MUSEUM SCIENTIST AND COLLECTIONS MANAGER: FLORISBAD QUATERNARY RESEARCH STATION 
(PERMANENT POSITION) 
Level: From DPSA Level 7 
 
Purpose of the Position 
The main purpose of the post is to conduct research and to manage Florisbad Collection. The Collections Manager assists the HOD (Curator) in the planning of how to best collect and maintain our collections at Florisbad. Together they also assist other research institutions with information, and those who apply our information for further research, assessment, monitoring and environmental management efforts. This expertise is also to be made available in accredited scientific publications, during lectures, conference contributions, in the popular science / science education fields, through popular scientific publications and talks. This information should also find its way towards the permanent and temporary exhibitions in the National Museum, as well as outside temporary exhibitions where the Museum if officially involved. 
 
Key Performance Areas 
• Conducting archaeological research, which is published in peer-reviewed journals, books and reports. 
• Management of Florisbad Collections. 
• Provision of professional services to students, other researchers and conservation institutions / bodies. 
• Provision of expert support for Museum exhibitions and educational activities in order to inform and popularise archaeology as a field of expertise. Publishing popular articles in journals and other media. 
 
Knowledge, Skills and Attributes 
Qualification: Must be an archaeologist with Minimum Masters (NQF Level 9) in broader archaeology field 
A valid motor vehicle driver’s licence 
A South African citizen 
Experience: Minimum 3 years post qualification experience in conducting research, collecting, preparing and working with archaeology specimens. 
A publication record of original research in accredited journals and/ or research reports or significant environmental assessments 
Knowledge: Knowledge of archaeology of Southern Africa, and fairly detailed awareness of archaeology specimen preparation and sampling and identification techniques. 
Preference will be given to those who have knowledge on Pleistocene/ Stone Age archaeology

​SENIOR OR PRINCIPAL MUSEUM SCIENTIST: ARCHAEOLOGY 

(PERMANENT POSITION) 
Level: From DPSA Level 8 
 
Purpose of the Position 
To undertake internationally competitive research primarily in the Pleistocene/ stone age archaeology field and to publish the research through peer reviewed publications; conferences, lectures and popular publications. 
 
Knowledge, Skills and Attributes 
Qualifications: PhD degree in Archaeology and must be a South African citizen, holding a motor vehicle driver’s license. 
Experience: Three or more years’ post qualification experience in conducting research, collecting, preparing and working with archaeology specimens. At least seven publications in accredited scientific journals. Must have extensive experience leading field trips. Experience with applications for research grant funding. 
Knowledge: A thorough understanding of Pleistocene/ stone age archaeology. Knowledge of archaeology of Southern Africa, and fairly detailed awareness of archaeology specimen preparation and sampling and identification techniques. A high level of computer literacy.

Personal Attitudes: The person should be organised, administratively adept, have an eye for detail, and have the ability to work under pressure. Good interpersonal relation, writing and verbal communication skills is important.
