•    Developing, documenting and maintaining, frameworks and tools for postgraduate funding interventions.


Monitoring and Reporting

•    Ensure compliance to the Higher Degrees Improvement Plan.

•    Prepare progress reports for submission to the Higher Degrees Committee.

•    Analyse progress report for students’ funding cases referred by faculties.

•    Analyse application vs funding needs vs academic progress statistics for master’s and doctoral students.

•    Identifying risks/gaps in the postgraduate funding processes and acting accordingly.

 

Relationship Management and Research 

•    Manage professional relationships with higher degrees internal and external stakeholders.

•    Providing training and guidance to colleagues across the institution on post-award management of postgraduate student funds.

Income generation

Job description

We play a critical role in contributing towards the sustainable community livelihoods through knowledge and products generated by unlocking the potential of IK and promoting the recognition, development, protection and affirmation of the role of IK in the global knowledge economy (https://natural-sciences.nwu.ac.za/indigenous-knowledge-systems-centre/home).

We focus on multi-disciplinary research and actively collaborate with different institutions. We currently have DSTI-NRF SARChI supported project on Optimisation and development of IK-based products (agriculture & health) and their applications for bioeconomy and looking for 2 post-doctoral research fellows to join us.

This is a full-time Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship (PDRF, 2 Positions available) fully funded. The PDRF should commence IMMEDIATELY. This is a one-year position, but the contract can be extended for up to two years, subject to satisfactory performance during the previous year. The PDRF will work at Potchefstroom and Mahikeng of the North-West University at different phases of the project.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

·       Play an active role as an investigator in all aspects of the research project.

·       Lead author of at least 2 papers/annum published in international accredited peer-review journals.

·       Assist in capacity development at the NWU- through active interaction, co-supervision and collaboration with post-graduate students and interns.

 

Minimum requirements

  • A PhD (obtained in the last five years) in a discipline related to Indigenous Knowledge Systems (medicinal plant research) and related fields in Ethnobotany, Ethnopharmacology, Biological Sciences
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with a minimum of three (3) ISI rated publications in a relevant discipline as well as presentations at national and/or international conferences.
  • Physical ability to conduct laboratory and fieldwork.
  • Analytical and LC MS skills.
  • In vitro and in vivo research experience.
  • Extensive knowledge on product development & nutraceutical research.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

To manage and support research laboratory operations, analytical activities, OHS processes, student support activities, and externally funded projects within the School of Chemical and Minerals Engineering.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Laboratory management

  • Manage and support daily laboratory and analytical operations.
  • Coordinate project-related laboratory activities and operational support.
  • Coordinate maintenance, troubleshooting, and utilisation of specialised analytical equipment.
  • Manage laboratory consumables, chemical inventories, and related administration.
  • Support operational continuity within research and externally funded project activities.

OHS

  • Support and maintain laboratory OHS processes and compliance requirements.
  • Assist with hazardous chemical management, MSDS control, and laboratory risk assessments.
  • Promote safe laboratory practices within research, student, and project-related activities.

Chemicals and consumables

  • Coordinate laboratory consumables, chemical inventories, and stock control activities.
  • Support procurement and availability of chemicals and laboratory consumables for research and project activities.
  • Ensure appropriate handling, storage, and documentation of laboratory chemicals and related materials.

Training

  • Support and guide students and researchers in the use of laboratory equipment and experimental procedures.
  • Assist with training on laboratory methods, analytical techniques, and safe laboratory practices.
  • Provide technical support related to project and research activities. 

Research assistance

  • Support externally funded research and industrial projects through laboratory and analytical activities.
  • Assist with method development, experimental troubleshooting, and interpretation of analytical results.
  • Support undergraduate and postgraduate research-related laboratory activities.

Minimum requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field (NQF level 7/8).
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ laboratory management experience.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ analytical experience.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERENCES:

  • A master’s degree in Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field (NQF level 9).
  • Experience in research laboratory environments supporting postgraduate students and externally funded projects.
  • Experience with analytical and experimental work related to carbon materials, minerals, biomass, or related fields.
  • Experience with advanced analytical instrumentation such as GC-MS, HPLC, ICP, ultimate analysis, TGA, or related systems.

Food Preparation

·        Monitor the production of food using approved menus and recipes in the kitchen

Food Quality and stock control

·        Responsible for stock control and storage management.

·        Ensuring proper food temperature monitoring and maintenance.

·        Implement and monitor effective portion control.

·        Conduct monthly stock takes for the dining halls

 

Dining Hall Administration 

·        Timeous procurement of kitchen ingredients

Staff management

·        Effective supervision of staff in the dining halls

·        Impartial rostering of staff in the dining halls

·        Handling staff conflict, discipline matters and staff motivation in the dining halls

Occupational Health and Safety

·        Monitor adherence to all occupational health and safety regulations and procedures in the dining halls.

Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Management of Laboratory and Fieldwork for Climatology Research Group activities.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.     Field worker:

  • Manage and Facilitate the Deployment of Staff and students to field projects both in SA and abroad.
  • Overseeing and controlling technical performance of field measurements, including instruments, ancillary equipment and field infra-structure.
  • Organisation and execution of standard operating procedures, scheduled maintenance as well as all technical (instrumentation and operational) upgrades.
  • Day to day management of aspects regarding running of the station, student’s stations field work and data quality, station data security and data transfers to archives/partner access.
  • Data collation (quality control & quality assurance), transfer, archiving.
  • Electrical and electronic installations.

 

2.     Manage Laboratory:

  • Manage and maintain the fixed and mobile laboratory by keeping up to date gasses & monitoring equipment.

 

3.     Administration:

  • Procurement of all project related research equipment and consumables.

 

4.     Maintenance of atmospheric monitoring equipment:

  • Equipment must be calibrated at all times and ready for deployment.

 

5.     Safety:

  • Manage of laboratory and fieldwork safety.
  • View, Initiate, develop, promote, maintain and review measures to ensure the health and safety of employees and students at work.
  • Report on health and safety matters relevant to the allocated area of operation.
  • Assist with discussing health and safety matters and make written recommendations to the employer.

 

6.     Training:

  • Provision of initial, on-going and site-specific training to the students and staff with technical and scientific aspects of atmospheric field measurements. 
  • Development of own and professional management skills regarding technical and academic interaction and interdependency.

 

7.     Client Services:

  • Liaise with national and international clients and stakeholders on project requirements where needed.

 

8.     Ad-hoc:

  • Instructions will be given by line management.

 

Minimum requirements

  • Must be a certified Electrician.
  • An N-Level certification in fitting and turning and metal work welding.
  • A First aid Level 1 certificate.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in project management / planning & maintenance management.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in managing, maintaining, operating an- air quality monitoring station.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience or training in electronics and data retrieval.
