The post requires the incumbent to develop, grow and drive Nursing related initiatives at UWC that are nationally and internationally recognised. The School of Nursing is the largest School in the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences with over 1100 undergraduate and around 150 post graduate students. The School offers the following SANC accredited programmes: Bachelor of Nursing undergraduate programme, 3 Postgraduate Diplomas (Nursing Education, Health Services Management and Midwifery, a research masters and PhD programmes. The School consist of five divisions, namely, Academic Programs, Clinical and Community Engagement, Research, Academic Planning and Administration.
 
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:
• Facilitate learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the School of Nursing.
• Conduct research and publish in the field of nursing or health related matters.
• Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate supervision.
• Undertake curriculum development and assessment.
• Undertake community engagement and outreach.
• Provide academic leadership and administration.
• Manage a Division in the School.
• Responsible for securing funding or third-stream income.
 
Minimum Requirements


At the level of Professor
• PhD or equivalent, preferably in the field of Nursing.
• Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching, preferably in the field of nursing or health related matters.
• A track record of quality peer reviewed publications, preferably in the field of nursing or health related matters.
• A track record of successful postgraduate supervision.
• Evidence of expertise, national standing, and definite international presence in his/her discipline.
• Experience in generating research grants.
• More than five (5) years’ experience in a higher education institution and evidence of leadership experience.
• Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse / Midwife / Community Health Nurse / Psychiatric Nurse.
• Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Nursing Educator.
 
At the level of Associate Professor
• PHD or equivalent, preferably in the field of Nursing.
• Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning, preferably in the field of nursing or health related matters.
• A track record of quality peer reviewed publications, preferably in the field of nursing or health related matters.
• A record of successful postgraduate supervision.
• Evidence of expertise, national standing, and where appropriate, an international presence in his/her discipline.
• At least five (5) years’ experience in a higher education institution.
• Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse / Midwife / Community Health Nurse / Psychiatric Nurse.
• Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Nursing Educator.
 
Added advantage
• NRF rating.
• Registration with the South African Nursing Council as an Advanced Mental Health Nurse or Advanced Midwife and /or
Health Services Manager or Primary Care Nurse.

Please note that this position is part of the Joint Establishment, which refers to a formal collaborative agreement between the University and the Provincial Health Department. 
The appointed individual will be expected to engage in both academic responsibilities and service delivery, as per the collaborative agreement with the Provincial Health Department. This includes contributing to the clinical service delivery component, in line with the requirements of the service delivery model.

The Faculty of Dentistry is a world-class Oral Health Centre committed to the promotion of oral health through excellence of its Teaching & Learning, service rendering and research. The Faculty seeks professionally qualified candidates with excellent records for a post on the joint establishment of the University of the Western Cape and the Provincial Administration of the Western Cape, on the conditions of service of the University of the Western Cape.
 
Responsibilities will include:
  • Rendering a maxillofacial and oral surgery service on the combined platform i.e. Tygerberg and Mitchells Plain Oral Health Centres, Groote Schuur-,  Tygerberg- and Red Cross Academic Hospitals and secondary hospitals where indicated. (normal working hours and overtime duties as per departmental roster),
  • Teaching and training on the combined platform, i.e. appropriate training, supervision and general teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students,
  • Conduct, assist and stimulate research,
  • Control and management of clinical services as delegated by the Head of Department,
  • Maintain satisfactory clinical, professional and ethical standards related to these services,
  • Maintain necessary discipline over staff under his/her control,
  • Attend to administrative matters as pertains to the academic unit,
  • Promote community-orientated services.
 
The following would enhance an application:
  • Experience in cranio-maxillofacial trauma,
  • Experience in maxillofacial and neck sepsis,
  • Experience in managing difficult airways and tracheostomies,
  • Experience in tumour resection, extra-oral approaches for reconstruction and fibula free flap reconstructions,
  • Experience in teaching and training undergraduate and postgraduate students,
  • PhD in a relevant field would be preferred in respect of the Academic ranking of this post, but is not prerequisite,
  • Research experience,
  • Ability to work in a team,

Minimum Requirements


Appointment to this position requires the following criteria:
  • A MChD (MFOS) or FCMFOS-SA or equivalent qualification; 
  • Valid registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a ‘Specialist Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgeon’ on date of appointment  is a prerequisite;
  • Demonstrated experience and academic leadership in teaching and learning, research, supervision, and administration, in order to contribute to the Faculty’s academic objectives;
  • Experience in supervision of Masters students;
  • Research and publications record.

• Meets the requirements to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Specialist in Prosthodontics,
• A broad understanding in all aspects of the specialty, and an excellent research and publications record, 
• Previous undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience. 
The level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
 
Minimum Requirements for Appointment as Senior Lecturer
• Aforementioned minimum requirements plus;
• Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning, research, supervision and administration, in order to contribute to the Department’s academic objectives,
• Research and publications record, 
• Expertise in any of the sub specialty in the field of Prosthodontics.
 
Minimum Requirements for Appointment as Associate Professor/Head Clinical Unit
• Aforementioned minimum requirements plus; 
• PhD in the relevant field would be preferred in respect of Academic ranking of this post, but is not a prerequisite,

  • PhD or *equivalent or master’s degree with an acceptable publication record, preferably in the field of Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery or superspeciality in niche area of interest eg. Cleft Lip and Palate, TMJ surgery, Oncology Surgery etc. 
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching, preferably in the field of Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery, 
  • Valid registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Specialist in Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery with a minimum of 7 years’ experience after registration as a maxillofacial and oral surgical specialist,
  • A broad understanding in all aspects of the specialty,
  • A record of peer reviewed publications, preferably in the field of Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery,
  • A record of postgraduate student teaching, learning, training and research involvement,
  • The integration of community engagement with learning and teaching and/or research,
  • Evidence of expertise and national standing in his/her discipline.
