WORKING ON FIRE (WOF)
 
POSITION: GENERAL MANAGER
Location: Nelspruit, Mpumalanga
Salary: Negotiable 
Reports to: National Operations Manager
 
 
Job Profile:
The Working on Fire programme is a government-funded EPWP (Expanded Public Works Programme) aimed at providing employment and training opportunities to unemployed South African youth in order to provide Integrated Fire Management Services (IFMS) as a strategy for addressing the threat of unwanted wild land fires.
The Provincial General Manager (GM) is responsible for the overall strategic and operational leadership, management of and reporting on the Working on Fire programme in the province and reports to the Working on Fire Executive Committee via the National Operations Manager (NOM).
 
Key Performance Areas:
The strategic leadership and management roles encompass all the operational, occupational health and safety, financial, human resource management, and contractual aspects of the Working on Fire programme in the province in accordance with the company’s policies, strategy, values, BOPs (Best Operating Procedures), relevant legislative and regulatory requirements.
The Provincial General Manager is also responsible for the development and maintenance of partnership and stakeholder relations essential for the functioning of the Working on Fire programme in the province.
 
 
Job Requirements:
  • Degree/Diploma in Forestry/Environmental Management/Integrated Veld Fire Management/Fire Service Technology
  • Extensive knowledge of the Veld and Forest Act
  • A minimum of 5 years of senior management is required
  • Valid driver’s licence
 
Skills and Specifications:
The Provincial General Manager is a senior manager in the Working on Fire programme and requires the necessary experience and training to provide the leadership and management to a provincial management and the firefighter teams in the province.  The Provincial General Manager must possess excellent reporting writing, communication and public skills, good negotiating, logistic and management skills, sound knowledge of organisational policies, relevant legislative and regulatory prescripts and a professional and ethical approach to work.
