The Department of Social Work in the CHS faculty, is committed to excellence in Community Development and Social Work Education, Practice and Research. We believe in justice, gender equity, human diversity and citizenship for all.  Currently, the following five Social Service Practitioner (SSP) occupations exist as a result from the review of the Social Service Professions Act 110 of 1978 as amended in 1998, and subsequent amendments, which transformed the social services sector, to be more inclusive of a broader range of social service practitioners (SSPs):  Social Workers, Community Development Practitioners, Child and Youth Care Workers, Early Childhood Development Practitioners, and Caregivers. 
The Department of Social Work has added the Community Development 4-year Bachelor degree to its SSP offerings in 2021. The programme will prepare Community Development professionals for distinguished practice to facilitate collective processes in communities to effect psycho, social and economic development, through empowerment to enhance the capacity of people as active citizens through communities, organisations and networks. Appropriately qualified and experienced lecturers are thus set as a key priority. 
The Department is actively seeking candidates to fill a Community Development Senior Lecturer position. The successful candidate will be expected to join the programme on 1 December 2025. 
 
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:
•    Facilitate learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the Department of Social Work.
•    Conduct research and publish in the field of Community Development.
•    Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate supervision.
•    Supervision of research projects.
•    Participation in research programmes, curriculum development and staff development.
•    Engaging in community-related activities.
•    Responsible for administrative duties within the department/unit, faculty and the university.
 
Minimum Requirements
•    A PhD in in a related discipline with emphasis on Community Development. 
•    Knowledge and experience in at least three of the following fields: 
        o    Community Development Theories; 
        o    Frameworks, Approaches and Processes of Community Development; 
        o    Institutions in Community Development (e.g., local government, CBOs, NGOs); 
        o    Community Development practice, with a focus on the South African context and legal framework; and 
        o    Community Development research 
•    Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning, preferably in the field of community development. 
•    At least five years’ experience in practice. 
•    Evidence of a publication record in the discipline. 
•    Evidence of the integration of community engagement and learning and teaching/research. 
•    Experienced with postgraduate supervision.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences hosts nine academic departments, a School of Pharmacy and several world-class research institutes and centres.  Based on a foundation of internationally-recognised quality research, the faculty is committed to learning and teaching excellence and offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the major scientific disciplines as well as a professional degree in Pharmacy. 
The School of Pharmacy at the University of the Western Cape has a strong focus on patient and service orientated education, building on a sound scientific base and active research. The School intends to appoint an experienced Academic Pharmacists or Clinical Pharmacologists to complement and enhance both teaching and research expertise in pharmacology and clinical pharmacy. The start date for this position will be January 1, 2026.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas:
  • Facilitate learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels on campus and in clinical settings
  • Conduct research and publish in appropriate high impact journals
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate supervision
  • Curriculum development, assessment and the continuous improvement of the academic programme
  • Community engagement and outreach
  • Manage academic administration
 
Minimum Requirements
  • A BPharm, MBChB or related degree AND a PhD (Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmacology or Clinical Pharmacology), or a PharmD
  • Registration with the appropriate Professional Council (SAPC or HPCSA) to practice in South Africa
  • Teaching and practice experience with a student centred and innovative approach towards teaching and learning
  • A record of relevant high quality accredited publications and experience of postgraduate research supervision.
 
Required competencies:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Teaching, training and mentoring skills in an academic and clinical environment
  • Engaging and developing undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Planning and organising skills
  • Time and project management skills.

  • A track record of developing research projects and securing funding would be an advantage;
  • Collaborative partnerships with academic institutions, government departments, community health and/or research organisations;
  • Active working experience as a pharmacist in a clinical environment.

The Department of Biotechnology hosted within the Faculty of Natural Sciences is a leading teaching and research department at the University of the Western Cape and delivers structured courses across the underlying disciplines of Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics and Plant Biotechnology. The Department offers an under-graduate Biotechnology Programme, an Honours BSc, an MSc Biotechnology and a PhD Biotechnology.
 
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas:
  • Teaching duties that will include organising and teaching of practical sessions for undergraduate courses;
  • Managing procurement processes by liaising with suppliers and coordinating the purchase of equipment, chemicals and consumables required for practical laboratories;
  • Managing of technical support staff performance and development;
  • Conducting research and supporting research activities, including managing and maintaining shared equipment and facilities to ensure their effective operation and equitable access;
  • Assisting and supporting departmental administrative responsibilities;
  • Maintaining health and safety standards in laboratory and teaching environments.
 
Minimum Requirements
  • An MSc degree in Biotechnology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology or related field;
  • At least two years’ experience in laboratory practices, including scientific equipment management and maintenance;
  • Experience in student administrative systems in the higher education sector.
 
Required competencies:
  • Technical knowledge and experience in training and supervising students in an academic setting;
  • Strong organisational, interpersonal, and communication skills (both written and verbal);
  • A student-centred approach with a commitment to mentoring and development;
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict deadlines;
  • Experience in administrative systems relevant to the higher education sector;
  • Experience in implementing health and safety protocols in laboratory and teaching environments
 
Added advantage and preferences:
  • Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting research instruments;
  • Involvement in staff development or mentorship initiatives;
  • Contribution to strategic planning or departmental management processes;
  • A record of participating in science outreach activities
