Job description

The successful candidate will be the administrator for the ACCI, providing administrative and financial services and the efficient support necessary for the ACCI in Plant Breeding. S/he will work closely with the Centre Director and the Project Leaders in the Plant Breeding Programme, assisting with the administration of their research projects and postgraduate students. 

The incumbent will report to the Director: African Centre for Crop Improvement.

 

Minimum requirements

  • Matric plus a one-year relevant qualification
  • Three years of relevant financial and administrative experience
  • Financial Administration and narrative reporting
  • Budgeting
  • Project and General Office Administration
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Suite, Internet/Email, Quicken, i-Enabler)
  • International travel arrangements

Job description

The African Centre for Crop Improvement within the School of Agriculture  and Science  has a research coordinator position for specific projects in the area of sorghum breeding and sugar beet agronomy.

The incumbent will be required to work closely with the project leaders in the Center to manage the project in its practical implementation; manage plant breeding and agronomic research in tunnels, fields and glasshouses at multiple research sites; and provide assistance in reporting to the funder on project progress.

 

The incumbent will report to the Director: African Centre for Crop Improvement.

Minimum requirements

  • PhD or Master's Degree in Plant Breeding
  • Five years of relevant work experience in the management of Plant Breeding or Plant Pathology projects
  • Experience in the publication of scientific publications and technical report writing in the fields of plant breeding and genetics
  • Knowledge of genetic and experimental designs and techniques in sorghum breeding and agronomy
  • Experience in the use of statistical and genetic software
  • A valid driving license for manual-shift, light vehicles

 

The appointment may be extended depending on continued funding from the external funder.

  • A relevant 3-year degree or diploma Majoring in Accounting.
  • 3 years’ relevant  experience within a creditors division.
  • Ability to scrutinize documents for compliance and accuracy.
  • Experience in processing supplier payments and creditors reconciliations.

Minimum Requirements for Senior Lecturer

  • A track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Master’s and/or PhD levels, appropriate for the level AND

Minimum Requirements for Associate Professor 

  • A minimum of eighteen (18) publications in peer-reviewed SAPSE-accredited journals
  • A sustained track record of successful supervision of Masters and/or PhD students in the last five (5) years
  • Evidence of curriculum development
  • Evidence of sustained and successful attraction of research grants from external sources, participating in international research projects and collaborative initiatives AND
  • Evidence of providing service in a leadership position/s (academic leader of discipline, programme coordinator/research unit)

  • Experience in teaching and learning, and assessment practices in a relevant field. This encompasses clinical supervision in either academic or clinical setting
  • Ability to make the necessary preparation and coordination of various teaching and examination schedules within the Discipline or clinical environment, AND
  • Evidence of involvement in community engagement programmes

A successful candidate at the Lecturer level will be expected to complete a PhD within 5 years of the date of assumption of duty.
