CLIMATE CHANGE EXPERT (18 MONTHS CONTRACT)

Responsibilities/Duties: Enhance Stellenbosch Municipality's capacity to adapt to climate change, improve climate resilience, and sup-port citizens and key stakeholders in adapting to current and future impacts of climate change ● This will be achieved through developing comprehensive strategies, improving services, and fostering international collaboration, especially with its municipal partners Karlsruhe, Germany ● The project aims to address the administration’s capacity, provide better support for vulnerable populations, and create a more resilient community environment ● Adaptation Planning - Develop and implement climate change adaptation plans tailored to Stellenbosch's specific challenges and vulnerabilities. This may involve identifying infrastructure improvements, land-use planning changes, and community resilience strategies ● Climate Vulnerability Assessment - Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the municipality's vulnerability to climate change, identifying key areas and sectors at risk ● Mitigation Strategies -Introduce and promote strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the municipality. This could involve energy efficiency programs, renewable energy adoption, and sustainable transportation initiatives ● Data Collection and Monitoring - Establish systems for collecting and monitoring climate-related data to track changes over time. This includes temperature, precipitation, sea level, and other relevant indicators ● Policy Development - Identifying the need for appropriate policies. Assist in the delivery of the trade effluent compliance monitoring and sampling programme • Demonstrate the ability to work without supervision and deal effectively with incidents that occur on Trade premises, the network, rivers and Stellenbosch Municipality Infrastructure • Recognises when there is a need to escalate to the Supervisor and present the issues and recommendations • Responsible for maintaining any equipment used in sampling and monitoring of trade discharges in accordance with QMS & regulation requirements • To investigate, or assist the Supervisor, in any investigation concerning unsatisfactory or illegal discharges to sewer • This will involve formal sampling, taking of statements, and able to represent Stellenbosch Municipality in any subsequent legal proceedings if required • Assist the SPO in the compilation of monthly Trade Effluent reports, contracts, accounts, notices and penalties and all administrative duties relating to pollution control • Responsible for the collection of non-regulatory samples and data from WWTW that are at risk, or non-compliant, in order to assist in any investigation to deter-mine remedial action • Required to liaise closely with operational staff and Senior Process staff in the escalation of any near-miss or failed samples to ensure remedial action can be under-taken quickly and effectively with the relevant Supervisor. Responsibilities/Duties: The intern must work for the Council as part of the learning process • Be available for and participate in all learning and work experience required by the internship • Comply with the workplace policies and procedures of the council • Complete any daily logs or any written assessment tools supplied by council to record relevant workplace experience • Attend all study period and theoretical learning sessions, also after hours (evening and /Saturdays) with the education and training provider, undertake all learning conscientiously and maintain professional portfolio of evidence in accordance with the guidelines • Complete and maintain a professional portfolio of evidence in accordance with the Guidelines.

HANDYMAN: IRRIGATION

The successful incumbent will report to Foreperson: Irrigation and must have:
Minimum Requirements: Grade 10 ● 6-months of handyman and irrigation experience and 1-year relevant experience in irrigation systems and equipment knowledge ● Valid code EB or higher drivers’ licence with a valid PDPr.
Other Requirements: Proficiency in at least two of the three Western Cape official Languages (English, Afrikaans, Xhosa) ● Must be able to work in all weather conditions ● Must be able to work in a team ● Must be physically fit and healthy.
Responsibilities/Duties: Installation and maintenance of irrigation systems, maintenance of boreholes and pumps in gardens, manual watering of gardens, road reserves and the Municipal Nursery ● Repair defects to interior/exterior building surfaces and surroundings ● Maintenance and repairs to nursery facilities and surroundings. Interacting with superiors regarding repair requirements ● Repair of specific defective fittings, paint and sealing of cracks ● Removing and replacing fixtures and testing functionality. Erecting partitioning or minor screening walls. Cleaning worksites, stores equipment, tools and loading materials before departure to work site ● Record keeping and care of equipment. Placing and stacking tools and equipment in work vehicles ● Select/maintain and safely use the correct power tools for the task.
