SUPERVISORY LEGAL PRACTITIONER – CIVIL

The position is based in Tzaneen.
 
KEY OUTPUTS
  • Train, supervise and guide Candidate Attorneys.
  • Co-ordinate legal training at the office.
  • Provide individual mentoring and coaching for Legal Practitioners and Candidate Attorneys.
  • Assess the quality of the files and work performed by Candidate Attorneys and Legal Practitioners daily.
  • Assist the Head of Office with quality assessments.
  • Monitor case flow management of Legal Practitioners, Candidate Attorneys and Judicare practitioners at court.
  • Assess the quality of Judicare work.
  • Monitor and assess the quality of work performed by Co-operation Partners.
  • Legal representation in civil matters.
  • Ensure that the law library at the office is up-to-date and adequate.
 
COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ATTRIBUTES) REQUIRED
  • B Proc or LLB.
  • Admitted attorney.
  • At least seven years’ post-admission legal experience.
  • Experience as a Senior Legal Practitioner or equivalent is preferable.
  • Legal Quality Assurance score of not less than 90%.
  • Must be able to mentor and supervise.
  • Legal representation and litigation skills.
  • Human rights orientation.
  • A commitment to professionalism and service excellence.
  • A valid code 08 driver’s licence compulsory.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Strong research capabilities.
  • Good administrative skills.

Salary Package: SU – 1 R859,749.00 all-inclusive package per annum

HIGH COURT LEGAL PRACTITIONER

KEY OUTPUTS
  • Provide legal representation to indigent accused persons at High Court level.
  • Handling of complex criminal High Court matters.
  • Training and supervision of Candidate Attorneys.
  • Perform office administration.
  • Represent women, children and landless people in criminal matters.
 
COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ATTRIBUTES) REQUIRED              
  • Admitted attorney or advocate (the latter must have completed pupillage successfully at an institution recognised by Legal Aid SA).
  • Legal representation at High Court level.
  • Minimum of at least seven (7) years’ post-qualification experience of which five (5) years must be post-admission experience.
  • A minimum of four (4) years’ High Court experience, or a minimum of six (6) years’ Regional Court experience.
  • LLB degree.
  • Proven track record in criminal matters at High Court level.
  • Right of appearance in High Court.
  • Valid driver’s licence will be an advantage.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.

KEY OUTPUTS
  • To create a clean physical environment and render office services as and when required.
  • Serve Legal Practitioners and other Local Office staff by providing excellent office support services such as messenger duties.
  • Ensure that reports and documentation are sent/delivered to the right people, timeously.
  • Maintain an incoming/outgoing fax register per the required format.
  • Incoming mail handled in accordance with Legal Aid SA administrative procedures.
  • All documentation to be correctly/accurately filed.
  • Switchboard to be manned at all times and proper telephone etiquette to be adhered to at all times.
  • Daily collection and posting of mail.
  • Transporting Legal Aid SA staff members to courts/Provincial or National Office as per Legal Aid SA relevant Transport/Fleet Management policy/procedures.

  • National Senior/Matric certificate.

  • Support the office’s legal staff by providing paralegal services to people qualifying for legal aid.
  • Identify and solve matters that are not of a litigious nature.
  • Identify cases of a litigious nature and hand over to legal practitioners.
  • Handle legal administration.
  • Keep the client database up to date.
  • Conduct interviews with people applying for legal assistance.
  • Assist clients with the completion of forms.
 
COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ATTRIBUTES) REQUIRED                                                                                    
  • National Senior/Matric certificate and a 1-year paralegal qualification.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Experience in land rights matters.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to relate at all levels.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • A valid unendorsed code 8 driver’s licence is an advantage.
 
 
Basic Salary: Level 6 (R211,713.00) plus benefits per annum
