DUTIES : Lead, plan, coordinate and monitor a comprehensive specialist Obstetrics and Gynaecology service, including antenatal, labour ward, obstetric theatre, inpatient, outpatient and emergency gynaecological services. Provide direct specialist care and expert consultation for high-risk, complex and referred patients and ensure appropriate escalation and continuity of care. Ensure safe, evidence-based, patient-centred care through approved policies, protocols, standard operating procedures and effective multidisciplinary teamwork. Lead maternal, perinatal and gynaecological clinical governance, including morbidity and mortality reviews, patient-safety incident reviews, clinical audits, quality-improvement projects and implementation of corrective actions. Coordinate referral pathways, outreach and specialist support to district hospitals and other referring facilities within the hospital’s drainage area, maintain effective liaison with tertiary and central referral services. Develop and implement departmental operational plans, service targets, clinical risk controls and performance-monitoring systems aligned with hospital and Departmental priorities. Manage and develop the medical workforce through appropriate deployment, duty rosters, supervision, mentorship, leave planning, performance management and succession planning. Promote undergraduate, continuing professional development, skills transfer and clinically relevant research. Ensure cost-effective stewardship of medicines, blood products, equipment, consumables, theatre time, beds and other scarce resources; identify and escalate critical resource risks promptly. Participate in hospital senior-management and strategic activities, support district and provincial programmes, and submit accurate clinical and management reports within required timeframes. Participate in the commuted overtime system and provide after-hours consultant leadership according to service needs. Demonstrated experience in clinical leadership and management of a regional or referral-level Obstetrics and Gynaecology service. Experience in maternal and perinatal clinical governance, teaching, research, quality improvement and medico-legal risk reduction. Willingness to support outreach and referral services within the uThukela District drainage area.

REQUIREMENTS Grade 1: Experience: Not Applicable. Foreign qualified candidates require 1 year relevant experience after registration as a Medical Practitioner with a recognized Foreign Health Professional Council, of whom it is not required to perform Community Service, as required in South Africa. Incumbents will be expected to work in the Department of Anaesthesia in Pietermaritzburg for at least one year. During which time they will receive appropriate training to pass the Diploma in Anaesthesia, (if this qualification is not already held). Anaesthetic Medical Officers will also be able to apply for a three-month rotation through Intensive Care during this year. Current Registration with SANC as Enrolled Nurse (2026 receipt) Knowledge, Skills And Competencies: Understanding of the nursing legislation and related legal and ethical nursing practices. Good interpersonal relations, communication skills, basic writing skills, basic interpersonal skills and ability to function and work as part of a team. Knowledge of Patient Rights Charter, Batho Pele Principles, Ethical Code of Conduct, basic labour Relations. All nursing care processes and procedures, nursing statutes, and other relevant legal frameworks, such as Nursing Act, Health Act, and scope of practice as a staff nurse. Planning and organizing, report writing skills. 

 

DUTIES : Ensure the rendering of nursing care under the direct and indirect supervision of a Registered Nurse as directed by the Scope of Practice. Provide health education according to the knowledge and Scope of Practice. Maintain client satisfaction through quality service, innovation and nursing care by upholding the principles of Batho Pele and Patients’ Rights and Responsibilities. Work as part of the multidisciplinary team to ensure good nursing care. Ensure that infection control and health and safety standards are maintained at all times. Ensure the effective, efficient and economical use of allocated resources including human resources. Maintain accurate records and confidentiality.
