The UWC’s Information and Communication Services (ICS) Department play a pivotal role in delivering ICT services that enable and support the University’s strategic goals and objectives. ICS, in line with growing its capability and supporting the Digital Transformation Strategy of UWC, offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced .Net Developer in the ICS Applications Development and Support unit.
To be part of a team responsible for the analysis, design, build, test, deployment and customisation of bespoke as well commercial applications. The incumbent will further be responsible for providing maintenance and support in respect of these applications.
The key role and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
- Participate in Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) phases especially solution design, development, testing, deployment and maintenance of applications and solutions
- Design, develop, maintain, and support existing and new applications and solutions based on business requirements,
- Ensure that solutions and enhancements comply with guidelines and best practices,
- Provide technical leadership while responsible for development and implementation of standards to deliver high quality software,
- Training and mentorship of junior developers where applicable,
- Authoring of written documentation to support developed solutions,
- Work in collaboration with the various ICS units, particularly the ICS Project Management Office, Infrastructure & Operations team and Application Development teams, towards the successful delivery of various projects,
- Estimate the efforts involved for development and implementation and prepare Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) as required,
- Provide 2nd and 3rd line incident resolution,
- Identify, report and manage issues and risks to applications and solutions,
- Review and report on performance, stability, and health of applications and solutions,
- Identify new and emerging technologies and products based on own area of expertise,
- Development of personal skill set in-line with industry trends to meet institution’s objectives.
Minimum Requirements
• 3-Year Degree or Advance Diploma in Information Systems.
Minimum Working Experience:
- 5 Years’ experience as a Software Developer dealing with Microsoft technologies specifically .Net.
- Demonstrable experience within a structured software development environment.
Minimum Technical Experience:
- Proven ability to lead a small development team,
- Ability to multitask and be involved in several different concurrent activities,
- Understanding of SOLID Object-Oriented Design Principles,
- Experience with back-end and front-end development with Microsoft .NET Framework,
- Developing ASP.NET MVC web applications using C#, .Net Framework and/or .Net Core, AJAX, Angular, JavaScript, CSS and BootStrap,
- Experience with SOAP/REST API and Web Services,
- Solid experience with SQL queries, stored procedures, and views on Sql Server and Oracle PL/SQL,
- Experience using Azure Devops CI/CD methodologies,
- Understanding of unit, integration, regression and system testing,
- Good verbal and written communication skills,
- Familiarity with the software development life cycle (SDLC),
- Understanding of Waterfall, Agile and DevOps CI/CD development methodologies,
- Knowledgeable and passionate for all things digital,
- Sql Server Integration Services (SSIS),
- Power BI Reporting,
- Data modelling and cataloguing,
- Cloud technologies.

The Information & Communication Services (ICS) Department at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) delivers a broad range of best practice Information & Communication Technology services to one of South Africa’s most dynamic universities. The ICS department has identified a growth area within the IT Operations and Services unit that focus on delivering services aligned to the University Digital Transformation strategy and as part of the Institutional Operating Plan (IOP). In order to deliver on the Department’s strategic initiatives, an opportunity exists for a suitably qualified candidate: Systems Administrator: IT Operations.
The Key Responsibilities of the incumbent include but are not limited to:
- Responsible for production and daily operations support,
- Evaluate all aspects of server performance relating to systems utilisation, availability and reliability,
- Ensure data recovery, maintenance, data integrity and space requirements are met across a variety of platforms,
- Ensure performance, reliability and availability of platforms in datacentre to meet business objectives,
- Maintain service level agreements,
- Maintain security of IT infrastructure,
- Maintain infrastructure documentation, standard operating procedures and inventory of datacentre,
- Provide input and recommendations regarding business continuance issues and improvements to the operations of systems and processes supported,
- Setup and use monitoring and diagnostics tools effectively to troubleshoot issues on systems,
- Experiential exposure to datacentre best practice frameworks, change control, opensource technologies including ITIL processes,
- Contribute to development of procedures and processes for enterprise Datacentre operations,
- Contribute to developing technology standards and best practices for the Datacentre Infrastructure,
- Analyse technologies and market trends, determining potential impact upon the enterprise and recommend solutions to address risks,
- Work closely with the network infrastructure team, application support team, departments and other stakeholders.
Minimum Requirements
Minimum education and experience required:
- A B-degree in Computer Science or Information Technology, National Diploma in IT related fields is advantageous but not essential,
- Or relevant accredited (industry-recognised) professional certifications (e.g. MCSE) with demonstrated five years’ experience in a datacentre environment at a large organisation or educational institution.
Minimum competencies required:
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills,
- Ability to work across interdisciplinary teams,
- Ability to analyse and resolve problems swiftly using a range of diagnostic tools and techniques,
- Ability to adapt to new technologies, best practice frameworks in the datacentre environment,
- Understanding of the cyberthreat landscape and ability to mitigate these threats,
- Ability to create and maintain technical documentation, policies and processes as related to the datacentre infrastructure environment.

The ICS department has identified a growth area within the IT Operations and Services unit that focus on delivering cybersecurity services aligned to the University Digital Transformation strategy and as part of the Institutional Operating Plan (IOP). In order to deliver on the Department’s strategic initiatives, an opportunity exists for a suitably experienced candidate in the post: Specialist: Cybersecurity Operations.
The Key Responsibilities of the incumbent include but are not limited to:
The University of Western Cape has a host of critical information systems that require continual vigilance and action to maintain its credible cybersecurity posture,
- Responsible for daily cybersecurity operations support over a range of cybersecurity platforms in place at UWC,
- Proven experience with analysis and remediation of incidents and events on the cybersecurity infrastructure,
- Proven experience with a host of security tools performing deployment, configuration, fine tuning, and maintaining a secure IT infrastructure and applications environment,
- Proven experience in the establishment and deployment of security baselines for hardware and software. (e.g. server, appliances, operating systems),
- Proven experience in preparing relevant reports, dashboards and documentation pertaining to the cybersecurity environment,
- Responsible for maintaining patch, security and vulnerability remediations across IT infrastructure and application platforms including managing data recovery in the unlikely event of data breaches,
- Responsible for the management of firewall, antimalware, IDM, SIEM, PAM, and AI/ ML intelligent threat platforms,
- Provide input and recommendations regarding business continuance issues and improvements to the operations of systems and its supported processes,
- Setup and use monitoring and diagnostics tools effectively to troubleshoot issues on systems,
- Experiential exposure to datacentre best practice frameworks, change control, opensource technologies including ITIL processes,
- Contribute to developing cybersecurity standards and best practices for the Datacentre Infrastructure,
- Analyse technologies and market trends, determining potential impact upon the enterprise and recommend solutions to address risks posed by cyberthreats,
- Work closely with the network infrastructure team, application support team, ICS units, faculties, departments and other stakeholders.
Minimum education and experience required:
- A NQF7 (or higher) level qualification with three (3) years demonstrated experience and relevant accredited (industry recognised) professional certification in a datacentre cybersecurity related field.
- Or Matric certificate plus Five (5) years demonstrated experience and relevant accredited (industry recognised) professional certification in a datacentre cybersecurity related field.
- Demonstrated experience in NGFW and EPP or EDR and specialised threat analysis and protection systems. e.g. Darktrace.
- The ideal candidate must be proficient in PAM, SIEM, Identity Access Management, Vulnerability Threat Management, Mitigation and Analysis using Threat Intelligence Platforms.
