The Department is dedicated to educating and training graduates who can think critically and creatively, solve problems, and who are adaptable to change. The focus is on developing historians, museologists, heritage and cultural tourism specialists, entrepreneurs, and various other professionals through theoretical understanding and experiential learning techniques. In pursuing knowledge creation and distribution, staff members engage with several academic, community, industry, and government partners to ensure that students are exposed to relevant information. Working individually and in teams, staff are involved in research on various topics within their fields of interest, and are also encouraged to work in a transdisciplinary way.
POSITION
The University seeks to appoint an Associate Professor/Professor and Head of Department. The Head of Department appointment will be additional to the successful candidate’s academic appointment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
- The strategic, academic and operational management of the Department, with particular emphasis on developing synergy between the different fields of inquiry pursued by staff members;
- Undergraduate teaching and postgraduate teaching and supervision;
- Fostering a dynamic internal research culture and enhancing the external profile and impact of the Department’s research;
- Engaging with relevant stakeholder communities – this includes sustaining and developing partnerships with stakeholder institutions nationally and globally;
- Playing an active role as an academic leader at both the national and international levels;
- Demonstrating strong leadership skills as well as excellent interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills.
- Fundraising for departmental activities (e.g., research projects, postgraduate student support).
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- A Doctorate in History or Heritage and Cultural Tourism or a related discipline
- A sustained record of research excellence, with publications in both national and international journals and/or publishing houses, appropriate to the post level
- A proven postgraduate supervision commitment and track record, appropriate to the post level
- A track record of, and commitment to, excellence in teaching and learning
- An appropriate vision for enhancing the Department’s standing and diverse profile, both nationally and internationally
- Strong academic administration experience
- A commitment to preserve and expand the profile and impact of the Department’s existing offerings in both History and Heritage and Cultural Tourism;
- The candidate must possess the requisite qualifications and experience to be eligible for appointment as Associate Professor or Professor in the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies at the University of Pretoria. The assessment of these qualifications and experience occurs along several dimensions, including teaching, research and postgraduate supervision, community engagement, academic administration and academic citizenship, as well as proven leadership skills.

- Academic leadership in the relevant disciplines
- Experience of high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional boards

The incumbent will be responsible for:
- Conducting advanced research in any facet of Public Economics, Tax Policy, Tax and Development, Tax Governance and Administration, in a developing-country context;
- Publishing research in local and international accredited journals;
- Supervising postgraduate students on research topics in fields of Public Economics, Tax Policy, Tax and Development, Tax Governance and Administration; and
- Teaching postgraduate programmes in Public Economics, Tax Policy, Tax and Development, Tax Governance and Administration.

The strength of the Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology (GGM) lies in the multi-disciplinary nature of its research and education. Geography seeks to understand the natural and human complexities of the Earth, which are often closely related to the built environment. Research and education in the department therefore lies at the interface of the natural and social sciences, but also draws on principles from engineering and information technology in the application of geoinformatics and remote sensing.
Most of the work in the department is directly related to one or more of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Examples include the undergraduate module in sustainable development; the development of standards for measuring and reporting SDG indicators; research and community engagement towards achieving sustainable cities and protecting biodiversity. Due to their geographical nature, research and education in the department are always directly related to a specific location on the Earth, very often in proximity to the university, country, continent or hemisphere. The work therefore has local impact but is also internationally relevant.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
- The strategic, academic and operational management of the Department;
- Promoting the Department’s research profile;
- Ensuring scholarly academic and professional education and training;
- Playing an active role as academic leader of the discipline at national and international levels;
- Fundraising for departmental activities;
- Actively driving transformation; and
- Strategically developing and marketing the department to increase its African and international standing.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A relevant doctorate, with at least 10 years’ relevant experience;
- Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional associations;
- Academic status and at least national recognition in the relevant discipline for appointment at Associate Professor level, but both national and international recognition in the relevant discipline for appointment at Professor level;
- A proven research and publication record and peer recognition;
- An appropriate vision for the Department to ensure it remains a leading department in Africa;
- A proven track record of successful masters and doctoral student supervision;
- A good track record of international research collaboration and successful acquisition of external research grants; and
- A proven record of curriculum development and recognised teaching and learning excellence at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The post is targeted at a veterinarian who wishes to become a clinical specialist in Clinical Pathology by completing a MMedVet-degree. RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:
- An advanced training programme in Clinical Pathology with the view of obtaining the MMedVet (Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics) degree with speciality in Clinical Pathology;
- Didactic teaching and practical training of undergraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students;
- Participate in Departmental research and publications;
- Participate in providing a clinical service in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital and surrounding community, including a 24-hour service; and
- Perform community engagement activities.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- BVSc-degree or BVMCh or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
- Registration with the SAVC or eligibility for registration within one year of appointment; and
- Two years’ veterinary clinical experience completed upon commencement of appointment or one-year rotating clinical internship in small- or large animal medicine and surgery. The CCS year may be considered as a year of clinical experience provided that evidence, such as a case log, can be provided to this effect.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

- Subject knowledge: Clinical Pathology;
