•           Community Engagement and development of Music Education in Schools.

Minimum Requirements

•           PhD in Music/Music Education.

The Wits School of Education is seeking to appoint a suitable candidate at Lecturer/Senior Lecturer level to contribute to the School’s Initial Teacher Education and postgraduate programmes. The suitable candidate will be expected to lecture at undergraduate and postgraduate level, supervise postgraduate research, conduct research, and contribute to the advancement of Science Education as a school subject. The Senior Lecturer will be expected to teach fundamental skills required for all aspects of physical sciences and conduct research in the growing area of research in teaching and learning physical sciences in diverse classrooms, pedagogical innovations in the teaching and learning of physical sciences, education for sustainable development, teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge, and developing innovative pedagogies with technology. In addition, successful candidates will be encouraged to collaborate in areas of teachers’ content knowledge and their pedagogical skills, integration of knowledge and skills to enhance teaching and prepare pre-service teachers to fulfil their roles as a classroom teacher in the varying contexts of South African classrooms and secure research funding. The School of Architecture and Planning (SoAP) invites applications for part-time appointment at 20%-40%  FTE to play contributing roles in architectural design and/or construction studios or technical courses.  Candidates would work under one or two course coordinators, depending on the FTE percentage.  A 20% post would require teaching one course in a studio environment (either an architectural design studio or construction course), including one-on-one feedback to students, assisting with all pin-ups and exams, occasional guest lectures, and general assistance to the studio coordinator.  A 40% post would require a similar role in both an architectural design studio and a construction course or other technical course, likely within the same year of study.  In a 40% post, the candidate would also act as a co-coordinator and liaison across linked design and construction courses within the same year of study.  

The post is intended for a candidate who is doing significant work in contemporary architectural practice and is committed to transferring practice-based knowledge to students in studio environment.  Applicants must be willing to commit to a full-year timeline of teaching and related activities year after year.  The selected candidates will primarily participate in studio-based teaching, but attendance at monthly programme meetings and some commitment to academic service is expected.


Brief Description

The successful candidate should:

1.         Hold a professionally accredited M.Arch (Prof) degree, or a professionally accredited B.Arch degree and a Masters degree in any related discipline.  A PhD is an advantage but not required at Lecturer level.  

2.         Be registered as a Professional Architect with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP), or eligible for registration, and have at least 5 years of experience post-professional registration.  

3.         Have experience working in both professional practice and academic settings. 

4.         Be able to provide conceptual and detailed architectural design feedback to students, coupling it with theoretical and practical instruction, in a manner that is commensurate to the level of teaching.

5.         Demonstrate an ability to communicate conceptual design principles and application of architectural tectonics and detailing to a wide variety of projects. 

6.         Demonstrate an eagerness to engage with the School, students, and contribute to a positive and rigorous intellectual culture, perform related administrative duties, mentor early-career academics, and generally promote the programmes offered at Wits.

7.         Provide evidence of at least one, preferably more, of the following: 

a.         An understanding of passive sustainable design principles and/or alternative building technologies;

The School of Architecture & Planning (SoAP) has for over a century been home to many internationally respected academics and has produced graduates who have made outstanding contributions to the fields of architecture and planning in South Africa and around the world.  The school has an academic staff of approximately 40 people and a student body in professional and other degrees of over 600. It is one of four architectural and planning programmes in the African continent that are ranked among the top 200 programmes in the world. The University of Witwatersrand is aspiring to be among the top teaching and research-intensive universities in the world. 

 

The School of Architecture and Planning (SoAP) invites applications for a 50% FTE at Lecturer level to teach in the Planning Programme. SoAP offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in urban and regional planning and development planning, accredited by the South African Council for Town and Regional Planners (SACPLAN). The Programme also offers several fields in Urban Studies. The post is primarily to teach planning theory, comparative planning systems and basic economic/local economic development, but ability to teach in additional areas is encouraged as outlined in criteria below. As a lecturer, one is expected to conduct research, provide service to the University and wider community, undertake school administration in addition to academic teaching and supervision responsibilities as well as contributing to an environment that develops critical thinking abilities in students. 


Brief Description

1.         Be able to teach planning theory, comparative planning systems and development economics/basic economics/local economic development. Having experience in one or more of the following areas will be an advantage: municipal governance; urban management and land use planning and management.

3.         Capacity to supervise research reports at the tertiary level, preferably should have a record of research supervision at honours and masters level.

Brief Description

Applications are sought for the position of Director of the Law Clinic. The successful candidate must provide strategic leadership, manage and develop the Law Clinic and the staff, while ensuring that clinical legal education remains the main focus of the law clinic through providing legal services to the community. Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for appointment:

•           A Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) degree or MBBCh or equivalent.

•           Current professional registration with the SAPC as a pharmacist, or any relevant medical clinical specialist professional body.

•           A master’s degree (MPharm/MSc or equivalent) in Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmacology, or a related discipline, or an equivalent specialist qualification, including completion of the Fellowship of the 

            College of Clinical Pharmacologists (FCCP, FC        Clin Pharm) of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA). 

•           A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in teaching at tertiary level, including experience at Lecturer level.

•           Demonstrated experience in teaching Clinical Pharmacy/Pharmacology, specifically in the areas of: 

  • Psychiatry 
  • Neurology 
  • Special population prescribing (e.g. paediatrics, geriatrics, pregnancy, and co-morbid populations)

Academic Advising Duties

•           Student advising in one-on-one and group settings, on a variety of topics (e.g., curriculum planning, excellence skills, psychosocial matters, socioeconomic matters).

•           Referring students to appropriate interventions and/or stakeholders.

•           Creating opportunities for CLM undergraduate students to reflect on the causes of the challenges they face, or to pursue objectives and goals toward their personal success.

•           Enabling student agency by providing ongoing guidance and advice to CLM undergraduate students.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Data

•           Capturing student engagement data on the Wits Student Success Intervention Portal.

•           Developing strategies to monitor and track student progress and success in CLM.

 The WSPH wishes to recruit a Researcher with excellent health policy and systems research (HPSR) skills for the South African research component of the AFRHiCARE (Africa's First Referral Hospitals: innovation and Care) Partnership.

 The AFRHiCARE Partnership, a new Wellcome Trust Discovery Award, brings together a multidisciplinary team of lead researchers from Wits University and the universities of Oxford, Makerere in Uganda and the KEMRI-Wellcome Programme in Kenya. AFRHiCARE aims to provide thought leadership on first referral hospitals (FRH) by generating new knowledge, and promoting innovation on their roles and functions, health workforce development, technology integration, and climate adaptation with a particular focus on sub-Saharan Africa.

 The successful candidate will assume responsibility for research design, protocol development, and execution, and ensure delivery on targets according to strict deadlines. The candidate will have the opportunity to lead and/or work on multi-country research and collaborate with counterparts in Kenya, Uganda, and the United Kingdom. The candidate will also have the opportunity to supervise post-graduate students and participate in the teaching of relevant master’s courses offered by the WSPH. The person will work under the mentorship and guidance of Professor Laetitia Rispel, who is the AFRHiCARE lead in South Africa.

Qualifications and Experience

·     A health professional or public health practitioner with a PhD in the health sciences, or the social and economic sciences

·     At least 3-5 years in a public health research setting (university or science council)

·     Evidence of conceptualising, designing and/or conducting complex and large HPSR research.

·     Evidence of active research, teaching, postgraduate supervision and consistent outputs. In the case of the researcher, suitable applicants should have at least three (3) publications in accredited journals, with first authorship of at least one (1) publication.

·     Experience of research management/ administration (e.g. reporting, budgeting, financial management, etc).

·     Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic multi-disciplinary team.

·     Willingness and ability to travel

·     Good written and verbal communication skills.

 

Responsibilities

·     Provide research leadership to ensure execution of the of AFRHiCARE research project in South Africa

·     Ensure development and submission of quality research protocols for ethics approval and health authority permission.

·     Oversee research data collection at sentinel hospitals, as well as data analysis and production of narrative reports

·     Ensure execution of research and delivery of agreed upon deadlines.

·     Collaborate and engage actively with AFRHiCARE partners in Kenya, Uganda, and the United Kingdom.

·     Supervise postgraduate students (master’s and PhD) students whose research focuses on AFRHiCARE projects.

·     Undertake local and international travel to ensure delivery of AFRHiCARE targets.

·     Liaise and communicate with partners in the university, government, and community-based organisations.
