VACANCY: Intellectual Property (IP) Analyst (3 year contract)

Job Purpose
To provide technical and professional assistance for the identification, management and protection of Necsa Intellectual Property (IP).
         
 
Key Performance Areas
  • Assist in the development and implementation of relevant policy, processes and procedures;
  • Compile information, record and report on Necsa IP statistics and participate in the organisational reporting process;
  • Evaluate technical/technological merit of invention disclosures (IVD’s);
  • Compile prior art and literature searches from sources not accessible to all;
  • Collaborate with researchers in finding patent information for their projects;
  • Facilitate the identification of patentable inventions or other improvements in terms of innovation disclosures;
  • Compile market research studies to inform Necsa R&D programmes;
  • Identify and manage Necsa subscriptions for IP and market information;
  • Facilitate the invention review process to determine best protection vehicle;
  • Provide technical and legal input to manage patentable inventions through application and prosecution phases into granted patents;
  • Provide analysis and support on IP matters in reviews, negotiations and IP clauses in agreements and transactions in R&TD and other Stakeholders (e,g. PE, Subsidiaries, etc.);
  • Investigate ad hoc IP infringements;
  • Establish and maintain an electronic IP pipeline database on the Necsa Nucleus system for perspective on progress, strategic management and general visibility; and
  • Compile monthly progress reports to ensure that the IP Manager is informed with regards to progress made across the business with regards to IP.

  • Advanced knowledge of patent database prior art search techniques.
  • Working knowledge of typical patent terminology.
  • Working knowledge of specification application drafting skills.
  • Working knowledge of examining skills to formulate defining memoranda.
  • Working knowledge of IP law, the Nuclear Energy Act and other applicable legislation.

Qualifications and Experience:
Qualifications
  • B.Sc (Natural sciences) degree, OR
  • BTech (Engineering).
 
Experience
  • Knowledge of innovation systems.
  • 3 to 5 years of demonstrable IP or innovation experience in a scientific environment.
