Key responsibilities:
- Working with the qualitative manager to ensure that data collection activities are conducted smoothly, ethically, and completed to deadlines
- Recruiting adult research participants and key stakeholder informants (for example community health workers or clinic staff)
- Scheduling and undertaking key informant and stakeholder in-depth interviews
- Collecting interview notes and facilitating audio recording of the interview.
- Recruiting participants and conducting focus group discussions with adults, adolescents and children
- Participating actively in team review meetings and feedback discussions
- Completing some transcription and translation of interviews from Zulu into English
- Ensuring qualitative data is correctly stored and uploaded using data technology provided
- Assisting with data collection activities, following up on research participants and contact visits

- Perform daily quality control checks of CRFs, surveys and other data collection tools;
- Ensure forms are filled correctly and there are no blanks or missing information;
- If data is missing on the forms, immediately notify the individual who filled the form and have them correct or fill in the missing data on the same day;
- Ensure that daily entry of data from participant files/forms into the REDCap database is accurately done;
- Assist with data cleaning and analysis as requested;
- Ensure proper version control is maintained for all CRFs and data collection tools;
- Review and verify all source data to ensure the completeness, accuracy and consistency;
- Assist with development and implementation of a monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system to ensure accurate and efficient entry of data into the REDCap database, including spot-check and "double entry" of data entered by the Data Collectors;
- Ensure accuracy of data entered in data abstraction forms, locator forms, enrolment log, blood specimen register etc;
- Ensure completeness of files after participant completes study enrolment or drops out during enrolment;
- Recommend and monitor corrective and preventive actions;
- Ensure files are not placed in locations where they can be damaged by rain/floods, theft etc;
- Ensure that all files are returned to locked file cabinets at the end of each day;
- Ensure all surveys, forms and lab results are placed in correct tabs and secured in the file folders;
- Ensure patients files are never removed from the clinic for any reason;
- Assist with data cleaning and analysis as requested.

Minimum Requirements
- Honours Degree or equivalent (NQF 8) degree in Political Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences or similar field of human and social sciences, and should be registered for, or about to register for, a Masters with a registered South African University;
- Conversant with the Governance and Artificial Intelligence research in Africa;
- Minimum of 2 years of postgraduate experience in the relevant research role or sector;
- Relevant experience in humanities and social sciences including relevant concepts on Africa’s Development Agenda regarding social, economic and various human security areas i.e. food and health;
- Suitable candidate should demonstrate understanding of the state and international diplomatic protocols;
- A good understanding of the research development and national system of innovation (NSI) and familiarity with the Agenda 2063 aspirations;
- Understanding of the landscape of and stakeholders in the Diplomatic Core will be an added advantage;
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills, and the ability to co-ordinate and capacitate staff;
- Demonstrable high proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other statistical tools;
- Must have intellectual and personal integrity, with a well-developed work ethic and drive, and an aptitude for innovation;
- Should be able to work under pressure, and after hours when required to meet deadlines;

The Research Trainee Programme in the HSRC provides the successful candidates with an opportunity to further develop their research expertise by working with subject experts and project specialists. The research trainee experience is intensive and requires mature individuals who are able to work independently as well as in a team. The successful individual will be required to balance day to day duties and responsibilities in AISA and the HSRC with Masters related work and complete their Masters qualification within 2 years. Time is set aside for this purpose – 60/40 split.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct research in the area of political and international relations, with special focus on African Affairs;
- Contribute to the strategic objectives of Africa focus mandate through publications and strategic engagements in and on Africa;
- Prepare manuscripts for publication emanating from the research they are currently pursuing or that is led by the HSRC in the relevant fields;
- Undertake qualitative and quantitative fieldwork;
