The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is therefore seeking to appoint an efficient and enthusiastic person to undertake the role of:
DATA SCIENTIST (CONTRACT)
Salary total package: Negotiable
Centre: Centurion

Job summary:
• Run numerical weather prediction or climate models in a High-Performance Computing environment,
• Apply post-processing methods to model output to verify the models,
• Analyse remote sensing data to understand to atmospheric processes,
• Assist with merging of remote sensing data and numerical weather prediction data to develop products for the very short-range forecasting timescale
• Assist with the extraction of weather or climate data for use by applications scientists to develop sector specific products.
• Work with atmospheric and marine research teams supporting development of numerical weather prediction output and analytics
Minimum Requirements and Attributes:
• A BSc Hons or M.Sc. (preferred) in one of the following or related disciplines:
· Meteorology
· Earth System Science
· Atmospheric Sciences
· Data Science,
· Applied Mathematics
· Statistics
· Computer Science
• Degree should include at least first year level physics and second year level Mathematics,
• Understanding of research process indicated by at least one peer reviewed publication lead by the applicant,
• Proficiency with programming and scripting for spatial analysis and statistics using one or more of the following, Python, R, Fortran, MATLAB, and Julia,
• Proficiency with Linux/Unix, Command line /shell scripting (bash, zsh).
• Experience working with large, multi-dimensional data (e.g. netCDF, GRIB, TIFF files) with excellent knowledge of coordinate systems, data formats and statistical conventions.
• Experience applying remote sensing data.
• Familiarity with numerical weather prediction or climate models.
• Familiarity with development good-practices (well-structured, modular code) and version control tools (e.g. git and github).
• Excellent team player
• Good communication and presentation skills

Work Integrated Learning Programme: LEARNER LIVING WITH DISABILITY.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) invites applications for eighteen months (18) Work Integrated Learning Programme.
We are looking for a TVET College learner living with disability to join our Work Integrated Learning Programme in the following field:-
• Financial Management N6 – 1 Position – Ref: FM 2022
Applicants must satisfy the following requirements:
• An applicant must be a learner living with a disability who has just completed an N6 in the above mentioned field of study.
• An applicant has been unemployed for a period of less than one-year after completion of the N6.
• An applicant will be required to submit their CV on the SAWS recruitment portal (clearly outlining ID, Address etc.)
• Must not have working experience
Successful candidates:
• Will be paid monthly stipend of R5 500.
• Will be responsible for arranging their own accommodation and transport to the respective SAWS Centurion office.

LEAD SCIENTIST: CLIMATE CHANGE AND VARIABILITY RESEARCH

Job Summary:
The position of Lead Scientist: Climate Change and Variability is tasked with driving innovation through Research and Development in climate change science. The position will conduct research related to climate change and variability, develop products and among others such that are listed in the key performance areas. The position will directly report to the Chief Scientist Climate Change and Variability or the Senior Manager Research.
Key performance areas:
• The incumbent will be responsible for the analyses of large data sets from the latest global and regional models
• Lead the effort of dynamical and/or statistical downscale of global/regional models to local scale
• He/she will interpret IPCC reports to extract information relevant for strengthening SAWS’s internal and national scientific position on climate change and its impacts • Proactively develop funding research proposals and manage the research efforts forthcoming
• Play a leading role in conducting and managing research projects and programmes related to climate change and variability, its socio-economic impacts and application development
• Lead and support the development of products and processes in support of the SAWS public goods and commercial services.
• Assist in evaluating research needs and advice in developing and maintaining the strategic direction of climate change research in the SAWS, in line with the international standards, practices and developments
• Participate in the support of relevant operational and/or meteorological systems
• Identify research gaps in the specific field and pursue methods to address these in cooperation with other SAWS divisions and sections and where relevant with external institutions
• Develop and nurture external collaboration with national and international institutions relevant to atmospheric research activities
• Represent the SAWS where appropriate on national or international scientific panels/committees or expert groups in an expert capacity
• Participate and lead stakeholders’ engagement meetings, trainings and workshops on climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies.
• Ensure the scientific integrity to international standards of the research activities in his/her field in the SAWS
• The suitable candidate should have a good understanding of climate change science and its applications and possess communication skills necessary to contribute to the advancement of the SAWS climate change programme
• Provide scientific guidance and project leadership to junior scientists and ensure teamwork in conducting research and reporting findings in reports and scientific journals and provide mentoring and scientific capacity building within SAWS.
• Participate in all activities related to the implementation and/or maintenance of the SAWS TQM system
• Act as co-promoter or University study leader.
Minimum Requirements:
• A minimum of a Masters studying towards a PhD qualification
• Advanced knowledge and experience in Atmospheric Science and/or Climate Change and Variability research applications with at least 5 to 10 years of working in research and development roles.
• Proven knowledge of LINUX shell scripting is required and programming in any language such as R, Python, FORTRAN, Matlab, etc.
• Proven records of successful project completion in a team-leader capacity or collaborator and at least 3 scientific publications relevant to this field in DHET accredited journals is essential.
