DIRECTOR: TEACHING AND LEARNING 
REFERENCE NUMBER: 2025/02/TL05 
GRADE 5 
 
The University of Zululand (UNIZULU) is seeking to appoint a highly motivated and visionary individual to join our team as the Director: Teaching and Learning (T&L) in support of the University’s strategic objectives. The Director (T&L) will be responsible for: planning, coordinating and directing the implementation of the University’s Teaching & Learning initiatives comprising: 
• academic staff development, 
• student academic development, curriculum development, 
• facilitation of academic programme accreditation, 
• the promotion of quality enhancement and assurance in T&L and 
• conducting research on T&L in institutions of higher learning. 
 
The Director will assist the DVC: Teaching & Learning with the development of the strategy, policy and budget for T&L. S/he will manage communications and relations with all relevant stakeholders and service providers. 
 
KEY ACTIVITIES 
The primary responsibilities of the Director: Teaching and Learning, are as follows: 
• Policy and Procedure Development and Review 
• Operational Planning, Budgeting and Programme Development 
• Communication and Stakeholder Interface 
• Operational Management and Coordination 
• Staff Management 
• Financial Control 
• Reporting 
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 
Qualifications:
• A Doctoral Degree in Education / Higher Education. 
 
Experience
• 8 to 10 years’ experience in a university / tertiary education environment in a senior academic supervisory or administrative role. 
• Leadership role for 5 years. 
• Proven interpersonal skills having shown the ability to obtain support from a wide spectrum of people. 
 
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES 
• In-depth knowledge of university processes associated with:  academic development, 
 student support & development, 
 learning environment enhancement, 
 enrolment enhancement, 
 curriculum development and co-curricular activities 
• Working knowledge of ITS 
• Extensive knowledge of quality assurance processes and procedures 
• Good working knowledge of project management 
• Ability to communicate and network at all levels, with internal and external stakeholders 
• High-level project management skills 
• Effective verbal and written communication 
• Facilitation and presentation skills 
• Good report writing skills 
• Self-Motivated / Initiative 
• Customer Focused – able to understand the needs of the “target audience” 
• Team Player – works collaboratively 
• Personable – able to build a cooperative response from others 
• Critical thinker
