Introduction
Mintek seeks to appoint an experienced leader who can shape the way the organisation manages, develops and grows its research and innovation enterprise. Reporting to the Executive Manager: RDI Operational Services, the Head: R&D Management will work with technical and functional leaders to strengthen research capability, optimise the R&D portfolio, build strategic partnerships and position Mintek for sustained research impact.
Job description
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
R&D Strategy and Portfolio Management:
- Lead the development and implementation of an integrated R&D management strategy aligned to Mintek’s strategic priorities.
- Translate strategic priorities into practical frameworks, governance mechanisms and measurable outcomes.
- Establish and continuously improve policies, systems, processes and tools that enable effective and efficient management of the R&D portfolio.
Research Capacity and Infrastructure:
- Provide strategic leadership in strengthening research capacity across Science, Engineering, & Technology (SET) Human Capital Programmes.
- Provide strategic direction for the development and effective utilisation of world-class research infrastructure and research environments.
- Ensure that research information assets, physical and virtual environments, and supporting capabilities enable high-quality research and innovation.
Research Excellence and Integrity:
- Champion a culture of research excellence, integrity and accountability across the organisation.
- Ensure that research management practices support both institutional priorities and recognised standards of research excellence and integrity.
Strategic Partnerships:
- Build relationships across government, academia, industry and other relevant research and innovation stakeholders.
- Work closely with technical division leadership to identify and pursue opportunities that enhance Mintek's visibility, networks and influence.
Financial Sustainability:
- Contribute to strategies that grow and diversify Mintek's revenue base to support sustainable investment in R&D and research infrastructure.
- Provide strategic leadership and support in the negotiation and management of significant enterprise-level R&D funding grants.
Minimum requirements
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum - Masters in Science or Engineering related field.
- Ideal - PhD in a Science or Engineering related field.
- Minimum 8 - 10 years’ experience in a research or knowledge-based organisation; a proven track record of at least five (5) years in R&D management; management and execution of research projects, incubating new initiatives, and conceptualising R&D policies.
- Experience in financial, HR, risk management, and R&D management processes.
- Strong leadership, stakeholder management, negotiation and communication capabilities.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Sound understanding of the national and international R&D funding landscape.
- R&D contract negotiations.

Introduction
Mintek has an exciting career opportunity for a Quantity Surveyor who will be responsible for producing contract/tender documentation, Bills of Quantities (BOQs), cost estimates, project financial monitoring and control, measuring of quantities and issuing of payment certificates for large, multi-million rands infrastructure and Mine Closure projects that involve the rehabilitation of ownerless and derelict mines. The incumbent will also be expected to assist with construction project management.
Job description
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:
Contract Documentation:
- Prepare full tender and contract documents and compile all specifications for applicable works ensuring that all documents accurately capture the nature, size and scope of the project.
- Measure quantities from drawings, designs and on site to prepare accurate BOQs and cost estimates for heavy earthworks and mine rehabilitation.
- Conducting pre-feasibility studies and community engagement.
- Conduct feasibility analysis and project scoping - including cost planning, value engineering, value management, cost benefit analysis and life-cycle costing.
- Provide coaching and guidance to less experienced staff, junior quantity surveyors and interns to increase the company’s technical competence.
Construction Supervision:
- Conduct on-site payment certificate measurements and issue contractor’s interim payment certificates.
- Provide cost related technical oversite to Resident Engineers.
- Address any on-site cost variations and issue Variation Orders.
- Attend Progress Meetings and arrange and facilitate technical/coordination meetings.
Project Coordination:
- Prepare monthly financial reports and cash-flow projections and be responsible for project
- cost/quantities tracking.
- Assist Project Manager in compiling quarterly reports for submission to DMR.
Stakeholder Management:
- Interact with key stakeholders to understand, anticipate and manage their expectations.
- Manage relations between the contractors and mining communities, ensuring that potential areas are managed or escalated to the client accordingly.
SHEQ management:
- Ensure that effective SHEQ procedures are in place so that contractors and workers operate in a safe and healthy environment.
- Ensure compliance with applicable legislation at all sites where Mintek is operating including Mine Health and Safety Act.
Minimum requirements
JOB KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- Knowledge of the public sector or mining industry.
- Strong project management and business development skills are required.
- 10 years’ quantity surveying experience involving heavy earthworks, mine rehabilitation and closure.
Nature of experience:
- Extensive Quantity Surveying experience including contract documentation and management.
- Project Management.
- Project finance tracking and management.
- Construction Monitoring.
- Good interpersonal relations.
- Mine Health and Safety Act.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum: BSc. Hon Quantity Surveying or equavalent.
- Ideal: MSc. Quantity Surveying/NQF Level 9 will be advantageous.
- Professional Registration (PrQS).
- Working knowledge of SHEQ, Risk Control and Legal Compliance legislation.
BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
- Ability to work on multiple projects at a time, monitor team performance and provide supervision.
