JUNIOR SCIENTIST – ENVIRONMENTAL GEOSCIENTIST
Reporting Line: Manager: Water and Environment  
Overall Job Purpose: To contribute towards geoscience projects in areas of environment, co-existence and sustainability in the field of geoscience and mining. Participate in project management and project implementation under guidance of more senior scientific staff.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • Undertake moderate geoscience research which includes project management and project implementation under guidance of more senior scientific staff;
  • Conduct moderate geoscience research and conducts geoscience data collection, quality control, analyses and interpretation under guidance;
  • Compilation of geoscientific products under guidance of more senior scientific staff;
  • Compile reports on research findings in line with specific disciplines under the guidance of more senior scientific staff
  • Resolves simple to moderately complex problems in a variety of geoscientific fields in line with large parts of SOP/research methodologies under the guidance or supervision;
  • Participates in geoscientific statutory and occasionally commercial projects and publishes research findings internally and/or externally;
  • Auditing of existing geoscience data and gathering of new geoscience data;
  • Data processing and interpretation toward establishing solutions towards mandated research objectives;
  • Give inputs to the development of project proposals;
  • Implement tasks under guidance or supervision;
  • Manages work allocated to self
  • Conducts formal presentations of work outputs or scientific results through technical presentations internally and externally at conferences;
  • Gives limited scientific information and recommendation to the public and private sector organisations under and supervision of a senior staff;
  • Co-publishes research finding in peer-reviewed journals or internal publications
  • Gives inputs to the development of operating manuals for work procedures in line with scientific standards (i.e. ISO);
  • Checks the work done by self, interns and experiential learners before it is submitted to senior scientist;

EXECUTIVE MANAGER: INTEGRATED GEOSCIENCE DEVELOPMENT
Position Status : Permanent
Reporting Line : Chief Executive Officer
Overall Job Purpose : Accountable for the prudent management of the Integrated Geoscience Development Portfolio, scientifically/commercially and provide strategic leadership to the portfolio as well as ensuring implementation of the Council for Geoscience (CGS) strategic business plan and annual performance plan.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Leadership and Management
  • Participate and provide inputs at Executive Level in the drafting and formulation of the CGS strategic plans and policies.
  • Develops and implement the divisional annual performance plan in line with the CGS strategy to ensure that the CGS focuses on objectives that enable delivery of its mandate, with particular reference to successful completion of key projects.
  • Provides strategic leadership for the entire Integrated Geoscience Development Portfolio, which includes Water and Environment, Minerals and Energy as well as Engineering Geology and Geohazards, consistent with the CGS’s mandate.
  • Advises the CEO on the strategic partnerships to be considered in strengthening delivery of the CGS’s mandate.
  • Ensure timely reporting of quality divisional output.
Operational Management
  • Ensures that the strategic objectives and operational/performance plans of the division are implemented in line with the CGS priorities with particular reference to:
– Monitoring, evaluating and reporting on key aspects of the divisional performance
– Complying with Geoscience Act, 1993 as amended and its Regulations
  • Oversees the operations of the Integrated Geoscience Development and manages its resources while ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure prudent management of organisational programmes (e.g. Geoscience Technical Programme), in terms of appropriate proposal, scoping, financials, human resources and overall reporting, at cross regional and/or multidisciplinary levels.
  • Develop and implement systems/tools for the execution, monitoring and completion of projects.
Financial Management
  • Ensure compliance with the Public Finance Management Act, 1999 (PFMA) and exercise proper financial control within the limits of the budget guidelines and long-term financial viability of the CGS.
  • Promotes and ensure adherence to budget guidelines and long-term financial viability of the CGS.
  • Promotes and ensure compliance with the CGS supply chain management policy and processes.
Stakeholder Relations
  • Develops and maintains a healthy network of stakeholders and participates in public engagement programmes of the CGS.
People Management
  • Develops and leads transformation programme of the CGS aligned with the objectives of the Employment Equity Act.
  • Implement professional and skills development for the entire divisional staff through structured processes, programmes and best practices in line with the CGS policies, strategies and geoscience professional development programmes.
  • Ensures succession planning strategies and programmes are in place for the staff.
  • Effectively leads and manages the Integrated Geoscience Development division by maintaining a motivated team to deliver on CGS strategy within the allocated budget.
  • Promotes culture and practices that reflect the CGS values and encourages good performance.
  • Determines human resources requirements taking into consideration operational needs, skills scarcity and retention capability.
  • Manages staff and administers the performance management system for all direct reports.
  • Participates in the recruitment and selection of individuals according to job requirements, EE targets and guidelines.
  • Oversee the staff development and training.
  • Empowers staff and encourages innovation/creativity.
Quality Assurance & Management
  • Ensure ISO accreditation of the various services within the Integrated Geoscience Development Portfolio.
  • Ensure implementation of the ISO standards and procedures across the Integrated Geoscience Development Portfolio.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Undertake specialised/cutting-edge geoscience investigations focussed on South
  • Africa’s minerals and energy development spheres.
  • Undertake specialised/cutting-edge geoscience research and development toward characterising and understanding South Africa’s geodynamic processes.
  • Undertake and lead the development and integration of fundamental geology, e.g., sedimentology, structure, metamorphic petrology, geochemistry, etc.
  • Lead geoscience data mining, collection, interpretation, and modelling toward developing the knowledge and strength of South Africa’s developmental imperatives.
  • Develop innovative and new methodologies that can be employed in South Africa’s development sectors.

  • Geology
  • Experience in integrated geosciences, geological mapping, geodynamic modelling, mineral resource estimation and knowledge on various mineral resource reporting standards.
  • Experience in 3D geological, tectonic, and mineral predictive modelling.
  • Peer-review geoscience publication record.

Overall Job Purpose: The incumbent will undertake a wide variety of advanced geoscience research focused on South Africa’s national development imperatives. The research and development will be especially focused on South Africa’s offshore geology and mineral and energy development sectors, largely through the collection and integration of various geoscience datasets, especially within South Africa’s marine space.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Undertake various advanced geoscience research activities, especially focused on fundamental offshore geoscience and minerals and energy development.
  • Undertake a leading role in the collection, processing and interpretation of various offshore geoscience datasets.
  • Compile integrated reports, maps, and databases on a wide variety of geoscience research themes, especially within the marine geoscience space.

CYBERSECURITY AND ICT RISK SPECIALIST

Overall Job Purpose: The cybersecurity and ICT risk specialist will be responsible for the implementation of the cyber protection mechanisms, testing, identity and access management, configuration management, cybersecurity (CS) education programme, CS Incident management, vulnerability and compliance with the relevant act, regulations and standards. Cybersecurity and ICT risk specialist will also act as an interface to various stakeholders for subjects related to cybersecurity.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform the cybersecurity testing and verifications of cyber governance, risk and compliance, cybersecurity/preventative management.
  • Responsible for multi-faceted cybersecurity risk program (e.g. monitor cybersecurity threats and report on cybersecurity activities and compliance across all CGS sites and keeping management informed about the trends and proposal for controls) to ensure that CGS technologies and information assets are protected in line with CGS policy universe and appropriate.
  • Proactively identify and make analysis of cybersecurity risks across the CGS sites and work with the CGS community including ICT, protection services and enterprise risk managers to oversee the implementation controls of appropriate controls measures to mitigate the cybersecurity risks.
  • Drive cybersecurity risks awareness program.
  • Perform other tasks necessary for continuous improvement of CGS cybersecurity posture as and when required.
  • Prepare the cybersecurity reports as and when required.
  • To build in- house cybersecurity centre of specialisation pipeline which entails training and mentoring the ICT interns.
  • Assist in keeping ICT asset register and configuration management database up to date.
