ASSOCIATE VETERINARIAN (x1 Permanent) 
 
 
Inherent Job Requirements: Degree in Veterinary Science (BVSc or equivalent) 
 
Experience: Minimum of 3 years’ Clinical experience of which 2 years in Exotic or Wildlife medicine •Post graduate degree in Wildlife or Zoological medicine is beneficial 
 
Specific Skills and Knowledge: • Strong oral and written communication skills • Ability to work with and be comfortable around potentially dangerous and unpredictable animal species • Strong interest in Research and Conservation medicine 
Membership / Affiliations: Registered with the South African Veterinary Council 
 
Job outputs: Manage clinical care including diagnosis and treatment of clinical cases, clinical pathology and post mortem examinations; Determine and monitor collection’s health and husbandry problems; Produce and implement appropriate and cost effective preventative health care programs • Keep full and accurate records of both clinical and pathological cases •Manage, supervise and train hospital staff and students 
• Communicate findings to the rest of the animal health care team, the relevant Curators, Keepers and General manager of fauna • Assist with quarantine management and state regulated Veterinary Services • Manage veterinary aspects of quarantine import and export consignments • Perform administrative duties including data entry and the writing up of treatment protocols, safe –working procedures, etc. • Maintenance of the veterinary vehicle and capture equipment • Assist in the formulation of diets in conjunction with the Senior Veterinarian and the Curator of Stores • Develop, assist and participate in Conservation Research projects • Assist with pest control in the hospital and quarantine block with the help of the pest control officer • Assist with formulation and implementation of species management plans • Assist with the formulation of the Johannesburg Zoological Gardens animal collection plan • Take care of equipment provided to you by the Zoo • Accurate, timely reporting of all significant occurrences in the section to the Senior Veterinarian • Compile routine and ad hoc information reports as requested by your superiors.
