The Institutional Planning Department at the University of the Western Cape invites applications for a Business Intelligence Data Analyst position. As part of the Business intelligence Unit, the successful candidate will use business intelligence and statistical tools to conduct research and analyse institutional data. 
The role involves data analysis, report writing tailored to specific requirements, and providing actionable recommendations to enhance management information and reporting. The appointed analyst will be expected to stay informed of internal and external reporting requirements and to collaborate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
 
The successful incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Analysing and interpreting data using programming, statistical and business intelligence tools.
  • Developing predictive modelling, forecasting and optimisation models to discover trends, opportunities and risks based on the available university data.
  • Produce reports and presentations of analytics outcomes that are understandable to a diverse range of internal and external university stakeholders. 
  • Developing control structures to ensure the accuracy and quality of data through all data value chains.
  • Conducting environmental scans related to developments in national and international higher education landscape.

Minimum Requirements
  • An Honours degree or Equivalent qualification at NQF level 8 in any of the following fields: mathematics, statistics, data science, or computer science.
  • A minimum of 3 years of recent and relevant work experience in the analysis of large data sets
  • Experience using statistical software (e.g. R, Python, SPSS or SAS, etc.).
  • Experience using business intelligence and visualisation software (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI, PowerHEDA, etc.)
  • A strong background in data analysis, interpretation and presentation supported by excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organisational skills.
 
Required competencies (skills, knowledge, and behavioural attributes):
  • A high level of integrity in handling sensitive information.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, using initiative, and being flexible.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging Data analysis trends.
  • Analytical thinking and knowledge of statistical modelling and machine learning techniques.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new techniques in business intelligence and data analysis.
  • Operational planning and project management skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with different stakeholders.
 
The undermentioned will be advantageous : 
  • A Master’s degree (NQF 9 level) in either statistics, mathematics, computer science, economics, or other quantitative fields.
  • Knowledge of data management frameworks.
  • An understanding of student performance data and appropriate analytical methods.
  • Have relevant work experience in a higher education environment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the South African and international higher education sector.

As part of its promotion of the scholarship of teaching and learning, the Faculty seeks to appoint an Associate Professor OR Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education, within the School of Science and Mathematics Education.
 
Key Performance Areas
The successful incumbent will be highly motivated and willing to make a significant contribution to the development of the Faculty. He/ She will be responsible for the following key performance areas with different emphasis in each area depending on the level of appointment:
  • Facilitate learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Mathematics Education  
  • Conduct research and publish in the field of Mathematics Education  
  • Construct a coherent research agenda consistent with the broad research goals of Mathematics Education  and within the Faculty
  • Promote and support research activities in the School of Science and Mathematics Education including applications for funded research, and cooperate with the Science Learning Centre for Africa in research initiatives 
  • Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate supervision
  • Provide academic leadership
  • Curriculum development and assessment
  • Participate in community engagement and outreach activities of the SSME
  • Administration and serving on institutional committees 
  • Scholarship of engagement for societal impact
  • Serve on committees devoted to the development of SSME and faculty objectives
  • Engage in national and international networks
 
Minimum Requirements


Minimum Requirements (for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor):
  • A PhD in Mathematics Education or a related filed 
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • A strong research and academic publications record 
  • An excellent record of successful postgraduate supervision
  • Experience in curriculum development and transformation
  • Experience in leading or participating in and securing research funding for research projects
  • The integration of community engagement with learning and teaching, and research
  • Demonstrable scholarly standing and involvement at least at national level
  • Undergraduate mathematics qualification at least at the second year level would be advantageous
 
Minimum Requirements (for appointment at the rank of Senior Lecturer):
  • A relevant PhD in Mathematics Education or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • A good research and publications record (comprising relevant peer reviewed and/or accredited journal articles, books or book chapters in reputable publications)
  • A record of successful postgraduate supervision
  • Experience in curriculum development and transformation
  • The integration of community engagement with learning and teaching, and research
  • Undergraduate mathematics qualification at least at the second year level would be advantageous
 
Recommendation for Associate Professor Level (in addition to the minimum requirements)
  • A NRF rating is considered a strong recommendation

A vacancy exists in the department for a contract Lecturer to teach Statistics in the Extended Curriculum Programme. This is a contract position, but may be renewed based on continued funding. In addition to the teaching responsibilities outlined below, involvement and participation in research activities is encouraged.
 
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key areas:
  • Facilitate learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Statistics/Data Science

  • Undertake curriculum development and assessment

Minimum Requirements
  • MSc in Statistics or Data Science or Mathematical Statistics
  • Demonstrated teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, in the field of Statistics or Data Science
  • Proven expertise in applying complex statistical and data science techniques in statistical packages such as SAS, R and/or Python
 
Advantageous criteria:
  • Currently registered for a PhD in Statistics or Data Science or Mathematical Statistics
  • A record of successful postgraduate supervision at the honours level
  • A record of quality peer reviewed publications, in the field of Statistics, Applied Statistics or Data Science or proof of peer reviewed technical reports submitted in industry.
