The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is a Section 3(a) public entity under the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) and is governed by a Board. The organisation is an authoritative voice for weather and climate related services in South Africa and is a member of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) to fulfil a range of international obligations of the government. METEOROLOGICAL TECHNICIAN X4
Salary: Negotiable

Job summary:
Observation:
• Perform routine weather observation duties that include: - o Visual weather observation and compile routine reports,
Internal and External Customer Relations:
• Liaise with clients as per office plan.
• Represent SAWS at Stakeholder meetings as per plan.
Total Quality Management
• Apply prevention and corrective action procedures on all findings related to weather observation.
• Promote a quality culture amongst the staff within the office.
• Promote the SAWS Quality Policy and intergrade it into the day-to-day activities of the office
• Provide assistance during audits of the regional office as required.
• Perform regular inspections to ensure all work done is according to documented requirements.
• Ensure that the work environment complies with legislative requirements relations to OHS.
Minimum Requirements and Attributes:
• A Grade 12 Certificate with Maths and Science.
• Weather Observers certificate.
• Ability to read, analyse and interpret written request for weather data and information.
• Knowledge of international standards such as WMO and ICAO. Advanced knowledge of observation tools.
• A valid code 08 driver’s license.

Job summary:

- Providing observation reports timeously as per schedule or as per the timeliness of the client’s requests
- Downloading of remote observation station data
- Collection and quality control of manual rainfall station
- Quality control of AWS and ARS data and transmission thereof to central data base

Job Summary
To develop and implement the SAWS’ Marketing and Channel Management Strategy to ensure the delivery of the SAWS’ mandate and objectives and ensuring not only the widest possible reach of weather information but to disseminate weather, aviation, air quality and climate solutions to various stakeholders. Participate in the SAWS’ revenue generation programs and provide the relevant market insights
Key performance areas
• To develop and implement the SAWS channel management strategy which includes the identification of end-to-end dissemination platforms that can be used to deliver weather aviation, air quality and climate information to all stakeholders (including public good and commercial clients), as well as the identification of revenue streams
• Develop a SAWS Dissemination Target Operating Model, representing both the current and desired future states of how weather and climate information will be disseminated.
• Continuously monitor the SAWS’ dissemination platforms, and together with the Communications team, ensure a wider reach for weather and climate-related information and the SAWS product and services offering.
• Monitor performance of channel activities using key metrics and prepare the requisite report as and when required.
• To develop the SAWS’ Marketing Strategy that seeks to position the organisation as a recognized and preferred meteorological and climate information provider in South Africa, sub-Saharan Africa and globally.
• Contribute to the overall SAWS strategic initiatives and planning and ensure that all channel and marketing objectives are understood by the SAWS’ internal and external stakeholders.
• Assist the research team and other internal stakeholders with the testing of products and services in the market and identify the relevant channels for these products
• Liaising with users and key customers to understand their specific requirements and communicate these to the relevant internal stakeholders and service providers to ensure fit-for-purpose weather, aviation, air quality and climate-related solutions.
• To work closely with the Communications teams to ensure that the dissemination channels reach the targeted markets.
• Manage the on-boarding of new customers
• Maintain a good team working relationship with all internal and external stakeholders
• Work with different SAWS’ departments to ensure that their policies and procedures support the Marketing and the Channel strategies.
• Develop and maintain an updated product/service catalogues and ensure that these are available for easy access by all stakeholders
• Working closely with the ICT and Communications team to ensure that the SAWS’ dissemination channels are always up to date and functioning optimally
• Effectively lead and manage the department by maintaining a motivated team to deliver on the SAWS mandate within the allocated resources
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing or any other related qualification
• A relevant post-Graduate qualification
• At least 10 years relevant experience
• Experience in working with relevant digital technology
• Experience in Customer Relations Management
• Proven track record in building and leading highly successful and motivated teams
• Stakeholder relations management
• At least 3(three) years people management experience

SCIENTIST: CLIMATE CHANGE AND VARIABILITY RESEARCH

Job Summary:
The position of Scientist: Climate Change and Variability is tasked with assisting to drive innovation through Research and Development in climate change science. The position will conduct research related to climate change and variability, develop products and among others such that are listed in the key performance areas.
Key performance areas:
• Assist with the development of climate products and services in support of the SAWS services.
• Participate in evaluating research needs and assist in developing and maintaining climate change research in the SAWS, in line with the international standards, practices and developments.
• Assist in conducting and managing the research projects administration related to climate change and variability, its socio-economic impacts and application development.
• Assist and participate in developing funding research proposals and manage the administration of research efforts forthcoming.
• The incumbent will also be responsible for the analyses of large data sets from the latest global and regional models
• The incumbent will assist in interpreting IPCC reports to extract information relevant for strengthening SAWS’s internal and national scientific position on climate change and its impacts.
• Participate in research programmes, projects or activities related to climate change research.
• Develop and nurture external collaboration with national and international institutions relevant to atmospheric research activities.
• Ensure the scientific integrity to international standards of the research activities in his/her field in the SAWS
• The suitable candidate should have a good understanding of climate change science and its applications and possess communication skills necessary to contribute to the advancement of the SAWS climate change programme.
• Participate in all activities related to the implementation and/or maintenance of the SAWS TQM system.
Minimum Requirements:
• An appropriate honours degree in Atmospheric Sciences or Meteorology with knowledge and experience in Atmospheric Science and/or Climate Change and Variability Research applications
• Knowledge of LINUX shell scripting is required and programming in any language such as FORTRAN, Python, R, etc.
• Proven experience (1 to 3 years) on a scientist level, successful project participation
• A publication record relevant to this field will be an added advantage
