Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The purpose of this position within Technology Transfer and Innovation Support (TTIS) is to drive the commercialisation of intellectual property (IP) and innovations arising from NWU research by enabling the identification and assessment of commercialisation opportunities, and the development and implementation of strategies that maximise their societal and economic impact. The Senior Specialist: Commercialisation provides specialist expertise across the commercialisation lifecycle, working collaboratively with NWU researchers and innovators, as well as external stakeholders including funders, industry partners, investors, and commercialisation and development partners, to facilitate technology transfer, strengthen innovation partnerships, and translate research outputs into sustainable commercial and societal value.

 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Technology development support and pre-commercialisation activities.

  • Engaging with NWU research and innovation community to source appropriate innovation projects and maintaining a project pipeline.
  • Exploring, identifying and evaluating NWU technologies and innovations with prospects of intellectual property protection and commercialisation.
  • Advising and engaging NWU researchers and innovators on opportunities for protection and commercialisation of NWU intellectual property.
  • Handling, evaluating and finalising innovation disclosures.
  • Facilitation of IP protection processes.
  • Undertaking prior art searches and analysing patent landscapes.
  • Performing competitive analyses and market research.
  • Fund-raising for technologies and innovation projects.
  • Finding industry partners collaborative development of new products and solutions.                          

2. Management of individual commercialisation projects & implementation of commercialisation strategy and transactions

  • Critically assessing projects and innovations for commercially viability and licencing opportunities.
  • Developing commercialisation roadmaps with understanding of current and future opportunities.
  • Proactive identification of project risks and portfolio opportunities.
  • Developing commercialisation strategies for innovations and technologies.
  • Writing, re-modelling and/or assessing proposals and business plans for technology development and commercialisation.
  • Drive the execution of commercialisation strategies to deal conclusion.
  • Evaluating IP using appropriate IP valuation methodologies.
  • Engaging in structuring and negotiations of licencing agreements.

3. Internal and external stakeholder engagements

  • Visiting of NWU departments/units/entities to encourage and source for potential technologies/ new IP.
  • Supporting the development of networks within technology industries.
  • Maintaining relationships with external stakeholders such as funders, government agencies and industry partners.
  • Developing and maintaining relevant stakeholder database(s).

4. Marketing and promotion of innovations and technologies

  • Implementation of marketing strategies to increase the visibility of NWU’s innovations and partnership opportunities for commercialisation.
  • Preparing innovation and technology marketing material for publication on various platforms.
  • Identifying and pursuing appropriate marketing opportunities for NWU innovations.

5. Training and awareness

  • Preparing and delivering presentations, webinars, workshops on IP, technology transfer and commercialisation to various audiences.

6.  Other

  • Implementation of quality process and records management.

 

Minimum requirements

  • A Bachelor degree / Bachelor honours degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) (NQF Level 8).
  • A minimum of five (5) years' experience in technology commercialisation environment or in new product development.
  • A proven track record in identifying, assessing and developing commercialisation opportunities arising from research outputs and market needs.
  • Demonstrable experience in managing multidisciplinary research, technology development and/or commercialisation projects involving multiple stakeholders within an innovation environment.
  • Sound knowledge and practical experience in applying the Intellectual Property Rights from Publicly Financed Research and Development Act and related legislation relevant to university innovation and technology transfer.
  • Demonstrable experience in developing funding proposals and business cases, securing funding, and managing project budgets and financial projections.
  • Proven capability in building and managing relationships with researchers, industry, government, funding agencies and other innovation stakeholders.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGE:

  • A Postgraduate qualification in Business/Finance/Project management (NQF Level 8).
  • A Master’s degree in Engineering/Science/Business (NQF Level 9).
  • Registered Technology Transfer Professional.
  • Knowledge and practical understanding of technology transfer processes and the functions of a Technology Transfer Office (TTO).
  • Experience in managing or coordinating innovation funding instruments, such as seed funds or similar mechanisms, including budgeting, monitoring, reporting and oversight of funded projects.
  • Practical experience in business incubation, entrepreneurship development or supporting the establishment and growth of technology-based start-ups.
  • Experience in developing and delivering training programmes, workshops or awareness initiatives on intellectual property (IP), technology transfer and commercialisation. 

 

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Strong communication, presentation, proposal and report-writing skills, with the capacity to engage, influence and negotiate effectively with researchers, industry partners, investors, funders and other stakeholders.
  • Proven capability in establishing and maintaining strategic networks with commercialisation partners, industry stakeholders, investors, government agencies and innovation ecosystem partners.
  • Proficiency in conducting IP assessments, prior art searches, market research, competitive analysis and commercial due diligence to evaluate technology opportunities.
  • Sound understanding of scientific and technical innovations, with the ability to translate complex concepts into commercially viable opportunities for non-academic audiences. Knowledge of product development pathways, technology readiness levels (TRLs) and relevant regulatory considerations for technology commercialisation.
  • Experience in developing funding applications, business cases and commercialisation proposals, including financial projections, budget development and monitoring of funded projects.
  • Capability to identify, evaluate and develop commercialisation opportunities arising from research outputs, industry needs and market opportunities.
  • Knowledge of intellectual property management and commercialisation processes, including IP protection strategies, licensing pathways and technology transfer transactions.

Field worker:

The Soil-Plant-Microbe Interactions group, under Prof. Olubukola Oluranti Babalola, seeks to recruit a suitably qualified Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the investigation of the Multi-Omics Mechanisms of Tolerance and Climatic Niche Adaptation in Soybeans: Addressing Soil Degradation and Farming System Challenges.

 

Minimum requirements

  • PhD in molecular agricultural biotechnology, agricultural genomics, computational biology, or a closely related field of multi-omics.
  • Ability to operate maximally in an interdisciplinary environment, using bioinformatics to analyze agricultural datasets and applying data science and machine learning (ML) techniques to perform analysis and predictions on these datasets.
  • The candidate must have demonstrable experience working with ML libraries in Python and/or R and be able to use version control systems such as git.
  • Proven ability to work independently within a research lab and support students.
  • Hands-on experience in field/molecular biology techniques in the related omics subject and programming.
  • A track record of publications related to the outlined research area with an emphasis on bioinformatics, multi-omics and machine learning.

 

Value and tenure

The stipend payable is currently R320 00.00 per year; if satisfactory performance is achieved, the Principal Investigator could extend it for a second and subsequent years for a total of 5 years and up to R20 000 for relocation expenses.

Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Senior Educational Developer position at the Potchefstroom Campus aligns with the operational and strategic priorities of the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL). The focus is particularly on strengthening faculty support for academic programme planning, curriculum renewal, teaching and learning enhancement, and student success

The Senior Educational Developer will play an important role in advising and guiding faculties on curriculum development processes, academic programme changes, programme reviews, and quality assurance and enhancement initiatives. This includes informed support on regulatory compliance in line with DHET, CHE, SAQA, relevant professional bodies, and NWU policies, as well as advising on academic programme planning that is aligned with institutional policy requirements and strategic directions.

The Senior Educational Developer will be expected to take a leadership role in guiding faculties on emerging trends in higher education, contemporary curriculum design principles, evidence-informed teaching and learning practices, and the professional development of academic staff. Through close collaboration with faculties and academic staff, the Senior Educational Developer will contribute to institutional capacity building, curriculum and teaching enhancement, blended learning support, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and the implementation of initiatives that align with the NWU Teaching and Learning Strategy and broader objectives for student success.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1. Academic Staff Development and Support:

  • Facilitate and support academic staff development initiatives and professional learning opportunities.
  • Support implementation of academic induction and Continuous Professional Learning (CPL) initiatives.
  • Facilitate workshops relating to teaching, learning, assessment, academic integrity, blended learning, AI in teaching and learning, and student success.
  • Support and participate in Teaching Awards initiatives, including information sessions, writing retreats, portfolio development support, and related teaching enhancement activities.
  • Provide support to academic staff on teaching and learning enhancement practices.

2. Faculty Support and Engagement:

  • Serve as faculty support representative within allocated faculties.

  • Participate in scholarship and research activities related to higher education teaching and learning.
  • Contribute to conference presentations, scholarly publications, and institutional teaching and learning projects.
  • Support evidence-informed educational development initiatives and reflective teaching practices.

 6. Institutional Support and Administration:

  • Participate in institutional CTL projects and teaching and learning initiatives.
  • Contribute to institutional reporting, committee activities, and administrative responsibilities related to teaching and learning support.
  • Collaborate with CTL teams and stakeholders in support of teaching and learning enhancement initiatives.

 

Minimum requirements

  • A Master's degree in Education, Higher Education, Curriculum Studies, or a related field (NQF Level 9).  
  • A minimum of five (5) years of  experience in higher education teaching and learning support Environment.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in academic staff development and/or educational development.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in teaching and learning data analysis, educational analytics, or both.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).

 

ADDED ADVANTAGE:

  • A formal qualification in Higher Education, Academic Development, Education, Curriculum Studies, or a related field (NQF Level 8).
  • A minimum of two (2) years' teaching experience in higher education.
  • A minimum of three (3) years' experience in curriculum design and development support within higher education.

Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION           

The African Wordnet Project is one of SADiLaR's specialisation projects and forms part of the infrastructure's longer-term strategic plan. The successful candidate will be responsible to manage various aspects of the specialization project including academic planning and research in collaboration with the UNISA node as well as technical and day-to-day project management. The position will therefore include a majority of normal academic responsibilities (publications, conference participation, academic oversight of teaching and learning type activities).

As part of the specialisation project, multiple workshops take place on a yearly basis. The successful candidate will therefore be part of the team responsible for coordinating training and activities in SADiLaR's ESCALATOR flagship programme, a national human capacity development programme which also ties to community engagement activities.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:      

Training and academic material development

Develop and oversee development of new training events, short courses and bespoke workshops within the ESCALATOR programme to ensure a coherent structure of the ESCALATOR programme offering in collaboration with the ESCALATOR team:

 ii. Design and develop training materials, resources, and documentation.

iii. Adapt existing training materials for different audiences and contexts.

iv. Coordination and academic oversight related to the ICAS (Institutional Committee for Academic Standards) process for approval of  short courses/ short learning programmes at the NWU.

 

 Teaching and learning and coordination of training and/or events

·       Coordination, managing and planning

·       Coordination and planning of ESCALATOR and African Wordnet Project events and training in line with available capacity at nodes,academic and/or support staff at SADiLaR and other collaborators and partners.

·       Develop and maintain database/CRM of trainers, available ESCALATOR courses.

·       Maintain database of developed training resources and course material.

·       Represent SADiLaR and the ESCALATOR programme at relevant national and international forums, conferences, and engagements as required.

·       Develop and maintain relationships with SADiLaR nodes, university partners, government stakeholders and international bodies in support of ESCALATOR's national mandate.

 

Teaching and learning

·       As part of teaching and learning responsibilities, assist and lead facilitation and lecturing activities as part of workshops, short courses and other training events within the broad SADiLaR ESCALATOR flagship programme.

·       Provide support and mentorship to guest trainers and facilitators.

·       Training of linguists involved in the African Wordnet project, in the effective use of all software and tools used in the project, as well as technical assistance and ongoing support in their daily tasks.

 

Research        

·       Research on all aspects of language resource development and application as linked to the mandate of SADiLaR and the African Research Wordnet Project in particular.

·       Research and integrate best practices in digital humanities training methodologies as part of e.g., Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

 

(SoTL) projects.         

·       Strategic Planning, annual performance plan (APP) development and impact reporting

·       Contribute to the ESCALATOR's strategic planning and goal-setting 

·       Design and implement a monitoring and evaluation framework for ESCALATOR training activities, including pre- and post-training assessments, participant feedback, and longitudinal impact tracking.

·       Annual performance planning support for primarily academic staff involved with the ESCALATOR programme in in line with SMART goal setting, as per Audit Risk and Finance Committee directive, and to a secondary extent, support staff as well as staff at nodes linked to SADiLaR.

·       Co-create the Annual Performance Plan (APP) for ESCALATOR programme with ESCALATOR team.

·       Track and report on training metrics and training impact taking place in line with APP.

 

Proposal Development & Funding             

·       Identify and pursue new funding opportunities for ESCALATOR sustainability, African Wordnet Project as well as SADiLaR as an infrastructure.

·       Mentorship and/or developing project proposals and work packages primarily to the broad ESCALATOR programme.

 

Technical academic project management of the AfWN project including:                     

·       Reporting formally and informally to all stakeholders on progress in the development project.

·       Tracking progress and implementing steps to ensure project will meet deadlines.

·       Communicating with project team and stakeholders on a continuous basis.

·       Facilitating contracting and payments to team members

·       Ongoing quality control (in cooperation with linguists and collaborators), through automated tools and manual methods as appropriate.

·       Sourcing alternative funding opportunities and preparing draft proposals.

·       Communication with SADiLaR's technical team to assist in the design, testing and documentation of the development platform.

 

Minimum requirements

·       A Master’s degree on NQF Level 9 linked to Digital Language Resources, Linguistics, Natural Language Processing, Human Language Technologies.

·       A minimum of three (3) years’ experience Academic project management experience (funding proposals, general project administration)

·       A minimum of three (3) years’ Digital Language Resource creation experience.

·       A minimum of three (3) years’ scholarly experience within the domain on Human Language Technologies (Natural Language Processing).

·       A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in coordinating and training multiple project workers and collaborators.

·       A minimum of three (3) years’ experience with lexicographical resources e.g. wordnets in particular

·       A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in presenting various workshops and trainings.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGE:

·       A minimum of two (2) years’ experience General data management/modelling related experience (working with structured data, databases etc.)

·       Involvement/knowledgeable about existing ESCALATOR activities.

·       Membership/s with academic societies and/or associations.

 

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

·       Knowledge of methodologies applied in linguistic/literary studies especially in the more computational environment related to lexicographical resources e.g. wordnets.

·       Fully computer literate, i.e. familiarity with software utilised in the domain of Digital Humanities.

·       Ability to produce academic papers, conference contributions related to digital language resources as linked to SADiLaR or other infrastructures.

·       Experience with running workshops, training events and developing learning plans for bespoke workshops e.q. experience with Carpentries, or other related training and workshops.

1.  Service Delivery& Client Education

  •  Work closely with coaches, sport scientists, physiotherapists and recovery staff for athlete recovery planning.

  • Ensure athletes receive treatment within allocated times.
  • Support peak recovery periods during competitions and training camps or sport events.

2. Facility and Equipment Management

4. Professional Development

Archival management system: implementation, administration and governance

·          Responsible for the functional implementation, administration, governance, optimisation, and ongoing management of the archival management system to enable effective digital archival management, preservation, and access.

         This includes:

·      Coordinating the implementation, configuration, workflow development, testing, migration, integration, and operationalisation of the archival management and digital preservation systems (AtoM and Archivematica).

·      Developing, implementing, and maintaining metadata structures, archival description standards, authority records, controlled vocabularies, and data governance practices to ensure consistent and accurate description of archival collections.

·      Managing the ingest, quality assurance, validation, indexing, and migration of digitised archival material within the systems, ensuring accurate capture of metadata and digital objects within the archival management system.

·      Ensuring alignment between archival principles, digital preservation requirements, institutional records management practices, and system functionality.

·      Managing system-related archival workflows, user requirements, access controls, and continuous improvement initiatives.

·      Providing guidance, training, and support to users and stakeholders to promote effective utilisation of the system.

Photographic and digital archival collections management

·   Responsible for the acquisition, appraisal, processing, arrangement, description, preservation, and management of photographic and digital archival collections.

This includes:

·      Identifying, acquiring, and appraising historically significant photographs and digital archival material from internal and external stakeholders.

·      Processing, arranging, describing, and maintaining archival collections in accordance with archival standards and institutional requirements.

·      Maintaining collection inventories, catalogues, indexes, finding aids, and associated documentation to support access and preservation.

·      Managing the physical organisation, storage, and location control of photographic collections, including improvements to archival storage practices.

·      Supporting access to photographic and digital collections for research, institutional heritage, museum exhibitions, and other university purposes.

Rendering psychological support to students.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.    Therapeutic Service Delivery (Counselling and Psychotherapy):

  • Conduct counselling and psychotherapy with the Mahikeng campus students on individual and group basis including online and in-person. 
  • Cooperation and liaison with various multi-professional service providers on campus.

2.    Crisis-Intervention:

  • Render crisis intervention and short-term trauma intervention during and after office hours, according to a set schedule to Mahikeng Campus students.

 

3.    Peer Helper Program:

  • Coordinate residential peer-helpers within peer-helper program.
  • Coordination includes selection, training, development, supervision, and oversight of the peer helpers, as well as liaison with relevant stakeholders.

4.    Intervention / project development and / or service delivery:

5.    Psycho-Education Interventions:

6.    Psychometric Assessments:

7.    Support:
