The Faculty of Veterinary Science, as the only Faculty of its kind in South Africa, has a unique responsibility in training all veterinarians and veterinary nurses. The Faculty is looking for a highly skilled and experienced researcher; laboratory manager or veterinary laboratory professional to assist with producing a business plan towards amalgamating the Faculty laboratories into a single laboratory entity.
POST OVERVIEW
The Laboratory Manager will oversee the integration of all income-bearing laboratories within the Faculty into a single, cohesive entity. This role will involve developing a new business plan towards the implementation of a unified management model, to ensure that the laboratories operate efficiently through the LIMS arm of the VetView software. The plan will need to consider how the laboratory unit will function administratively, including financial management/debtors control.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop a new business plan for the integrated laboratories; and undertake a cost analysis of said new business plan;
- Design a potential implementation strategy for the laboratory merger, including:
- Laboratory quality systems in accordance with SANAS requirements;
- Financial and procurement management including integrated debtors control/management for the laboratories;
- Coordination within the LIMS arm of the VetView software for laboratory operations;
- Design the flow between sample reception and the laboratories;
- Advice on staffing and other resource needs for the Unit;
- Advice on general administration requirements of the Unit; and
- Create a marketing strategy for the business unit.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A relevant Honours-degree in laboratory science or a related field;
- Six years’ experience in strategic laboratory management of which two years should include experience in managing staff, including administrative and technical staff;
- Experience with financial management;
- High-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders;
- Experience in establishing and managing collaborations/partnerships; and
- Knowledge of and experience with SANAS requirements.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Language and communication skills.;
- Excellent interpersonal skills; and
- Good computer skills (Windows, MS Office, internet).
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
- Relevant qualification in business management;
- Experience in working in an academic environment;
- Experience in laboratory and/or practice management;
- Involvement in laboratory research (either as researcher or supervisor);
- Acquaintance with laboratory market trends and industry regulations;
- Understanding of computerized business management systems, especially laboratory information systems;
- Dynamic leadership skills;
- Visionary and strong decision-making skills;
- Ability to perform under pressure; and
- Well-developed organizational skills.

Grade processing:
- Capturing data on the learning management system (LMS);
- Setting up and checking the processing and calculations involved in grade processing;
- Handling and capturing missing grades and accommodations for absentees;
- Assisting lecturers with finalisation of semester and exam marks;
- Uploading marks from the LMS to the University grade system (Peoplesoft).

Practical and tutorial support:
- Scheduling practicals and tutorials and assigning demonstrators and tutors to these (In collaboration with instructor/laboratory manager and lecturers.);
- Communicating practical and tutorial sessions to students;
- Managing practical and tutorial exceptions and exemptions;
- Managing the dividing of large courses into the various practical sessions and then into smaller groups;

Appointment of demonstrators and tutors:
- Compiling, updating and distributing advertisements in collaboration with the Head of Department;
- Assisting with the selection of demonstrators and tutors;
- Assisting with the appointment process and remuneration queries;
- Assisting with ad-hoc claims involving tutors and demonstrators;

Administrative support:
- Arranging for the printing of tests and exams;
- Storing exam and test scripts securely and arrange for delivery to venues on the day of the assessment;
- Scanning tests and exams and supervising markers and the marking process;
- Arranging for invigilators and confirming venues.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A Relevant National 3-year Diploma in a scientific discipline with at least three (3) years’ relevant experience in administration; OR
- Grade 12 with at least five (5) years’ relevant experience in administration;
- Experience with an LMS.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Administration: Proficient;
- Grade processing systems (LMS): Proficient;
- Data capturing: Proficient;
- Accuracy and attention to detail;
- Computer skills, including basic database management and proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel;
- Ability to convey information clearly and concisely to groups or individuals either verbally or in writing to ensure they understand the information and the message;
- Ability to manage coordinate tutors and demonstrators;
- Ability to build and maintain ongoing, collaborative working relationships with co-workers to achieve the goals of the work unit;
- Ability to actively participate as a member of a team to move toward the completion of goals;

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Lecturer:
- A BVSc or BVMCh degree or an equivalent veterinary qualification;
- Registration (or registrable) as a Veterinarian with SAVC;
- Demonstrate the potential to become competent lecturer at the undergraduate level; and
- Demonstrate strong potential to become an established specialist clinician in an academic environment.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Proven knowledge and competency in the field of interest;
- Research interest appropriate to the position;
- Commitment to obtain a further postgraduate qualification in reasonable time;

Lecturer:

- Support key research and academic technologies, including platforms such as the Power BI, Student Feedback systems and Readiness Surveys;
- Utilise research database infrastructure to support research activities (i.e. Snowflake, PSCS, Power BI);
- Assist stakeholders in utilising learning analytics dashboards effectively.

- Train key stakeholders on internal technologies and dashboards.
- Present findings at conferences and contribute to internal knowledge sharing.
- Collaborate across departments to promote data literacy and ensure data quality.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Honours degree in a Quantitative and Social Sciences Discipline;
- At least four years of experience in:
- Experience in quantitative research in a tertiary education environment or at a research entity
- Experience with data analysis programming languages (e.g., R / Python)
- Experience with data visualisation tools (e.g. Power BI)
- Experience in managing and maintaining research databases infrastructure (i.e. connection, ETL, access and reporting).
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Knowledge of communicating scientific results and principles to a variety of audiences;
- Knowledge of the Logical Framework, Design Thinking, or similar framework to evaluate outcomes and impact;
- In-depth knowledge of and insight into higher education theory and processes;
- Knowledge of quantitative research methodologies;
- Data analysis and the interpretation thereof;
- Project management (research and development);
- Research Consultant;
- Maintenance of research resources;
- Development and maintenance of databases;
- Quantitative data analysis;
- MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
- Development of assessment instruments for education research;
- Data visualisation and reporting of analytical data for decision-making (e.g. using Power BI);
- Ability to:
- allocate attention and resources to complete multiple tasks simultaneously;
- prioritise tasks to ensure their completion within designated timeframes;
- establish a set of tasks and activities associated with an intended outcome and timeline;
- provide oversight for project(s) and all related activities in that setting to include quality assurance and safety;
- to arrange and assign work to use resources efficiently;
- to develop plans to accomplish work operations and objectives;
- review and study relevant information from various sources to develop new information;
- to weigh alternative actions and make decisions that incorporate opinions, facts, tangible and/or intangible factors;
- Possesses the initiative and drive to set and achieve goals independently

- Microsoft Power Platform, i.e., Power Apps, Power Automate, and Power BI

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
