Job Title : Junior Scientist – Engineering Geologist X2
Salary: R535 482,28 Cost to Company
P-Grade: P09
Location: Head Office (Pretoria)
Reporting Line: Manager: Engineering and Geohazards
Overall Job Purpose: The incumbent will undertake limited research in a wide variety of geoscientific fields including project implementation under guidance of more senior scientific staff within the Engineering and Geohazards Business Unit
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research and Development
- Conducts limited geoscience research under guidance which include data collection, basic analyses and interpretation.
- Resolves simple problems in a variety of geoscientific fields in line (in part) with SOP/research methodology under guidance or supervision.
- Participates in statutory and/or commercial projects under supervision.
- Geoscience data collection and capturing, map compilation and geoscience data collation under the instruction and guidance.
- Compilation of scientific reports under guidance.
- Gives formal scientific or technical presentations of papers or reports, internally to other staff members and externally with guidance at conferences or symposia (typically once a year).
- Publishes research findings internally and or externally based on the nature of the project cycle.
Quality Assurance
- Work within the requirements of the prescribed standards (i.e. ISO)
- Undertake specific and requisite self-improvement learning/conferences and development through workshops/training courses.
- Attaching all schedules/documents to data confirmation to be distributed accordingly
- Filing and sorting all data confirmation by user code, action date within agreed timeframes
- Maintain an effective filing system for ease of tracking and retrieval of documents
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
- BSc (Hons) in Engineering Geology
- MSc (with BSc Hons in Engineering Geology), or
- PhD (with BSc Hons in Engineering Geology)
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- Entry-level working experience in the interpretation and application of engineering geology
- Practical exposure and experience in working in the engineering geological environment such as conducting of geotechnical site investigations, interpreting geotechnical data and information and providing assistance in geohazard report reviews
- Basic exposure in the interpretation and application of geoscience data in relation to engineering geology, geotechnical investigations and geohazards
- Understanding of measurements, recording, processing, and representation of data in graphical or map format
- Basic proficiency in the application of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and geotechnical software
- Understanding and knowledge of National Standards, industry guidelines and requirements for geotechnical site investigations and geohazard evaluations
- Basic proficiency in research on big data and data analytics in the geo-scientific environment
- Basic proficiency in conducting geo-scientific research within the engineering geology and geohazards field of study
- Basic proficiency in compiling, editing and reviewing of geo-scientific reports and maps
- Basic proficiency in conducting interpretation, evaluation and assessment of research data
- Must be able to implement ISO certification processes and standards
- Must be able to conduct basic geological/geotechnical site zonation modelling and data geo-scientific data management
- Computer literacy and proficiency in data management, MS Office Suite, geotechnical data processing and basic modelling software, ArcGIS
