RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Lecture at undergraduate and postgraduate level on the Hatfield, Groenkloof and / or Mamelodi Campuses;
  • Provide academic leadership as a teacher, researcher and manager;
  • Conduct research in at least one of the departmental research focus areas (including Mathematics of Finance) and / or initiate a new research direction that led to publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals;
  • Supervise postgraduate students;
  • Establish international partnerships and linkages;
  • Be responsible for fundraising relating to academic research;
  • Participate in departmental administration and managerial work;
  • Participate in community engagement.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A PhD degree in Mathematics and / or Applied Mathematics;
  • Experience as an independent researcher at an international level, based on a recent body of quality work within the field that attests to on-going engagement;
  • Excellent teaching experience in learning facilitation, subject mastery, curriculum development, development of learning materials and assessment techniques;
  • Proven experience in supervising Master’s or PhD students to completion.

The Pathology Laboratory within the Department of Paraclinical Science is seeking the services of a Histotechnologist who is registered with the SAVC as a Veterinary Technologist. The level of appointment will depend on the candidate’s knowledge and experience. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
These duties and functions include, but not limited to:
  • Responsible for the daily routine work in the Histopathology Laboratory in order to achieve efficient and cost-effective service;
  • Maintenance of all equipment;
  • Ensure processing, embedding and cutting of samples received from various laboratories;
  • Reagent preparation and staining for both the Histopathology and the Immunohistochemistry laboratories;
  • Ensure that all laboratory system protocols, e.g., safety and quality details are adhered to;
  • Trouble shooting and reporting all malfunctions, non-conformances and incidents;
  • Maintain and manage quality assurance; and
  • Administrative duties linked to the post.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Post level 9: First Veterinary technologist
  • National Diploma in Veterinary Technology;
  • Three years’ experience performing Histotechniques (Microtomy, tissue processing and HistoStains);
  • Registration with South African Veterinary Council; 
  • Advanced knowledge of Histotechniques;
  • Competent in techniques practiced in a histopathology laboratory; and
  • Advanced knowledge of ISO17025.
Post level 10: Senior Veterinary Technologist

LECTURER:
  • Master’s degree in Education Law, Management and Policy Studies (with a special focus in Education Leadership and Management);
  • 1-3 years teaching experience in Higher Education, for example, being a demonstrator or tutor or lecturer;
  • Evidence of some research experience;
  • Evidence of some experience in a community project;
  • Evidence of some admin or managerial skills or leadership and commitment to ongoing professional development.
 
SENIOR LECTURER:
  • PhD in the field of Education Management and Policy Studies;
  • At least three (3) years of tertiary or related teaching experience (for example, being a demonstrator or tutor or lecturer);
  • At least six (6) accredited publications (journals, book chapters, Books) of which 4 should be in a mix of internationally and nationally accredited journals, 1 publication should be sole-authored and evidence of conference papers;
  • At least 3 students supervised to completion at Masters level;
  • Evidence of Community engagement in a related field. Work-integrated involvement/ mentorship;
  • Experience in academic administration and participation in departmental/faculty committees.
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Knowledge of the theories of Education Management and Policy Studies;

The Department of Production Animal Studies seeks an experienced veterinarian to join our dynamic team tasked with enhancing animal production and welfare, ruminant health, community and environmental health. 
The successful candidate will focus on the teaching and research in fields related to the Poultry Health and Production on either a full time or part time basis. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:
  • Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in flock health and production; The successful candidate will be expected to actively recruit additional clientele to fulfil this mandate;
  • Clinical and flock health services around surrounding communities including providing expert services for various poultry operations.
  • Postgraduate training including recruitment of PG students and supervision thereof;
  • Research and publication in scientific journals;
  • Networking with relevant industry stakeholders;
  • Community engagement – participation and supporting student activities;
  • Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department; and
  • Academic self-development.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Lecturer:
Senior Lecturer:
  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • An appropriate MMedVet-degree and/or equivalent specialty board certification in Poultry Health (e.g. MMedVet Aves);
  • Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a Poultry Health Specialist;
  • Over Five years of veterinary clinical experience with at least two years’ experience in Poultry industry; and
  • At least one full peer reviewed paper in an accredited scientific journal as senior or co-author.
Or
  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • Registration with the SAVC as a Veterinarian;
  • MSc degree with particular focus on Poultry aspects;
  • Over Seven years of veterinary clinical experience with at least Five years’ experience in predominantly Poultry industry post acquiring a Master’s degree; and
  • At least five research-based full papers in an accredited scientific journal as senior author and/or co-author. 
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Proven knowledge and competence in veterinary clinical work;
  • Skills in herd or population level problem investigation, management interventions and consultation;
  • Research interest appropriate to the position;
  • Candidates without a post graduate degree: Commitment to obtain it in reasonable time;
  • Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills; and 
  • Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word-processing and spreadsheet software.

  • Supervise postgraduate research, appropriate to the post level;
  • Conduct research commensurate with the level of appointment and actively contribute to the Department’s research profile;

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • A Doctoral qualification with specialization in isiNdebele;
  • Teaching experience at a tertiary institution;
  • Evidence of successful postgraduate supervision;
  • Evidence of research productivity (e.g., conference presentations and publications in peer-reviewed journals);
  • Academic administration experience.
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES)
  • Ability to teach first-language / home-language speakers of isiNdebele;
  • Clear and demonstrable research focus related to the primary responsibilities of the post.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating and providing academic support to undergraduate and honours students, facilitating the scholarship application and selection processes, and ensuring a supportive environment that promotes student success and academic excellence.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Academic Support
  • Provide academic support and advising to students on scholarships.
  • Assist students with course selection, academic planning, and research opportunities.
  • Collaborate with faculty academic advisors and faculty mentors, and monitor academic progress and performance of students on scholarships.
  • Student Support
  • Collaborate with the Program team to organise workshops, information-sharing sessions, and outreach activities to promote and ensure an environment that enables scholars to succeed and complete their studies within minimum time.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for undergraduate and Honours students seeking information and assistance regarding scholarship.
  • Support activities related to Scholar Representatives and assist in facilitating programmes.
  • Liaise with the Program Psychologist, Entrepreneurship/Community Engagement Coordinator, Program Manager for appropriate support for the Scholars.
  • Data Management and reporting
  • Maintain accurate records and data of students’ interactions, academic progress using the Anthology Reach, and generate regular reports
  • Recommend interventions needed for improvement based on Scholars’ progress.
  • Recruitment and Application Process Coordination
  • Participate in the recruitment process and promotion of the scholarship though building relationships with high schools and relevant stakeholders.
  • Coordinate the application process for the scholarship with the Senior Recruitment and Liaison Officer and the Program team.
  • Ensure that the recruitment for prospective students is accessible to and inclusive of a targeted student profile (females, refugees, Internally Displaced Persons, and youth with disabilities.)
  • Selection and On-boarding
  • Engage professionally with Scholars’ concerns in a supportive, caring, fair and transparent manner.
  • Collaborate with Program team to identify prospective students, organise selection committees, coordinate review meetings, and ensure adherence to selection criteria.
  • Participate in the planning, onboarding and orientations of new Scholars, and provide assistance with adhoc requests by the Senior Manager and Program Manager.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Education, Counselling, Student Affairs) with at least five years of work experience in the following:
  • Academic Support
  • Student Support
  • Data Management and reporting
  • Recruitment and Application Process Coordination
  • Selection and On-boarding
 
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Advanced in Computer literacy;
  • General knowledge of all functions and processes regarding undergraduate and postgraduate Scholars;
  • In depth knowledge of all functions and process regarding international students;
  • Knowledge of degree courses presented at UP;
  • Knowledge of administrative processes for registered students, undergraduates and postgraduates;
  • Knowledge of processes relating to graduation certificates and academic records;
  • Knowledge of Immigration Act and consequences;
  • Building relationships with embassies in South Africa and South African missions abroad;
  • Knowledge of embassy protocol;
  • Self-control and drive, positive attitude;
  • Meticulousness and responsibility;
  • Commitment to student success;

  • Overseeing and managing the scholarship awards;
  • Staying abreast of trends in recruitment and processes;
  •  Managing data, reporting and exercising confidentiality (POPI Act.)
