The African Research, Implementation Science, and Education (ARISE) Network Projects are based at the Centre for Research in Health Systems (CRH) within the School of Nursing and Public Health at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). The ARISE Network is a multi-country research network focusing on adolescent health.
The ARISE Network, in collaboration with Heidelberg University and Technical University of Munich in Germany, along with Harvard University in the USA, is conducting a second round of data collection for an ongoing project.
The project, called NUTRINT (Policies in Sub-Saharan Africa and Reducing Nutrition-Related Noncommunicable Diseases in Adolescence and Youth: Interventions and Policies to Boost Nutrition Fluency and Diet Quality in Africa) is funded by the EU Horizon program and focuses on improving nutrition and healthy lifestyles among adolescents in Sub-Saharan Africa. It aims to reduce the risk of diet-related diseases by exploring policies and interventions that promote better nutrition knowledge and healthier eating habits
The South African ARISE Network is seeking to hire seven fieldworkers to assist with follow-up data collection for the ARISE NUTRINT project.
The selected candidates will be primarily based at the USINGA HDSS site (ward 79 and 82) in Umlazi township, Durban.
Duties and responsibilities
• Recruit and enrol adolescents (aged 10-24 years) from the study site,
• Follow up and retain enrolled participants from wave one data collection,
• Collecting data using a standardized survey instrument,
• Perform a finger prick for a haemoglobin test to assess adolescent anaemia status and measure height and weight,
• Tracking and tracing selected adolescents for study activities,
• Referring to appropriate health services where appropriate,
• Assisting the project coordinator and data manager in achieving all stipulated Quality Assurance targets
Minimum Requirements:
• Grade 12
• 1-year experience in administering interview batteries, redcap, or similar software
• Research experience (home or community-based research),
• Willingness to work on weekends and late afternoon, if and when required,
• Computer Literacy (MS Office-word. Excel and PowerPoint)
• Reside in wards 79 or 82 in Umlazi where the study will be conducted.
• Drivers Licence
• Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Certification
Essential Requirements:
• Degree in a relevant discipline, such as Public Health/ Psychology and Social Work
• Have experience in working with adolescents,
• Experience making home visits for research or follow-up purposes
• Basic clinical assessment (measuring weight, height, and haemoglobin)
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Fluency in IsiZulu and English
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
