LABORATORY ASSISTANT – IN VITRO GENEBANK (12 Months fixed term contract)
Salary R 130 007 – 195 014 all- inclusive remuneration package
Key Performance Areas:
Function in a team responsible for conservation and maintenance of accessions in the ARC-VIMP National Public Goods In Vitro Genebank collection consisting of vegetatively propagated roots and tuber crops, industrial and medicinal crop species) using plant tissue culture methods;
This position includes a primary function of maintaining the overall hygienic and sanitary conditions in the entire Genebank, as well as a secondary dual function of assisting with general laboratory duties where required;
General cleaning of all areas in the Genebank (i.e. dusting, sweeping, mopping, polishing, cleaning windows and walls);
Ensure that relevant laboratory glassware and equipment is cleaned, maintained, and stored correctly;
Washing and ironing of laboratory coats and replenishment of other PPE in designated areas;
Emptying of dustbins on a daily basis;
Perform correct labelling, culturing and tracking of plant materials and conduct checks to validate;
Keep accurate records of daily operations to ensure traceability;
Capturing of procedural data on a relevant system in line with quality assurance measures;
Use of proper aseptic techniques for initiation and sub culturing of plant materials;
Completion of Performance & Development Agreements (PDAs) and Evaluations (PDEs) with line manager;
Compliance with cleaning best practice and with all Occupational Health and Safety & Environment (OHSE) regulations as well as HCM policies and procedures.
Requirements:
Grade 10, Grade 12 will be an added advantage;
Good written and oral communication skills including ability to work with other members of the same team;
Although this position is mainly laboratory based, the person assigned to this position will also be required to assist in the glasshouse and outdoors when necessary during sampling and rejuvenation of accessions;
Experience in a tissue culture laboratory or any other laboratory would be an advantage;
Willing to learn and improve, and to accept feedback and criticism towards the greater good;
Able to work independently and unsupervised and is reliable, self-motivated and a hard-worker;
Knowledge of computer programs (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) would be an advantage;
Valid driver’s licence added advantage.

Requirements:
Grade 12;
Knowledge of plant tissue culture procedures and plant production through micro propagation would be an advantage;
Knowledge of laboratory and equipment operations. Experience in a tissue culture laboratory or any other laboratory would be an advantage;

Provides scientific leadership in meat science and technology research and development;
Manages the quality of science of the research programme including maintaining the quality of accepted scientific standards of excellence;
Plans and coordinates specialised research within a single or multi-disciplinary team;
Publishes peer-reviewed and semi-scientific articles;
Renders specialised analytical and scientific services;
Markets the research programme through the establishment of appropriate national and international networks and partnerships;

RESEARCHER: VDD - TRANSBOUNDARY ANIMAL DISEASES
Salary (R503 659 – R755 489 pa) all-inclusive Remuneration Package
Key Performance Areas:
The incumbent will be involved in research activities on transboundary animal diseases such as foot and mouth disease and African Swine fever;
Performing all research work mainly in a biosafety level 3 (BSL3) laboratory and adhering to all rules and regulations thereof, including a five-day quarantine period before visiting an area, feedlot or abattoir were cloven hoofed animals are housed once you have been in the BSL3 laboratory;
Research work will focus on but is not limited to the development of improved vaccines and diagnostic assays.
Management of projects: initiate, manage and contribute to research projects;
Writes and submits research proposals, Sources new National research opportunities;
Compile detailed reports and seek approval for final reports;
Publishes popular, semi-scientific and peer-reviewed papers (in journals with high impact factor), and seeks networking opportunities;
Attend scientific gatherings, be aware of intellectual property, disseminate research results by presenting oral and poster contributions;
Plans and co-ordinates research activities within single or multidisciplinary team;
Manage projects: initiate, manage and contribute to new research projects;
Manage project budgets: is accountable for compiling and managing project budget and develops business cases for all project expenditure requirements;
Management of human resources: identifies the need for human resources and manages them;
Supports senior research team in special research projects;
Identifies and manages resource needs;
Identifies risks and mitigation plans within the research focus area;
Maintain and manage assets from research activities;
Human capacity development: Develops own capacity at an appropriate level. Identifies and participates in own learning opportunities. Supervise or co-supervise students; and

Requirements:
PhD in Veterinary Virology, molecular biology, diagnostic development, life sciences or related disciplines, with at least 3 years research experience post Masters level;
Knowledge of virology and immunology laboratory techniques;
The following would be an advantage:
A tertiary major in Genetics, Microbiology or Biochemistry;
A track record of publications (at least 3 peer reviewed publications related to the advertised post), supervising students (MSc and PhD) and obtaining research funding;
Participating as a speaker nationally and internationally and show competence in presenting research results;
Knowledge and experience in DNA cloning and molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid extraction, cDNA synthesis, specialized PCR techniques as well as trouble shooting of PCRs, protein expression systems, cell culture, serological techniques as well as DNA sequencing, including NGS and analysis and editing of sequences using specific software thereof;
Experience in virology and immunology related laboratory techniques;
Knowledge in developing improved vaccines through genetic engineering and diagnostic assays such as ELISA’s and VNTS;
Knowledge/experience in phage display technology;
Registration with a relevant profession council (e.g. SAVC or SACNASP);

Performing all research work mainly in a biosafety level 3 (BSL3) laboratory and adhering to all rules and regulations thereof, including a five-day quarantine period before visiting an area, feedlot or abattoir were cloven hoofed animals are housed once you have been in the BSL3 laboratory;
Research work will focus on but is not limited to the development of improved vaccines and diagnostic assays.
Management of projects: initiate, manage and contribute to research projects;
Writes and submits research proposals, Sources new National research opportunities;
Compile detailed reports and seek approval for final reports;
Publishes popular, semi-scientific and peer-reviewed papers (in journals with high impact factor), and seeks networking opportunities;
Attend scientific gatherings, be aware of intellectual property, disseminate research results by presenting oral and poster contributions;
Plans and co-ordinates research activities within single or multidisciplinary team;

Manage project budgets: is accountable for compiling and managing project budget and develops business cases for all project expenditure requirements;
Management of human resources: identifies the need for human resources and manages them;
Supports senior research team in special research projects;

Maintain and manage assets from research activities;
Human capacity development: Develops own capacity at an appropriate level. Identifies and participates in own learning opportunities. Supervise or co-supervise students; and

Requirements:
PhD in Veterinary Virology, molecular biology, diagnostic development, life sciences or related disciplines, with at least 3 years research experience post Masters level;
Knowledge of virology and immunology laboratory techniques;
The following would be an advantage:
A tertiary major in Genetics, Microbiology or Biochemistry;
A track record of publications (at least 3 peer reviewed publications related to the advertised post), supervising students (MSc and PhD) and obtaining research funding;
Participating as a speaker nationally and internationally and show competence in presenting research results;
Knowledge and experience in DNA cloning and molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid extraction, cDNA synthesis, specialized PCR techniques as well as trouble shooting of PCRs, protein expression systems, cell culture, serological techniques as well as DNA sequencing, including NGS and analysis and editing of sequences using specific software thereof;
Experience in virology and immunology related laboratory techniques;
Knowledge in developing improved vaccines through genetic engineering and diagnostic assays such as ELISA’s and VNTS;
Knowledge/experience in phage display technology;
Registration with a relevant profession council (e.g. SAVC or SACNASP);
Network of National and International partnerships and networks; and
Strategic and operational planning skills and expertise.

Key Performance Areas:
Preparation of chemical solutions and growth media,
Cleaning and washing glassware and laboratory equipment,
Collecting, storing and stocktaking of research materials,
Waste management,
Daily monitoring of temperature and functionality of air conditioners in collection halls, ultralow freezers and collection cold rooms,
Perform pest checks in the fungorium (dried collection) and the cold rooms (living collections),
