JUNIOR SCIENTIST: GIS AND SCIENTIFIC DATABASE MANAGEMENT
Salary: R 535 482.00 Cost to Company, per annum

Location: Head Office :Pretoria
Reporting Line: Manager: GIS and Scientific Database Management
Overall Job Purpose: Contribute to the development and maintenance of the GIS cooperate databases.
Key responsibilities:
- Conducts research with minimum supervision
- Conducts moderately simple geo-scientific investigations or research under guidance and supervision
- Participate in data interpretation and production of reports, maps, database, etc.
- Participates in statutory projects and occasionally commercial projects
- Provide technical scientific data, information and advice
- Support the collating of research data and conducts on-the-spot basic error checking
- Provide technical support and assistance for research projects
- Accurate and timely capturing and evaluation of geological, geophysical and geochemical data
- Perform data transformations, classifications, attribute data cleaning, working with database files
- Support the preparation of scientific data and routine interpretation
- Record and represent scientific data in the required format as and when required
- Perform administration and basic reporting
- Participates in statutory and occasionally commercial projects and publishes research findings internally and or externally.
- Perform all assigned work according to operating procedures for ISO certification
- Adherence to GIS Standard Operating Procedures
- Assist in development of databases, data management and subsequent analysis
- Participate in data processing and validate into databases
- Give limited scientific advice to the public and private sector organizations within established guidelines
- Communicate and/or notify to the relevant line of authority/ line manager the consumable requirements
- Follow up on the consumables requests made until delivery and storage
- Timeous and accurate completion of time-sheet for all project related tasks
- Conduct on-the-job coaching of new users on scientific equipment to facilitate skills/knowledge transfer
- Participate in Continuous Professional Development initiatives/interventions in order to keep up with new technologies and procedures
- Complete and submit own Personal Development Plans
Key personal attributes and required skills:
- Practical exposure and experience in the application of Geographical Information Systems
- Competent in data analytics in geoscience environment
- Knowledge of the relationship between this GIS software and databases
- Knowledge of general mapping principles, spatial analysis, remote sensing, and cartography
- Project Management
- Computer literacy
- Presentation and facilitation skills
- Communication skills (Oral and Written)
- Teamwork and collaboration
- Report writing skills
- Valid Drivers Licence
Qualifications and experience:
- BSc Hons Geology or equivalent
- Registration with relevant Professional Body will be an added advantage
- Basic knowledge of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and programming will be an added advantage.
- Valid Driver’s Licence
