DIGITISATION PROJECT ASSISTANT X6
TOTAL COST TO COMPANY: R120 000.00 per annum
Fixed-Term CONTRACT (24 months)
The above short-term positions exist in the Heritage and Research Department at Robben Island Museum. The posts are based at the UWC RIM Mayibuye Archives. The purpose of the job is to assist in the implementation of the Unboxing Mayibuye: Access to Digital Heritage Project. This is a capacity development project funded by the French Development Agency.
The Digitisation Project Assistants will assist in the preservation, documentation and digitisation of heritage assets; and assist in developing innovative means that make digitised heritage resources accessible to the broader public.
An interest in conserving heritage resources, learning new technologies, collaboration and skills sharing is essential.
Responsibilities:
• To actively participate in all aspects of the Unboxing Mayibuye: Access to Digital Heritage Project programme; Please indicate where the Unboxing Mayibuye documents can be found. Just a summary concept document will suffice.
• Conduct research relating to specified collections and their liberation history context;
• Assist with the development of metadata and entering the data onto the Atom Database;
• Organising and processing of collections;
• Assist with preservation tasks under supervision of archivists;
• Participate in training sessions, workshops, seminars and events;
• Assist with development and curation of online and other exhibitions and content.
Qualification and Experience - minimum requirements:
• NQF 7 Degree or relevant tertiary qualification in Heritage or Museum Studies, Computer Science, History, Multimedia Studies, Art, or other relevant studies;
• Postgraduate qualifications will serve as an added advantage.
• Experience in at least one of the following areas:
• Research experience in the social sciences;
• Research and design in the technology field;
• Database experience;
• Information technology experience;
• Experience of working in an archive or a museum environment;
• Experience in Multimedia media design and development;

4X ROBBEN ISLAND EX-POLITICAL PRISONERS RESEARCH FIELD WORKERS
(GAUTENG AND FREE STATE RECORDINGS)

The above short-term positions exist in the Heritage and Research Department at Robben Island Museum. Field Workers will assist RIM on its ongoing interview recordings project of life history of all the Ex-Political Prisoners (EPPs) that were incarcerated at Robben Island. This project will only focus at Gauteng and Free State Provinces.
Responsibilities:
• Travel and at all times be with RIM Research Unit staff to conduct life history interviews during data collection sessions in Gauteng and Free State provinces
• Attend compulsory training sessions/workshops to be offered by RIM in Cape Town;
• Attend and contribute to project inception, progress and ad hoc meetings pertaining the Gauteng and Free Sate life history recording project;
• As a field worker, politely and meaningfully address all questions from the interviewees about the project and RIM’s mandate and current heritage programmes;
• Work with the RIM Research Unit to ensure that all EPPs in Gauteng and Free State Province are interviewed and RIM targets are met;
• Assist with identification of EPPs and their families that are eligible for interviews within the province;
• Link RIM Research Unit to the EPP and/or EPP family to be interviewed;
• Ensure a conducive and healthy atmosphere during interview session;
• As a field worker, outline the benefits of the interview project in relations to the EPPA and RIM as World Heritage Site to each EPP and/or EPP family to be interviewed;
• Educate all EPPs about RIM as World Heritage Site, its heritage programmes, and benefits that exists within RIM and other State Departments i.e. Department of Military Veterans;
• Market RIM through educating EPPs and their families on the mandate of RIM and its heritage programmes;
• Generate and submit monthly reports to the Supervisor in Cape Town.
• Able to conduct any other duties that are aimed at benefiting RIM and EPPs within the province i.e. attend meeting to talk about RIM heritage programmes, distribute resource materials to EPPs.
Minimum requirements:
• Be Robben Island Ex-Political Prisoner (with verifiable Prison Number);
• Fluent in isiZulu, se Sotho and English;
• Born and raised in the Gauteng or Free State
• Excellent knowledge of the Gauteng or Free State terrain
• Been unemployed for at least the last 5 year;
• Sober habits;
• Willingness to engage with former Prisoners or their family dependants who may be of a different political persuasion;
• Willingness to dress in the provided RIM branded attire;
• Willingness to travel to RIM for the inception meeting and 1 week of orientation training on the core values of RIM and the Memorialisation Project;
• Willingness to work long hours and weekends;
• Willingness to accept a 6 months employment contract from RIM with no option to extend.
