The CISCFS is UWC’s interdisciplinary hub advancing the science and practice of family wellbeing. The CISCFS offers a Postgraduate Diploma, a Masters by full-thesis and a PhD, all in Child and Family Studies, drawing from multiple disciplines (social work, psychology, law, education) with approximately 100 students across programmes. Our graduate success is evidenced in 100+ Masters graduates since 2008, 25 PhD graduates since 2016, demonstrating consistent throughput. The staff in the CISCFS have partnerships locally, nationally and internationally.
 
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:
•    Learning and Teaching: Facilitate learning and teaching at postgraduate levels in the CISCFS; undertake curriculum development, innovation and assessment; contribute to cross-faculty teaching; design short courses/professional training in family research and practice.
•    Research leadership: Set the research intention for CISCFS; conduct research and publish in the field of family studies; provide mentorship and guidance in the delivery of research methods in families in diverse contexts; responsible for securing funding or third-stream income; build winning proposals; run the projects on time, on budget, to spec; Supervise Honours/Master’s/PhD to completion; mentor postdocs and early-career academics.
•    Community Engagement: Undertake community engagement and outreach.
•    Centre leadership and stewardship: Strategic planning, people management, budgets, compliance, M&E, and reporting.
•    Stakeholder & policy engagement: Translate evidence into action: policy briefs, roundtables, implementation guidance, media.
•    Knowledge translation: Open science practices, data governance, and impactful dissemination.
 
Minimum Requirements
•    PhD in Family Studies/Child & Family Studies, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Public Health, or closely related field.
•    Demonstrable expertise in the study of the family or aspects of the family.
•    Track record of quality peer-reviewed publications in family research.
•    Successful postgraduate supervision to completion.
•    Grant success (PI/Co-I on externally funded projects).
•    5+ years in a higher education institution or research institute
•    Evidence of national standing and emerging international networks.
•    Evidence of community engagement.

The IRO has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual who will be reporting to the Director: International Relations. The Coordinator: International Relations supports the efforts of UWC’s Internationalisation Project by providing integrated coordination and administration related to the Internationalisation Project.  
 
The key performance areas of the incumbent include the following: 
  • External/internal liaison in line with providing an excellent client service.

The SANORD Central Office (SCO) is based at UWC. 
The role of the Coordinator provides administrative and scholarly support to the Director: SANORD and the office. The Coordinator will assist with the effective flow of tasks within SANORD Office to provide professional advanced support and deliver a seamless and integrated service to the SANORD membership.
 
The successful incumbent will be responsible for: 
  • Coordinate and implement the operations of the SANORD Central Office (SCO) 
  • Develop strategic plans and a business framework for SANORD operations
  • Coordinate and implement SANORD’s information activities and on-going communication including the web portal and the newsletter, as well as contact between the SCO, the member institutions and the board.

The UWC’s Information and Communication Services (ICS) Department play a pivotal role in delivering ICT services that enable and support the University’s strategic goals and objectives. ICS, in line with growing its capability and supporting the Digital Transformation Strategy of UWC, offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced HR Support Administrator in the ICS Applications Development and Support unit.
To be part of a team responsible for the analysis, design, build, test, deployment and customisation of bespoke as well commercial applications. The incumbent will further be responsible for providing maintenance and support in respect of these applications.
 
The key role and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
  • Participate in Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) phases especially solution design, development, testing, deployment and maintenance of applications and solutions
  • Design, develop, maintain, and support existing and new applications and solutions based on business requirements.
  • Ensure that solutions and enhancements comply with guidelines and best practices.
  • Provide technical leadership while responsible for development and implementation of standards to deliver high quality software.

Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas
The University of the Western Cape (UWC)’s Technology Transfer Office (TTO) sits within the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation portfolio. Key functions of the TTO are to (1) raise awareness of the national legislation on Intellectual Property (IP), UWC Research and IP Policy, and the value of protecting IP (2) manage IP disclosures and protection (3) support and facilitate the protection and commercialisation of UWC’s IP and (4) promote a culture of innovation.
The UWC TTO is looking for an individual to join our team who has the appropriate knowledge, skills, competencies and passion for commercialisation of UWC’s Intellectual Property and Innovations and is keen to be involved in the various aspects and processes of getting university-based research outputs to social and/or economic markets.
Reporting to the TTO Manager, the role of the Technology Transfer Specialist: Investment & Commercialisation involves developing strong relationships with UWC’s researchers, as well as with industrial, commercial and other innovation partners, in order to identify, develop, market and transfer UWC’s intellectual property into use in society.
 
The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following key areas:
  • Engaging with UWC researchers to identify innovative technologies/solutions
  • Undertaking IP & Innovation Evaluation to assess the potential of these innovations
  • Developing and implementing commercialisation and/or innovation development strategies for these innovations and guiding TT Project managers when necessary
  • Assisting UWC researchers with innovation funding applications or business plans for innovation development and sourcing investment
  • Identifying and managing partnerships with commercialisation partners and relevant stakeholders for specific commercialisation opportunities
  • Managing technology transfer projects from proof of concept through to commercialisation.
  • Managing of innovation funding programmes (e.g. Seed Funding)
  • Promoting and representing the UWC’s technology transfer function to internal and external stakeholders, including training and awareness events
  • Providing general support with TTO operations and activities as well as specific TTO-led initiatives. 
 
Minimum Requirements


Minimum Requirements:(Qualification & Experience) 
  • Postgraduate degree or equivalent qualification at NQF8 in a relevant Science, Engineering, Technology or Business discipline 
  • 5-7 years of experience in a Research Institution Technology Transfer or Innovation environment, preferably in research commercialization or business development or technology entrepreneurship
  • 3 years of the 5 years’ experience should include project management and new product/innovation/business development/technology entrepreneurship
  • 2 years of the 5 years should include   postgraduate research or other relevant work experience
 
Added Advantage:
  • Masters degree or equivalent qualification at NQF9 in a relevant Science, Engineering, Technology or Business discipline
  • A recognised business/finance qualification(s)
  • 5 years of experience in Technology Transfer or Innovation environment, preferably in research commercialization or business development
  • 5 years of experience in project management and new product/innovation/business development
  • 3 years of experience in business/finance
 
Required competencies: (skills, knowledge, and behavioural attributes)
  • Sound knowledge of research-related agreements managed by universities
  • Sound knowledge of university research environment, including relevant legislation and policies
  • Knowledge of sponsored research contract administration 
  • Managerial and project management skills
  • Excellent communication skills in English – written and verbal
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a customer-focused service environment
