The Desmond Tutu TB Centre (DTTC) is a world-leading research organisation in the field of child and adolescent TB. The DTTC carries out research in a diverse range of 

disciplines, including clinical, epidemiological, microbiological, immunological, pharmacological, health economic, socio-behavioural, and mathematical modelling research. 

 

The DTTC is seeking the full-time commitment of a research nurse to assist in the DEFIANT study.

 

This position will be based at the main offices of the Desmond Tutu TB Centre (DTTC) at the Tygerberg campus. The incumbent will be required to visit clinics in the larger 

Cape Metropole area for participant recruitment.

 

Purpose of the position

Ensuring accurate and effective project activities and providing supervisory, clinical and administrative support to the study team and study clinician.

Duties/Pligte

  • Screening and recruiting eligible participants according to study protocol.
  • Conducting informed consent procedures in accordance with ethical and regulatory requirements.
  • Performing clinical assessments as per the study protocol.
  • Collecting sputum, blood and other study samples, and organising for transport of samples to relevant laboratories.
  • Administering research questionnaires and collecting study data.
  • Ensuring adherence to study protocols and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards.
  • Maintaining accurate and complete study documentation.
  • Supporting participant follow-up and retention activities.
  • Performing quality control on all study documents and ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Tracing participants by means of home and clinic visits and telephonic contact.
  • General administration, stock and inventory of project supplies.
  • Conducting telephonic study visits and retention calls.
  • Performing all duties within the context of the mission, vision and values statement of Stellenbosch University.

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

  • Registered Professional Nursing qualification.
  • Good Clinical Practice and Human Subjects Protection certification.
  • Current valid professional registration with the relevant regulatory body (SANC).
  • At least three years' phlebotomy/sample collection experience in children/adolescents.
  • Three years' experience working in the research environment or in health care facilities.
  • Previous clinical research experience working with lung health in adolescents.
  • Excellent computer literacy with sound knowledge of email, MS Word, and MS Teams.
  • Willingness to travel between health facilities independently to conduct recruiting activities.
  • The ability to speak English and, additionally, either isiXhosa OR Afrikaans.
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours when needed.
  • Administration skills and an organised, motivated approach to work.
  • A valid driver's licence, and driving experience in various communities in the Cape Metropole.

Duties/Pligte

  • Transporting staff and students from the peripheral areas on campus to central campus daily as per schedule.
  • Completing daily trip records and relevant administrative tasks.
  • Ensuring full compliance with traffic laws, University policies and safety procedures.
  • Maintaining vehicle safety, cleanliness and roadworthiness, including routine inspections and reporting of defects.
  • Enforcing passenger safety and responding appropriately to emergencies/incidents.
  • Acting as a key link between drivers and management, ensuring effective communication.
  • Coordinating driver schedules, leave and route coverage to ensure uninterrupted service.
  • Assisting with performance feedback, meetings and operational improvements.

The primary duty of this member is the proactive patrolling on foot and motorcycle.

The following duties are also required of the member:

Senior Research Nurse (2 positions): Neonatal Infection Research (Post Level 9)

The Neonatal Infection Research Nurse in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at Stellenbosch University (SU) will work on several neonatal infection studies including the NeoSep1 clinical trial and other neonatal sepsis studies. The research nurse is required on a 12-month fixed-term contract to perform participant screening, enrolment, preparing and administration of intravenous trial antibiotics, data collection, adverse event reporting, participant follow-up, administrative assistance, and data entry. This post requires flexibility, including willingness to work night duty and weekends in accordance with the research requirements.

Die Neonatale Infeksienavorsingsverpleegster in die Departement Pediatrie en Kindergesondheid by die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) sal aan verskeie neonatale infeksiestudies werk, insluitend die NeoSep1 kliniese proefneming en ander neonatale sepsisstudies. Die navorsingsverpleegster word op 'n 12-maande vastetermynkontrak benodig om deelnemer-sifting, inskrywing, voorbereiding en toediening van binneaarse proef-antibiotika, data-insameling, rapportering van nadelige gebeurtenisse, deelnemer-opvolg, administratiewe bystand en data-invoer uit te voer.   • Working closely with the neonatal research doctors and other investigators on the studies.
  • Identifying, screening, obtaining consent and enrolling eligible participants for the neonatal infection studies.
  • Preparing and administering intravenous trial antibiotics to babies.
  • Collecting, recording and capturing study data and medical information according to study guidelines.
  • Following up enrolled patients until hospital discharge and/or contacting them telephonically following hospital discharge.
  • Organising and curating study records and data.
  • Providing weekly updates on new study recruits and follow-up statistics.
  • Assisting with reporting of adverse events to HREC and SAHPRA.
  • General research administration.

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

  • Professional Nurse with a degree/diploma in nursing.
  • Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
  • At least two years' experience in neonatology and administering intravenous antibiotics to neonates (essential).
  • Experience with the administration of intravenous antibiotics to neonates in the past five years.
  • The ability to place intravenous cannulae in neonates.
  • Willingness to work on a shift schedule (specifically nightshifts), including weekends as needed.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Good administrative skills and experience.
  • An interest and/or experience in clinical research;
  • Basic computer skills and willingness to learn new research and data management skills.

The Faculty of Law at Stellenbosch University (SU) is looking to fill a vacancy in the Department of Private Law. The Department of Private Law is responsible for teaching several of the core modules in the LLB curriculum. This includes the Law of Persons, Family Law, African Customary Law, Law of Succession, Property Law, Law of Civil Procedure, Law of Contract, Law of Delict and Specific Contracts. The Department also offers various electives at final year level and a selection of modules at postgraduate level, including modules which focus on Family Law and Children's Rights. The main responsibility of the incumbent will be to contribute to excellence in the Faculty of Law. The incumbent will lecture primarily in the field of Children's Rights and Family Law, but will also assume further teaching responsibilities within the Department and Faculty, taking into account relevant factors. The incumbent will furthermore conduct research that focuses on Children's Rights and/or Family Law and provide postgraduate supervision that focuses on one or both of these areas.
