The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) was established in terms of the ECPTA Act (Act no. 2 of 2010) and is a Schedule 3c Provincial Public Entity, with a vision to be: “A province where Biodiversity Conservation and Tourism Management underpin sustainable development,” aligned with the mission: “to be the premier entity for managing biodiversity and tourism”.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR – BIODIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION
Centre: Head Office (East London)
Salary: Level E1 (Salary negotiable commensurate with experience) (Five-year contract position – cost to company package)

 
 
Purpose
Reporting to the CEO, the Executive Director: Biodiversity and Conservation shall be responsible to provide strategic leadership towards achievement of biodiversity and conservation for the benefit of current and future generations. To guide the Agency in relation to scientific services, conservation management, protected area expansion and stewardship, project management of infrastructure and social responsibility projects. Oversee the protected areas (Nature Reserves) of the ECPTA in accordance with the ECPTA Act No. 2 of 2010 and related applicable National Legislation.
 
Requirements
• A Masters’ Degree or a qualification in Conservation Science or Environmental Sciences. A PhD (Doctoral) Degree will be an added advantage.
• A minimum of 10 (ten) years relevant experience.
• 5 (five) years relevant experience at senior/executive management level in biodiversity conservation, or commercial operations.

Key Performance Areas
• Conservation research, Knowledge Management, Strategic Development and
Management – Lead the strategic direction of biodiversity conservation within the ECPTA in support of the Agency’s strategic outcomes and relevant national and provincial legislation.
• Biodiversity Conservation Planning and Stewardship – Provide direction to provincial and national protected area expansion strategy processes.
• Effective Management of Protected Areas – Provide strategic direction and direct the management of ECPTA’s reserves. Guide the implementation of reserve-specific management plans aligned to the METT-SA system.
• Reserve infrastructure management and development – Ensure maximisation of current assets efficiency before investing in capital expenditures.
• Financial Management – Critical review of the monthly reporting and analyse and investigate and / or action all areas of discrepancy. Responsible for Operations budget preparation and ownership of adherence to budget.
• People Management – Responsible for strategic planning of human resource capabilities technical and leadership structures to ensure alignment with the business strategy. Ensure an effective and efficient organisation structure for the Operation’s Department is in place to achieve the organisation objectives.
