treatment defaulters to ensure that compliance to treatment is adhered to.
3. Empower individuals by giving health education and conducting counselling sessions
4. Check and countersign drug registers with registered nurse as per legal requirement
5. Attend to emergencies to prevent complications and save lives.
6. Replenish first aid boxes for use at the depots
7. Compile and analyse data to give meaningful reports
8. Assist doctor with minor procedures
9. Conduct medical examinations to ensure that suitable employees are placed in the correct job as per inherent requirements
10. Sort clients according to needs for the doctor
11. Check medical equipment to ensure optimal utilisation
12. Filing and safekeeping of medical files to ensure confidentiality.
13. Assist in ordering clinic supplies to ensure that all employee needs are addressed.
14. Check stock shortages to ensure facility is well supplied.
15. Establish rapport with employees by ensuring privacy and always maintaining confidentiality of information.
16. Update information on the computer system if necessary.
17. Working with different departments to ensure employee needs are met (EAP, HR, and Management).
18. Implement duties delegated by the Senior Sister.
Qualifications and Experience
Qualifications, Experience & Inherent Job Requirements • Grade 12. • Diploma in Nursing or 4 years B CUR Degree in Nursing or Occupational Nursing. • Dispensing License. • Certificate in Audiometry, Spirometry. • Valid driver’s licence - Code 8. • Computer Literacy. • 3 – 5 years relevant experience in Occupational Health Nursing.
