Job Description
Durban University of Technology (DUT) is located on the warm east coast of South Africa. It sprawls over seven (7) campuses in tropical and picturesque Durban, and in Pietermaritzburg, with its undulating hills that flow over from the Drakensberg Mountain.

Associate Professor (Information Systems)

Minimum Requirements
Associate Professor:
  • A relevant Doctorate Degree and an undergraduate degree in Information Systems/Information Technology/Electronic Engineering/Computer Engineering/Computer Science
  • A minimum of seven DHET accredited publications/creative output over the preceding three years;
  • Successful postgraduate supervision of at least two Master’s and one Doctorate
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in higher education
 
Recommendations:  
  • Teaching experience at a University of Technology
  • Teaching experience in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) discipline
  • Expertise in ICT
  • Experience in curriculum development
  • Experience in innovative teaching and learning technologies, including e-learning.
 
Summary of duties:
The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Teach and examine at undergraduate and post-graduate levels and supervise Master’s students in ICT related Programmes as assigned by the HOD and/or Programme Coordinator.
  • Carry out duties related to level coordination, curriculum development, teaching, research and community engagement.
  • Attend and contribute to Programme, Department, Faculty and University staff meeting, programme planning and promotion of the discipline.
  • Assume Headship responsibilities should circumstance demand for an appointee at the level of Professor, Associate Professor or Senior Lecturer; and
  • Contribute to the Programme’s research endeavours.

Job Description
DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY AND FOOD SCIENCE
 
 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
 Full Professor
  • Doctorate in Biotechnology/Microbiology or Biochemistry.
  • A distinguished scholar with an NRF C-rating is preferable.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of teaching experience at a university level.
  • Publications in DHET-accredited journals [minimum of ten DHET-accredited publications over the preceding three years].
  • Evidence of successful supervision of postgraduate students [minimum of seven Master’s students and three Doctoral candidates.
  • Recipient of grant awards.
 
Associate Professor
  • Doctorate in Biotechnology/Microbiology or Biochemistry.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of teaching experience at a university level.
  • Publications in DHET-accredited journals [minimum of seven DHET-accredited publications over the preceding three years].
  • Evidence of successful supervision of postgraduate students [minimum of two Master’s students and one Doctoral candidate].

 Senior Lecturer
  • Experience at a university level.

Lecturer
  • Master's degree in Biotechnology/Microbiology or Biochemistry.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience at a university level.
 
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Extensive experience/comprehensive knowledge of Enzyme Technology or Plant Biotechnology or Industrial Biotechnology, or Computational Biology, with a willingness to spearhead research in these areas.
  • Collaboration with local and international researchers.
  • Design and development of curricula for programmes.
  • Proficiency in blended teaching and learning.
  • Track record of interactions with industry and participation in community engagement projects.
 
SUMMARY OF DUTIES 
  • Teach Biology, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the Food Science/Biotechnology Programmes and to all faculties to which the Faculty of Applied Sciences renders a service in undergraduate and honours level programmes.
  • Manage/co-ordinate academic and research portfolios.
  • Supervise undergraduate/postgraduate students.
  • Participate in community engagement projects.
  • Perform other duties as determined by the Head of Department.
