Job Description

Analytical and Diagnostic Services

  • Receive, register, final review of results and report on analyses,
  • Invoicing on lab management systems,

  • Implement and update technical SOP’s,
  • Validate test methods in the laboratory,
  • Perform routine water and soil analyses on ICP-OES/ICP-MS instrument and other laboratory instruments,

  • Maintain and update lab book and filling of raw data, all reports, and Invoices for the project,
  • Plan work activities as directed by work schedule,
  • Do trouble shooting on equipment and procedures used,
  • Train personnel and interns on different techniques,
  • Maintain work area and facilities clean,

Quality Control

  • Maintain the quality control system; therefore, follow all procedures and SOPs in the quality control system,
  • Write and update methods and validation documents,
  • Monitor analytical standards,
  • Verify or calibrate equipment as required,

Laboratory Safety and compliance

  • Adhere to the Health and Safety regulations,
  • Supervise health and safety regulations in the lab,
  • Adhere to good housekeeping and GLP in the laboratory,

 

Job Requirements

  • National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry.
  • Bachelor's Degree or BTech in Analytical Chemistry. 
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in water and soil analysis methods performing routing analysis on ICP-OES & ICP-MS instruments. Knowledge on how to process data and interpret data from the instrument is important.
  • Oversee and maintain the operations of the ICP-OES & ICP-MS instruments,
  • Troubleshooting, conducting preventative maintenance, calibration and doing minor repairs,
  • Organizing workflow and ensuring that samples are tested in accordance with customer requests,
  • Coordinate proficiency testing
  • Registration with relevant scientific registration body is an advantage.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Communication and planning skills.

Job Description

  • Assist other researchers to expand the IKS-based research, development for prevention and treatment of animal diseases project to include sustainable animal production.
  • Accept responsibility for the work package on “Clinical Translation, One Health Integration and Ethical Co-Creation of Ethno veterinary Knowledge for Sustainable Livestock Production in South Africa” of the aforementioned project.
  • Training of extension officers, as part of the Kaonafatso ya Dikgomo project on animal health and the development of a training manual.
  • Collaborate in a project titled “Global Methane Genetics Initiative: Accelerating reduced emissions in indigenous breeds in Africa.” Part of this project involves the collection of rumen fluid samples and the appointee will be responsible for this task.
  • The expertise and skills of the research veterinarian will also be needed in a number of other projects funded by the Department of Agriculture related to sustainable climate-smart livestock production and product quality.
  • Stand in and support the in-house veterinarian with normal routine tasks when necessary.

Project Management & Coordination

  • Responsible for coordinating the research, development and innovation for that part of the research that the incumbent is responsible for.
  • Identifies the needed resources (Equipment and Research Materials), manages and ensures optimal utilization to enhance impact.

  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science.
  • Professional membership of the South African Veterinary Council.

Job Requirements

  • Doctoral degree (PhD or DSc) with post-doctoral research experience in Plant Science, Crop Science, or a closely related field.

  • A minimum of 25 peer-reviewed scientific publications.
  • Experience in Small Grains sector will be an added advantage.
  • At least 10 years’ experience at middle management level.
  • Demonstrated strong research output and fundraising track record, including competitive grants.
  • Proven capability in project and programme management, partnership development, and collaborative research.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, monitoring, and control skills, with strong written and verbal communication abilities.
