TECHNICAL OFFICER – CARTOGRAPHY: GIS AND SCIENTIFIC DATABASE MANAGEMENT
Salary:
 R 446 935.00 Cost to Company, per annum
Peromnes Grade: 10
Location: Head Office - Pretoria
Reporting Line: Manager - GIS and Scientific Database Management
Overall Job Purpose: Produce high quality cartographic products in the form of maps and web services
 
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Support the collating of research data and conducts on-the-spot basic error checking
  • Provide technical support and assistance for research projects
  • Preparation for and participation in research activities under supervision
  • Accurate and timely capturing and evaluation of geological, geophysical and geochemical data
  • Perform data transformations, classifications, attribute data cleaning, working with database files
  • Support the preparation of scientific data and routine interpretation
  • Record and represent scientific data in the required format as and when required
  • Perform administration and basic reporting
  • Assist in the implementation of methodologies, policies, systems and procedures
  • Apply operational standards and consolidate methodologies, policies, systems and procedures
  • Operate in a networked environment with centralised servers and printers and standard operating systems including GIS and graphic software packages
  • Undertake under supervision technical scientific functions and tasks that require basic interpretation
  • Dissemination of technical scientific data on request in summarised form
  • Maintain a safe production environment or part thereof according to set routine tasks
  • Liaise with scientists and stakeholders on aspects related to map production
  • Validate material submissions to ensure completeness and accuracy before map production
  • Deliver professional, high quality cartographic products utilizing GIS and related software
  • Analyze and resolve cartographic problems independently
  • Provide technical guidance to junior cartographers and interns on cartographic matters
  • Complete own projects tasks and follow-up as directed and/or instructed
  • Escalate and report progress and/or any other technical problems to supervisor
  • Participate and contribute to the achievement of allocated deliverables in the project environment
  • Perform all assigned work according to operating procedures for ISO certification
  • Adherence to GIS Standard Operating Procedures
  • Assist in development of databases, data management and subsequent analysis
  • Participate in data processing and validate into databases
  • Conduct on-the-job coaching of new users on scientific equipment to facilitate skills/knowledge transfer
  • Participate in Continuous Professional Development initiatives/interventions in order to keep up with new technologies and procedures
  • Complete and submit own Personal Development Plans

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • National Diploma in Cartography or GIS plus 2 years’ experience or
  • B Degree within the GIS environment
  • Registration with relevant Professional Body will be an added advantage
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of GIS software
  • Knowledge of multimedia products and graphic software packages used in map production
  • Intermediate proficiency level and understanding of GIS methodologies and models
  • Basic knowledge of the interaction and relationships between this GIS software and databases
  • Exposure to various cartographic tools and systems
  • Exposure in the application of Geographical Information System (GIS)
  • Basic knowledge of GIS software and familiarity with relational database design Understanding of ISO processes and standards
  • Understanding of project management systems and tools
  • Valid Driver’s Licence
