JOB PURPOSE:

Handle undergraduate and postgraduate placement functions, enquiries and student residence accounts of allocated residences utilizing the full capacity of these relevant residences within the guidelines as per residence placement policies.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidates’ responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: 

  • Student Residence Placements:
  • Handle undergraduate/postgraduate student recruitment and placement functions, enquiries and student residence accounts of allocated residences in line with placement policies and related procedures;
  • Update and process information on Residence Financial and Human Resources (PeopleSoft) system;
  • Plan the availability of accommodation for students;
  • Draw reports from Residence Financial and Human Resources (PeopleSoft) system for the provision of lists and report to House Committees, Heads of residences and Building Coordinators;
  • Draw information of student cases from Financial and Human Resources (PeopleSoft) system;
  • Request applications or motivations when required; receive and process applications on the system, summarize and prepare files for the committee;
  • Obtain information from students to be considered for a Directors’ placement and give input with regard to possible placements based on student cases handling disputes regarding residence enquiries;
  • Assess the eligibility of students’ applications in line with the placement policy;
  • Participate actively in the marketing of residences, and the recruitment of students into Residences, and strive to keep residences at full capacity;
  • Follow-up of the payment of the reservation levy and cancellations levies;
  • Conduct interim placements as places become available;
  • Process departures, notices for moving out and follow up on open places and internal room changes before any placement can take place;
  • Approve requests on merit from students for room changes or moving to another residence;
  • Manage waiting lists e.g., changes of residence, flats, rooms, and discretionary place requests, etc;
  • Supply monthly occupation statistics and reports.

 

  • Client Service and Communication:
  • Offer client service to walk-in, e-mail and telephonic clients at all times within prescribed turnaround times;
  • Handle the dedicated undergraduate/postgraduate e-mail address: Ensure daily feedback and follow-up on e-mails;
  • Add comments to the Residence Financial and Human Resources (PeopleSoft) system to enable colleagues to supply feedback based on the holistic contact history of a student;
  • Communicate with clients/students within the prescribed turnaround times;
  • Review and update existing communications;
  • Collect information and compile information leaflets as needed;
  • Proofread correspondence, publications, etc;
  • Adjust procedures and processes to enable improved communication with undergraduate and postgraduate students;
  • Provide the University Call Centre staff with relevant information to ensure the continuation of service quality to students;
  • Meet and interact with Building Coordinators of undergraduate and postgraduate residences to ensure that all queries with regards to residence placements are handled;
  • Assist in quality control of residence correspondence to students;
  • Positive and professional communication with colleagues to ensure respectful and healthy team coherence enabling effective outputs and meeting deadlines as a division;
  • Assist in handling queries from students in the leased and accredited residences.

 

  • Accounts and Finances:
  • Handle enquiries with regard to accounts and resolve general financial enquiries and calculations;
  • Handle first escalation disputes and refer to the relevant manager if a resolution cannot be achieved;
  • Follow-up on open rooms to ensure full utilization of capacity to prevent financial loss;
  • Update data on the system for departures, room changes etc. to rectify accounts;
  • Follow up on statistics and discrepancies regarding occupation and capacity of residence;
  • Follow up functions with regard to outstanding fees;
  • Follow up on outstanding reservation levies not paid;
  • Ensure that all students who are placed on the system are connected to a room so that student’s accounts are debited with residence fees;
  • Check and ensure the accuracy and correctness of residence fees.

 

  • General Administration and Enquiries:
  • Keep relevant statistics (excel) according to needs, keep filing up to date, keep records of relevant policies, procedures and guidelines according to needs;
  • File and draw documentation and management information;
  • Handle general enquiries as pertaining to the specific divisions within the department;
  • Liaise with executive management offices, other departments, relevant support services, faculties etc;
  • Assist and handle all delegated administrative functions pertaining to the leased residences and accreditation of privately-owned residences;
  • Assist colleagues in handling placement of all other students as delegated by the line manager;
  • Keep a record of enquiries on the Residence Placement System;
  • Order stationary in advance and keep a file for budget purposes.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Relevant National diploma with 3 years’ experience;
  • Or Grade 12 with 5 years’ experience;  
  • Experience in the following:
  • Experience in residence/housing placement at an academic or other corporate accommodation establishment;
  • Proven experience in a client service environment and handling of enquiries at all levels;
  • Administrative experience;
  • Financial experience including accounts and resolving relevant financial enquiries;
  • Experience in quality control of all formats of correspondence
  • Project planning;
  • Experience in management of guest reservation/placement of guests.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Knowledge of:
  • Relevant university residence policies and procedures;
  • Student finance and accounts processes.

 

  • Technical competencies:
  • Computer literate;
  • Database systems.

 

  • Behavioural competencies:
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective partnerships and working relations with people in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment;
  • Ability to actively participate as a member of a team to move toward the completion of goals;
  • Ability to deal with high stress situations calmly and effectively.

Senior Lecturer:

  • Substantial experience in research, supported by a sustained record and impact of publications in nationally and internationally accredited journals with a focus on one or more specialized fields of veterinary epidemiology;
  • Successful supervision of several students at Masters, PhD and post-doctoral levels; and
  • Evidence of exceptional academic scholarship.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Proven knowledge and competence in the field of veterinary epidemiology, with experience in the analysis and interpretation of animal health-related data;
  • Good quantitative skills, with experience in the use of one or more statistical software programmes used in veterinary epidemiology;
  • Research interest appropriate to the position;
  • Candidates without a PhD: Commitment to obtain a further postgraduate qualification in reasonable time;
  • Good language, communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills;
  • Generic teaching competence such as communication and presentation, word-processing, spreadsheets and social networking skills; and
  • Critical thinking ability.

  • Expertise in one or more specialised fields of epidemiology, such as spatial analysis, disease modelling, risk assessment or animal health economics, evidenced by publications in scientific journals;

The Department seeks an experienced veterinarian to join our dynamic team tasked with enhancing wildlife productivity and welfare, community and environmental health. This person will focus on clinical services, teaching and research in fields related to wildlife health.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

  • Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in medicine, surgery and management of wildlife;
  • Clinical service in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, the surrounding community and satellite clinics, including participation in a 24-hour service;
  • Postgraduate training and supervision;
  • Research and publication in scientific journals;
  • Networking with relevant industry stakeholders;
  • Community engagement;
  • Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department; and
  • Academic self-development.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • An appropriate MMedVet degree and/or equivalent speciality board certification in Zoo/Wildlife medicine;
  • Registration as a Wildlife Specialist with the SAVC, or eligibility for immediate registration;
  • At least two full research peer-reviewed papers in ISI-accredited scientific journals as first or senior author;
  • At least 4 years’ full-time experience in wildlife medicine and health;
  • Demonstrate the potential to become a competent lecturer at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development; and
  • Demonstrate strong potential to become an established researcher.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Commerce.
  • A postgraduate qualification in Commercial Law, with demonstrated competence in one or more of the following areas:
  • Company Law;
  • Banking Law;
  • Corporate Insolvency;
  • Liquidation Law;
  • Business Rescue.
  • Proven ability and experience in teaching the following subject areas:
  • Law of Contract and/or Specific Contracts;
  • Service modules in Commercial Law;
  • Modules covering the National Credit Act 34 of 2005 and the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008.
  • Evidence of teaching excellence at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Evidence of a successful teaching practice, teaching excellence and compliance with applicable Faculty and University performance standard on teaching;
  • Preference will be given to candidates whose teaching and research expertise complement and strengthen the Department’s established research focus areas;
  • Relevant industry, professional practice, or consulting experience in the field of Commercial Law;
  • An NRF research rating, positive and substantive peer-review evaluations, or other credible evidence of academic standing demonstrating local and/or international recognition in the candidate’s field of expertise (recommended);
  • An NRF rating, or a positive substantive peer review support, or other proof of academic standing, indicating local and international recognition in the field of expertise is recommended;
  • Substantial experience in curriculum development and curriculum transformation;
  • Evidence of community and public engagement being embedded in the candidate's research and/or teaching will be a strong recommendation;
  • Academic administration experience will also be a recommendation;
  • Demonstration of how community and public engagement can be integrated into the candidate’s teaching and research will be to the candidate’s advantage;
  • Experience in or exposure to postgraduate supervision will be to the candidate’s advantage;
  • Relevant tertiary or vocational teaching experience or post-qualification experience in the legal profession or related field will be a strong recommendation.

The Department seeks a dynamic veterinarian or animal scientist to contribute to teaching, research, and engagement in animal production systems and veterinary ethology, with a focus on sustainability, welfare, and applied animal management.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will actively participate in:

  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in:
  • Animal production systems within the South African context, including:
  • Animal recording, trait classification, and functional efficiency;
  • Sustainable extensive, semi-intensive, and intensive livestock systems;
  • Communal farming systems in Southern Africa; 
  • Game farming and conservation-based management systems;
  • Veterinary ethology and animal welfare, including:
  • Normal animal behaviour across domestic and wildlife species;
  • Welfare assessment and ethical animal management;
  • Safe, effective, and humane handling of animals;
  • Practical procedures essential for clinical examination;
  • Facilitation of practical and experiential training to ensure students develop competence in animal handling, welfare assessment, and production system evaluation;
  • Supervise postgraduate students and contribute to research outputs in accredited journals;
  • Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department; and
  • Academic self-development;
  • Develop collaborations with industry and community stakeholders;
  • Participate in community engagement, particularly in communal and emerging farming systems;
  • Perform administrative duties and contribute to departmental development; and
  • Academic self-development.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Lecturer:

  • BVSc or BVMCh or relevant Animal Science qualification;
  • Registration as a Veterinarian with SAVC;  
  • Experience in ruminant health, herd health, or animal production systems;
  • Demonstrated interest in teaching animal welfare, behaviour, and production systems; and
  • Evidence of research potential.

Senior Lecturer:

  • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or an equivalent veterinary qualification; 
  • An MSc with a focus on animal management;
  • Registration as a Veterinarian with SAVC;  
  • Five or more research-based full papers in an accredited scientific journal as senior author and/or co-author in the last five years; 
  • Proven teaching experience in animal production systems and/or veterinary ethology; and
  • Postgraduate supervision experience.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Strong knowledge of: 
  • Animal management systems in Southern Africa;
  • Animal behaviour, welfare, and handling;
  • Ability to integrate theory and practical training;
  • Commitment to developing innovative and context-relevant curricula;
  • Research interests appropriate to the position;
  • Candidates without a PhD: Commitment to obtain further postgraduate qualification in a reasonable time;
  • Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills;
  • Generic teaching competence such as communication and presentation, word-processing, spreadsheets and social networking skills; and
  • Critical thinking ability.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES:

  • Experience in animal welfare science or veterinary ethology;
  • Experience working with communal or emerging farming systems;
