Introduction

Mintek has an exciting opportunity for a Head in the Leaching department of the Hydrometallurgy Division. The Head: Leaching will lead the execution of multiple highly complex assignments/projects that require high levels of integration and specialised knowledge and skills, as well as strong guidance to subordinates to deliver impact. Knowledge and expertise at this level allows the incumbent to be seen as a leading contributor and technical integrator across disciplines more than a single research field, makes decisions which have a major impact on the research direction and outcomes at national level.

 

Job description

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS INDICATOR:

  • Interpret the organizational strategy to ensure that research is aligned with the organizational strategic
  • choices.
  • Operational: Systems design with integration of multiple disciplines/processes
  • Discoveries/Patents: Identify opportunities
  • Prepare large funding proposals to attract funding from a variety of sources for highly complex projects.
  • Ensure external revenue contribution to support activities of the research group.
  • Analyse and manage coordinated research projects addressing complex and often unique problems that are encountered by the specific industry sector. This involves thoroughly assessing the problem and conceptualizing the research so that is adequately addresses the opportunity and that there is an adequate value proposition for delivering the research.
  • Analyse, interpret and report on highly complex research outcomes and is regarded as a national expert in a broad field, or an international expert in a specialized field. This includes reports, publications, presentationsetc. at the level of national or international expert level.
  • Management of large multiyear projects and programmes, including resource and execution planning.
  • Responsible for technical signoff of the work of junior staff.
  • Responsible for significant equipment / facilities.
  • Work independently and provides instruction to junior staff. Receive no additional guidance and instruction
  • on unusual and complex problems.
  • Prepare reports, presentations and publications at the level of a national / international expert.
  • Lead, guide, mentor and train staff and supervise post-graduate students.

 

Minimum requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of MSc or MEng
  • Ideal: PhD in Extractive Metallurgy or in relevant scientific field relating to Hydrometallurgy Discipline

Job description

KEY PERFOMANCE INDICATORS:

  • Formulates R&D questions within a single field of S&T, be aware of trends in the relevant field and formulate ideas relating to technical projects,frame and develop research questions, design experiments, identify problems, evaluate and implement solutions.
  • Play a leading role in the execution of work as a chief investigator of projects, within the division/group.
  • Operational: Establish specifications, improve workflows, and introduce operating procedures at project level.

 Commercial

  • Prepare proposals under direct/limited supervision to Client satisfaction.
  • Design, operate and oversee discipline specific experimental work as required by Proposals and ensure that procedures are complied with, quality control and continual improvement are applied.
  • Collect and interpret data at a quantitative and qualitative level using discipline specific standard methodologies and procedures, including the preparation of analytical and descriptive narratives, ensuring that the interpretation is based on sound scientific / engineering theory.

Research and Development

  •  Prepare proposals under direct/limited supervision, including Open Call proposals.
  • Perform routine scientific and engineering research using standard methods, procedures and equipment. Act as a principal investigator on such projects.
  • Perform complex scientific and engineering research under supervision.
  • Contributor to IP development.

 

Minimum requirements

QUALIFICATION AND JOB KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED:

  •        Min: MEng or MSc
  •        Ideal: PhD or studying towards.
  •           At least 3 – 5 years vocational experience following first graduation in Hydrometallurgy processing of minerals or knowledge-based organisations.
  •           Exposure to Rare Earth Elements processing, leaching, recovery and separation.
  •           Exposure to, and an understanding of process simulation modelling.
  •        Exposure to water quality management, aqueous effluent treatment and recovery.

Job description

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:

Sourcing:

  • Custodian of the tendering process.
  • Assist in compiling the overall Procurement Plan for Mintek.
  • Sourcing of goods and service in line with the Procurement Plan.
  • Administering the RFI, RFP processes till completion.
  • Provide input on tender specifications in line with best practice and legislation and ascertain the readiness of tender specifications for the market.
  • Review all tender specifications for compliance with the procurement policy and procedures.
  • Conduct market research to determine the availability of suppliers and commodities in line with specific tender requirements.
  • Ensure all required approvals are sought throughout the lifecycle of the tender process.
  • Advertisement of tenders in approved media sources. · Coordination and facilitation of tender briefing sessions.
  • Oversee the evaluation, adjudication and award of tenders in line with legislative prescripts.
  • Coordinate, facilitate and participate in the tender committees’ and keep records of meetings thereof.

  • Champion and facilitate initiatives to foster the development of new suppliers in line with the company’s BBBEE requirements and preferential procurement legislation.
  • Manage the process of establishing suppliers for a panel of experts and general consumables following the SCM policy. 

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • The central point of contact for all tender queries internally and externally. Guide end-users, SCM staff, and management and service providers on the tendering process.
  • Build effective working relationships with internal customers, to enable Mintek to produce complete, accurate and relevant specifications to prepare requests for proposals across dedicated commodities.
  • Integrate SCM best practice in divisional planning and operations. Engage internal and external auditors when required.

Continued Improvement: ·

  • Participate in continuous professional development interventions to keep up with new technologies, sourcing best practices and procedures.
