AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (ARC)
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.
The ARC-Onderstepoort Veterinary Research (ARC-OVR) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following positions at Pretoria:
SPECIALIST RESEARCHER: ENTOMOLOGY
Key Performance Areas:
Project Management: Identify, initiate, design, access funding and conduct research projects on insects of veterinary importance,
Produce progress and final reports in fulfilment of contract requirements to external funders,
Create, managed and report on project budgets according to the requirements as stipulated by the
ARC management (internally and externally),
Liaise with National and International funders and other role players on project initiation, objectives, progress and funding,
Provide guidance/help/ on-the-job training and supervise technical assistance and contract workers appointed in the project,
Evaluate subordinates annually for their performance by means of the set performance evaluations of the ARC,
Identify learning opportunities (formal and informal) for subordinates,
Technology Transfer: Act as promoter, co-promoter for postgraduate students at tertiary institutions,
Give informal lectures on entomology to promote the activities of the ARC.
Scientific Status: Publish research results in high impact international journals,
Reference scientific articles and project proposals for international journals and funding bodies.
Willing to serve on the editorial committee of international journals,
To be recognised in the international arena and to form part of international funded projects.
Diagnostics: Routine identification of lice and fleas and information on the control of these and other entomological pests.
Infrastructure maintenance and self-development: Identify, acquire, upgrade, and maintain physical assets such as property, buildings, technology and equipment needed in the section,
Continually update knowledge and develop skills, ad translate knowledge of advances in the area into research activity,
Participate in the management, maintenance and expansion of the National Collection of Insects of Veterinary Importance with specific reference to tsetse colonisation,
Participate in Programme and Institute-related administrative and other duties as requested by the line manager,
Ensure compliance with SHE/OHS policies and procedures.
Requirements:
A Doctoral degree in Entomology or Parasitology or equivalent,
NRF rating: at least C level,
Relevant experiences in epidemiology and vector biology. Experience in molecular biology is desirable or the will to become proficient in this. A good knowledge of statistical methods and Geographical Information systems (GIS) will be an advantage,
Ability to execute and participate in multi-disciplinary research projects,
A good publication record will be essential in peer reviewed journals,
Evidence of sourcing or obtaining research funds will be an advantage,
Evidence of student training and supervision at PhD level,
Excellent communication skills written and verbal,
Good administration and record keeping skills will an advantage,
Must be able to work independently, reliable, have good common sense, communication skills, diplomacy, patience and perseverance.

RESEARCH TEAM MANAGER: DIAGNOSTICS SERVICES
Key Performance Areas:
Provide leadership in provision of quality diagnostic services by the Campus,
Oversee, monitor, evaluate and communicate (quarterly) programme activities,
Manage and co-ordinate the successful execution and completion of projects within the programme in line with the Campus Operational Plan, ARC Business Plan and overall strategy of the ARC and according to scientific standards, within budget and on time,
Develop and Identify programme annual budget based on planned projects, manage budget allocated to projects within programme within budget and on time for the year,
Ensure effective transfer of technology and promotion in form of products, services, courses and other events according to client needs,
Ensure that personnel are recruited, trained, optimally utilized and performance evaluated to contribute to the success of the organization in order to achieve targets of the division,
Oversee the improvement of and development of diagnostic tests to maintain and improve the Campus’s role as the organization of choice in diagnostics and diagnostic development,
Select and support promising/innovative research projects,
Peer recognition as a scientist/manager of science on a national and international level,
Ensure timely provision of diagnostic test results to clients with stipulated turnaround times,
Monitor research outputs and compare with benchmark,
Evaluate scientific presentations/manuscripts,
Identify and facilitate cross-cutting research projects,
Coordinate applications for funding within the programme,
Review and approve all research proposals that are sent out of the programme,
Provide support to the Diagnostic/OIE Reference Laboratories,
Capacity building (mentoring, teaching and supervision).
Requirements:
BVSc with an MSc degree,
PhD will be an added advantage,
3-5 years of experience in a veterinary diagnostic environment,
Must be registered with SAVC,
Knowledge of diagnostic, controlled and notifiable diseases of SA and transboundary animal disease,
Knowledge of relevant animal diseases Act, Act 35 0f 1984,
Knowledge of international prescripts such as OIE manual,
Staff management skills and good record of scientific achievement in biological sciences, including peer reviewed publications,
Ability to mobilize and manage resources,
Demonstrated ability to coordinate and facilitate a complex portfolio of research projects,
Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to create and maintain successful scientific alliances/networks locally and internationally,
Ability to meet and exceed key performance indicators as directed by the SMR,
Student mentorship/supervision.

RESEARCHER: RESIDUE ANALYSIS
Key Performance Areas:
The official will be responsible for analytical method development and validations,
Ensure that internationally accepted methodologies are validated and implemented in the Laboratory,
Planning the strategic research objectives of the laboratory and for writing scientific proposals, publications, as well as the design and execution of Research Projects,
Responding to funding opportunities as they arise and plan project activities within the laboratory,
Engage in writing project proposals, attending strategic and scientific meetings and assists other project leaders/scientists within the OVI and the ARC,
Communication and collaboration with both national and international clients must be undertaken to ensure the networking of the laboratory,
Operate according to the Quality Management System of the laboratory (i.e. following all procedures, policies and technical SOPs) and have the task of improving the quality system through appropriate policies and SOP’s in collaboration with the Quality Manager,
Technical signatory for the chromatographic techniques.
Requirements:
PhD in Analytical Chemistry plus 3 years’ experience,
MSc Analytical Chemistry plus 10 years’ Experience,
Good publication record,
Evidence of sourcing or obtaining research funds,
Excellent interpersonal skills.
