ECONOMIST: AGRO-FOOD CHAINS
Type of Position: Permanent
Reporting to Manager: Agro-Food Chains
Based: Pretoria

Qualification and Experience:
BSc or BCom degree in Agricultural Economics, Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics will be an added advantage. At least 3 years’ experience in the agricultural sector environment. Good understanding of and/or experience working in public entities or other relevant organisations. Experience in conducting research.
Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of the Marketing of Agricultural Products Act, 1996 (Act No. 47 of 1996). Knowledge and practical application of Project Management. Knowledge and understanding of Policies, Procedures and Legislation within the agricultural sector. Financial Principles. Knowledge and practical application of Economic Statistical Softwares such as STATA and E-Views amongst others. Full knowledge and use of MS Word Office (Excel, MS Word and PowerPoint. Knowledge and practical application of Project Management

Key duties responsibility
• Acquire and apply relevant tools, techniques, and methodologies in undertaking of independent research projects/programmes and policy analysis relating to agro-food chains focus area;
• Manage certain aspects or parts of research projects/programmes in the area of trade as assigned by supervisors from time to time;
• Supervise interns in the undertaking of research activities on agro-food chains focus area;
• Provide expertise and/or participate in cross-focus area and cross-divisional research activities;
• Conduct research and submit research papers to conferences and peer-reviewed journals in consultation with supervisors on a regular basis;
• Lead and/or participate in the production of reports in agro-food chains unit
• Identify potential research problems/opportunities and initiate research activities pertaining to agro-food chains focus area;
• Ability to extract data from applicable databases or data sources, formulate an analysis to answer economic questions;
• Participate in commodity value chain round table discussions on agro-food chains focus area in the agricultural sector.
• Contribute to policy dialogue on agro-food chains focus area through various platforms such as information days, seminars and webinars
• Liaise with NAMC stakeholders, Directly Affected Groups (DAGs) and industry bodies on matters pertaining to market access focus area.
