- Monitoring creation and maintenance of the national bibliography

- Act as project leader for ISAP in making the content of periodical articles accessible in support of bibliographic access.
- Manage the project and quality index record delivery to ensure the ISAP annual target is met in accordance with the NLSA strategic objective.
- Plan, develop, coordinate and supervise the project and staff efficiently and ensure user needs are met effectively.
- Promote the upskilling of provincial and community library staff by providing RDA cataloging training.
- Develop an operational plan which incorporates goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of Metadata and Cataloguing Services in collaboration with the Deputy Director and Director.
- Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Metadata and Cataloguing Services units.
- Participate in the drafting of policies for approval and prepares procedures and standard operational manuals to implement the policies.
- Review existing policies on a three-yearly basis and recommend changes as required.
- Provide support to the Deputy Director by preparing programme-specific monthly and quarterly reports.
- Proactively develop the collections of the NLSA.
- Keep abreast of library trends, issues, technology, and developments in the professional field with emphasis on 4IR, Linked Data, BIBFRAME for cataloguing.
- Keep abreast with indexing and database development for ISAP.
- Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Metadata and Cataloguing Services units.
- Ensure that the units and services/products offered by the units contribute to the NLSA’s mission and reflect the priorities of the NLSA.
- Monitor the day-to-day delivery of services of the units to maintain and/or improve quality of service.
- Oversee the planning, implementation, execution, and evaluation of special projects.

- Participate in the drafting of policies for approval by the NLSA and prepare procedures to implement the sub-programme policies.

- Prepares materials for shelving and use by marking materials with ownership symbols, call numbers, barcodes and security strips.
- Assists in sorting materials and assigning treatment priorities for in-house treatment and commercial rebinding.
- Restore or repair bindings in accordance with historical styles and conservation requirements.
- Construction of new spines, rebacking, resewing of the textblock and complete rebinding.
- Performs various paper repair techniques to correct tears, lacunae, stains etc.
- Creates protective enclosures including phase boxes, rare book boxes, portfolios, envelopes and polyester encapsulations for materials which cannot be otherwise treated.
- Determine the extent of the damage and create the enclosure which best promotes both use and protection of the material.
- DE acidifies paper by aqueous and non-aqueous methods to slow or halt acidic deterioration.
- Tests paper, textiles, leather, adhesives and other library materials and structures by chemical and mechanical means to determine their durability and longevity
- In collaboration with the Conservator, performs treatment and repair to Special Collection items.
- Completes or repairs binding as appropriate, in accordance with conservation requirements and instructions.
- Prepares protective enclosures including phase boxes, envelopes and polyester encapsulations for materials that cannot be otherwise treated

STACK MANAGEMENT LIBRARIAN

The objectives of the National Library of South Africa (NLSA) are to contribute to socio-economic, cultural, educational, scientific and innovative development by collecting, recording, preserving and making available the national documentary heritage and promoting an awareness and appreciation thereof, by fostering information literacy, and by facilitating access to the world’s information resources.
The NLSA invites applications from suitably qualified persons for appointment on a permanent basis. The successful candidate will be based at the Pretoria Campus and report to the Manager: Preservation Services.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A Degree in Library and Information Science (B. Bibl / B.LIS)
- At least 3 years of experience in the Library and Information Sector
- Knowledge of the Copyright Act, National Library Act, Legal Deposit Act.
- Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme, the Library of Congress Classification Scheme and general working knowledge of other classification systems used in libraries.
- Ability to sort and file materials efficiently and systematically.
- Ability to initiate and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, managers and other libraries.
- Change management (being able to work effectively in the face of ambiguity; open mindedness to change and adaptation of work habits/behaviour to different conditions)
- Integrated library systems (ILS) – knowledge of basic structure, content and use of an integrated library system
- Collaboration (working with diverse groups, in and out of the library, in pursuit of shared goals and with an appreciation of diverse perspectives; taking the library’s story into the community)
- Digital curation (understanding best practices for the selection, collection, preservation, description, organisation, and archiving principles for digital documentation)
- Initiative (the capacity to identify issues and to develop and implement solutions to address those issues)
- Management and preservation of collections (basic understanding of the management and preservation methods for general collections and for rare books)
- Marketing (promoting the expertise, services, collections, and facilities of the library to a varied clientele e.g., undergraduate students, graduates, and faculty in all disciplines
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Stack management
- Supervise and manage the work and operations of the stack and binding assistants.
- Facilitate collection of periodicals, books, and other library material from BSCM for shelving and processing.
- Assist Information Access with retrieval of materials.
- Compile registers for both campuses (Pta and Cape Town), reporting on the daily activities.
- Monitor the sorting, filing, and shelving of books and periodicals.
- Identify materials that need repair or conservation treatment.
- Coordinate transport of materials for relocation or exhibitions.
- Compile monthly report.
- Oversee shelf reads collections on a regular basis to ensure that each book is in its specific location to facilitate the retrieval of information.
- Conduct inventory/stocktaking of collections
- Record periodicals/ books on the register.
- Assess the periodicals to establish the required type of binding.
- Quality assure and sign off the work done.
- Oversee shelving of bound material.
- Sign off the bound periodicals.
- File the registers and request forms.
- Identify building problems which can be a threat to the collection.
- Maintain signage in the stack rooms.
- Liaise with Facilities to maintain cleanliness and order of the book stacks.
- Liaise with Security to maintain secure access to stack rooms.
- Monitor the temperature and humidity readings.
- Report problems to Facilities
- Monitor repairs.
- Coordinate emergency readiness and disaster management (ERDM) activities.
- Disaster Management with regards to the stack rooms.
- Assist in planning and delivery of Disaster Management workshops
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending relevant training sessions and workshops to improve service delivery.
- Provide input on policies and standard operating procedures as needed.
- Identify Collections that require conservation services.
- Identify human resources that will participate in the project.
- Ensure that the project is in line with the strategy for the institution.
- Lead the space allocation for Special Collections of the institution.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

LIBRARIAN – READER, REFERENCE, AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS SERVICES

We are inviting applications from suitably qualified persons to apply for the position of Librarian in Information Access Services. The successful candidate will report to the Manager: Information Access Services. Librarian- Reader, Reference, and Special Collections services is accountable for providing reference services to the public and for promoting access to information on-site, nationally, and internationally.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
Attend Research Queries
- Conduct reference interviews
- Search for items requested.
- Search OPAC or other sources of information to determine the availability and the specific location of the material
- Work on the books that are already on the shelf and go through each item to read the shelf number to ensure that the books are in the correct sequence.
- Identify collection gaps and damaged collections
- Shelf read the collection on open shelves to make sure all books are in the correct sequence according to their DDC number
- Search and retrieve books with problems as identified from the report, e.g., those that were not correctly captured on the system
- Identify and recommend titles to purchase based on user needs.
- Receive government gazettes and provincial gazettes from Periodicals.
- Organize the gazettes according to national and provincial areas.
- Identify missing issues and report to the Manager.
- Assist the Senior Librarian with identifying what collections/items will be included in the exhibition.
- Conduct research through the library’s collections to locate appropriate items to be included in the exhibition.
- Assists the Senior Librarian with mounting the exhibition.
- Assist with organizing exhibition workshops and organised tours.
- Assist with the identification of the target population and assist with drafting questions and preparation for the pilot phase to test the efficiency of the data collection tool.
- Prepare a survey report for approval.
- Assisting patrons in accessing the internet
- Monitor usage and submit usage reports to management.
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- A four-year Degree in Library and Information Science (NQF level 7).
- One year of experience in a similar environment will be an added advantage
- Knowledge of automated library systems, relevant databases and other information resources
