INTRODUCTION

iYunivsithi Walter Sisulu and W&RSETA, in partnership with King Sabata Dalindyebo TVET College, Lovedale TVET College, Ikhala TVET College, King Hintsa TVET College, and the Eastern Cape CET College, are establishing a Wholesale and Retail Research Leadership Chair aimed at advancing research, skills development, and innovation within the sector. 

This initiative seeks to position iYunivsithi Walter Sisulu and its strategic partners as a leading hub for industry-relevant research and capacity building, contributing to inclusive economic growth and sector competitiveness in South Africa, particularly within rural and peri-urban contexts. 

 

The key objectives of the Research Leadership Chair include: 

• Conducting internationally recognised, programmatic research in wholesale and retail 

• Establishing and strengthening public-private partnerships 

• Expanding the pipeline of skilled researchers and industry specialists 

• Producing evidence-based sector research 

• Facilitating strategic international collaborations aligned to sector needs 

 

PURPOSE

The Governance Board provides strategic oversight and ensures alignment of the Research Leadership Chair with sector priorities and governance standards.

This position is aligned to the W&RSETA Research Leadership Chair Model, which seeks to strengthen research capacity, foster collaboration across the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) system, and drive sector-relevant research that responds to the Wholesale and Retail Sector Skills Plan (SSP) priorities. 

 

Nature of Appointment 

This is a secondment-based appointment. The successful candidate must be a full-time employee of iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu, and the University is required submit a minimum of two CVs for consideration and recommendations by the W&RSETA. 

 

Purpose of the Research Leadership Chair 

The Research Leadership Chair will provide strategic and academic leadership in advancing a specialised research agenda within the wholesale and retail sector, with a strong focus on: 

• Entrepreneurship; 

• Rural and township business transformation; 

• Sector skills development and labour market responsiveness. 

 

The Chair will play a central role in building a sustainable research ecosystem that contributes to regional development in the Eastern Cape, while addressing national socio-economic priorities. 

 

 Key Responsibilities 

The appointed Chair will be responsible for: 

• Leading and implementing a programme-based research agenda aligned to SSP priorities, with a focus on entrepreneurship and rural and township economies; 

• Facilitating collaboration between iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu, TVET colleges, CET colleges, and industry stakeholders within the Eastern Cape; 

• Driving research that supports; 

• Development and sustainability of SMMEs and cooperatives 

• Growth of township and rural retail economies 

• Youth employment and entrepreneurial pathways 

• Inclusive economic participation and community development 

• Building and leading a multidisciplinary research team, including postdoctoral fellows and emerging researchers; 

• Supervising postgraduate students (Master’s and Doctoral levels) and supporting research capacity development;

CHAIR PROJECT COORDINATOR (TVET /CET) IN THE OFFICE OF THE WHOLESALE & RETAIL LEADERSHIP CHAIR: EASTERN CAPE 

 

 

The iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu, in partnership with the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA), is establishing the Wholesale & Retail Leadership Chair for the Eastern Cape. The Chair aims to strengthen research, skills development, and industry collaboration within the wholesale and retail sector, with a particular focus on entrepreneurship, transformation, and rural/township business development. 

 

Purpose of the role. 

The Chair Project Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating the implementation of the Chair’s strategic, research, and stakeholder engagement activities. The role requires strong project management, coordination, and partnership facilitation capabilities to ensure the effective delivery of the Chair’s objectives. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

• Coordinate the implementation of research, skills development, and stakeholder engagement programmes 

• Facilitate collaboration between academia, industry, and public sector partners

• Support research projects aligned to sector priorities and W&RSETA mandates

• Coordinate stakeholder engagements, workshops, and learning sessions across the Eastern Cape 

• Manage project plans, timelines, deliverables, and reporting processes 

• Support data collection activities, including surveys, interviews, and sector analysis 

• Assist in the development of knowledge outputs (reports, policy briefs, case studies, publications) 

• Maintain stakeholder databases and communication systems 

• Support governance processes, including reporting to advisory boards and management committees 

• Oversee marketing, communications, and visibility initiatives of the Chair 

 

Minimum Requirements 

• Diploma or Degree in Business Management, Project Management, Economics, Marketing, or a related field 

• Strong project coordination and organisational skills 

• Ability to manage multiple workstreams and meet deadlines 

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills 

• Proficiency in MS Office and digital collaboration tools 

• Ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team 

 

Added Advantages 

• Experience in research coordination or academic project environments 

• Understanding of the higher education and skills development landscape 

• Experience within the wholesale and retail sector 

• Knowledge of stakeholder engagement and part-nership management
