The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is a Section 3(a) public entity under the Ministry of Environmental Affairs and is governed by a Board. The organisation is an authoritative voice for weather and climate related services in South Africa and is a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to fulfil a range of international obligations of the government. JOB SUMMARY
The incumbent will form part of a consortium of researchers from a variety of South African and international institutions seeking to establish the iDEWS (Infectious Diseases Early Warning System) Bureau with the initial aim of producing some forecast information from an existing climate-based disease modelling system and then to grow and expand this into a broader platform.
To establish the operational systems, produce and disseminate periodic infectious disease outlook bulletins emanating from the systems.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
• To develop standard operating procedures and systems for the services offered including:
- Maintaining and developing the iDEWS models in collaboration with the relevant stakeholders
- Production and dissemination of periodic climate basic disease outlook bulletins
- Data acquisition and curation
- Automation of product provision
- Protocols for publication of warnings and bulletins
- Monitoring and evaluation of outputs
• Seek funding opportunities and manage proposal writing and submission
• Co-supervise and initiate research projects aligned with the aims of the iDEWS Bureau
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
• A PhD in Biostatistics or Climate Services and Applications or Public Health
• Experience in programming and statistical methods (preferably in Research)
• Experience in project /programme management
• The ideal candidate will be competent with mathematical modelling and biostatistics
• Experience in computer programming or statistical computer packages.
• Experience in epidemiology and/or climate related sciences would be desirable

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES
• Will be required to enter into a two-year Contractual Agreement with SAWS
• Will be based at the National Institute of Communicable Diseases in Johannesburg
