PRINCIPAL PLANNER
Park: Garden Route National Park
Description:
A vacancy currently exists for a Principal Planner at Garden Route National Park (GRNP), Regional Office, to provide a professional planning and environmental service to the GRNP in accordance with corporate policy, approved environmental management plans, appropriate norms, standards, and procedures. The successful candidate will report directly to the Regional General Manager.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree Town & Regional Planning and or/ Environmental Studies
- 6 years relevant experience Local Provincial or National Governments, Consultancy or NGOs
- Management, Report writing, Planning, and Leadership Skills.
- A sound knowledge of the NEMPA Act and other relevant legislation.
- Valid EAPASA Registration essential
- Valid SACNASP Registration (optional)
- Computer literate with a working knowledge of the Microsoft Office package.
- To have a working knowledge of relevant Environmental legislation such as NEMA: Protected Areas Act, Biodiversity Act, Integrated Coastal Management Act, Marine Living Resources Act, and other relevant environmental legislation.
- Driver's license is essential.
- Working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and other relevant legislation.
- Good communication, writing, conflict resolution, and liaison skills.
Responsibilities:
- To ensure that Park Planning is addressed in municipal integrated plans and spatial development frameworks.
- To comment on EIAs, Municipal Land Use Planning By-Law and OSCAE applications in Park buffer zones.
- To ensure environmental and heritage issues are adequately addressed within Park operations, e.g. EMPs, EIAs, and Heritage approvals required.
- To ensure that operational decisions and advice are based on scientific information and best practices.
- To assist Park and regional management in keeping abreast of planning, environmental, and heritage legislation.
- To assist with Park expansion and land consolidation initiatives and strategies.
- To disseminate information to all relevant park personnel regarding development decisions and impacts.
- To provide input to the establishment of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) and concession developments within the park.
- To provide a project management service to Parks.

SENIOR MANAGER: ENVIRONMENTAL LAW
Park: Groenkloof (Head Office)
Description:
SANParks currently offers this challenging career opportunity to an appropriately qualified and experienced person. This position will be based at Groenkloof National Park, Pretoria.
Requirements:
- Be in possession of a Legal degree (B Juris, B Proc, LLB) and an Admitted Attorney.
- 10 years in the legal field of which 5 years should be in a managerial role.
- 5 years’ experience in Environmental and Conservation law, Property law and the conveyancing process, Planning law, Administrative law (PAIA and PAJA), and interpretation of statutes.
Responsibilities:
- Provide constitutional; property, environmental, conservation, cultural heritage; and administrative law services.
- Inform and influence policy formulation and long-term planning on environmental and conservation-related issues of the organization.
- Lead, manage, and develop the human capital of the environmental and legislation section.
- Prepare budget and manage the finances of the section.
- Conduct research; provide legal opinions and provide environmental and conservation legislation guidance to the organization.
- Draft legal documents.
- To draft letters and submissions to the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment on environmental, conservation, land (property), and legislation issues.
- Manage litigation matters in compliance with and adherence to Rules of the Court in respect of environmental and legislative issues.
- To resolve potential legal disputes and negotiate settlement terms.
- Advise on alternative dispute resolution.
- Provide environmental and conservation legislative and regulatory services to the organization.
- Provide legal support to the SANParks Law Enforcement Unit.
- Ensure that Environmental Management Inspectors involved in poaching cases are legally represented at all times.
- Manage land acquisition process for the organization.
- Attend to the declaration of land as part of a national park and/or establishment of new national parks.
- Provide support to the Unit responsible for PAIA by collating information relating to the environment and conservation PAIA Requests.
- Ensure compliance with internal policies and processes in the land acquisition process.
- Develop, review, vet, and negotiate contracts and agreements relating to environmental and legislative matters as well as international instruments.
- Build; enhance and maintain stakeholder relationships.

TRADE ASSISTANT
Park: Groenkloof (Head Office)
Description:
A vacancy currently exists for a Trade assistant worker at Groenkloof National Park in the Facilities Department. The successful candidate will report to the Technical Officer.
The remuneration package includes a basic salary, based on the salary scale of a position with a Paterson B1 grade and allowances and benefits as specified in the HR Tariff Document and Conditions of Services of SANParks.
The appointment will be in accordance with EE plan targets.
Requirements:
- Grade 12 (Std 10).
- Code EB(Code 8) drivers licence.
- 1 - 3 years experience as a trade assistant.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team.
- Safety orientated, good knowledge of safe work procedures.
Responsibilities:
- General technical maintenance and upkeep of buildings.
- To inspect electrical installation for functionality and safety within the facilities environment.
- To provide preventative maintenance to limit the number of breakdowns or inconveniences to end-user.
- To execute and supervise trade-related work such as repairs or maintenance of building structures, services, roads and equipment.
- To assist with ad-hoc duties as and when required.
- Assist with stock delivery and inventory control.
- Assist with security operations as and when required.
