Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship 2026–2028 (24-month period)



Description: The Department of Sociology, University of Fort Hare, East London Campus has a vacancy for a full-time two-year postdoctoral research fellowship. The successful candidate will be required to work on research projects that focus on extractivism, environment and social sustainability, indigenous knowledge systems and small and medium scale economic activities in South Africa, SADC countries or any countries in Africa. The fellowship will be awarded on competitive basis with consideration given to prior scholarly achievements of the applicant. The fellowship is initially for two years and is renewable subject to outstanding performance of the fellow

 

Requirements:

  • The successful candidate will have a doctorate, completed in the last five years, in the social sciences (preferably with focus on extractivism, environment and sustainability) or related fields at a higher education institution in South Africa or abroad.
  • If not yet in possession of a doctoral degree, they need to submit a written statement from the Registrar (or equivalent) at the issuing University confirming that they satisfactorily fulfilled the University’s requirements for a doctoral degree at the time of application for a postdoctoral research fellowship. Details of the qualification and expected date of graduation should be included in the statement.
  • The successful candidate may not be in the employment of UFH (including Time on Task) at the time of taking the postdoctoral fellowship.
  • The successful candidate may not be employed in any other institution/company during their postdoctoral fellowship.
  • The successful candidate may be of any age, gender or nationality (subject only to the visa regulations of the Department of Home Affairs)
  • Preference will be given to South African females.

 

Conditions:

  • By the end of their first year, the PDRF is expected to have submitted papers amounting to 2 units for review on the topic of their postdoctoral research which meets the following minimum requirements
  • PDRF extending into their second and subsequent years are expected to have published (or have in-press) 2 units. All papers must be on the topic of postdoctoral research and details of the papers must be submitted by the host to the PGS office by the end of each renewal year.

 

Duration: The fellowship is valid for 24 months from the month of arrival and may be extended with evidence of good progress.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Agricultural & Environmental Economics 2026-2028


Description: The SARChI Chair in Circular Economy: Leveraging Smart Technologies for Sustainable Ecologies, Food Security and Climate Resilience at the University of Fort Hare, South Africa seeks to appoint a postdoctoral research fellow with strong agricultural & environmental economics background. The fellowship involves extensive travelling and field work. Possession of a Code B driver’s license will be an added advantage.

 

Requirements:

  • The successful candidate will preferably have a doctorate, completed in the last five years, in Agricultural Economics or Environmental Economics.at a higher education institution in South Africa or abroad.

Description: The Department of Applied Management, Administration and Ethical Leadership wish to appoint one Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PDRF) to focus on Workplace Well-being Practices of SMMEs in the Eastern Cape: Family vs Non-family Business Strategies.  The study incorporates a combination of quantitative and qualitative data collection methods using various small to medium-sized businesses in the Eastern Cape area. The candidate must be based in the East London precinct area.

Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship 2026–2028 (24-month period)

 

Description: We seek to recruit a postdoctoral researcher to work at the intersection of philosophy and political science, with specific reference to the relation between public governance and subjective agency within digitally mediated and globally networked socio-political realities. Preferred areas of research are preferably two (or more) of the following:

  • Philosophy of Technology
  • Political Science
  • Phenomenology / African Phenomenology
  • Critical Theory
  • Posthuman / Post-Anthropocentric Approaches
  • Cognitive Science

We may consider applications outside of these specified areas of research. 

African, or broadly Global South approaches, are welcomed.

 

Requirements:

  • The successful candidate will preferably have a doctorate, completed in the last five years, in philosophy and / or political science at a higher education institution in South Africa or abroad.
  • If not yet in possession of a doctoral degree, they need to submit a written statement from the Registrar (or equivalent) at the issuing University confirming that they satisfactorily fulfilled the University’s requirements for a doctoral degree at the time of application for a postdoctoral research fellowship. Details of the qualification and expected date of graduation should be included in the statement.
  • The successful candidate may not be in the employment of UFH (including Time on Task) at the time of taking the postdoctoral fellowship.
  • The successful candidate may not be employed in any other institution/company during their postdoctoral fellowship.
  • The successful candidate may be of any age, gender or nationality (subject only to the visa regulations of the Department of Home Affairs)
  • Preference will be given to South African females.

 

Conditions:

  • By the end of their first year, the PDRF is expected to have submitted papers amounting to 2 units for review on the topic of their postdoctoral research which meets the following minimum requirements
  • PDRF extending into their second and subsequent years are expected to have published (or have in-press) 2 units. All papers must be on the topic of the postdoctoral research and details of the papers must be submitted by the host to the PGS office by the end of each renewal year.

 

Duration: The fellowship is valid for 24 months from the month of arrival and may be extended with evidence of good progress.

Description: We seek to recruit a postdoctoral researcher to work on the historical intersections of race and class in South Africa, with specific reference to the ways in which official racial boundaries/categories were drawn/made/unmade and how these were undermined, crossed and defied in the course of everyday life and daily interactions by members of the ‘groups’ to whom they were supposed to have applied.

  • The successful candidate will have a doctorate, completed in the last five years, in anthropology, history, or cognate discipline at a higher education institution in South Africa or abroad.

Description: The Department of Business Innovations and Entrepreneurship wishes to appoint one Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PDRF) to focus on Digital Transformation, Artificial Intelligence and Multilingualism in Higher Education.  This fellowship supports a research programme focused on the development and evaluation of AI-enabled, multilingual, and inclusive learning environments in higher education. The project places particular emphasis on how artificial intelligence can be leveraged to support home-language learning, language accessibility, and equitable participation in digitally mediated teaching and learning contexts.

 

Requirements:

  • The successful candidate will preferably have a doctorate, completed in the last five years, in the following:
  • Information Systems
  • Educational Technology
  • Computer Science (with education or AI focus) .

  • Strong academic writing and publication track record or clear potential
  • Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary and diverse research contexts

 

Duration: The fellowship is valid for 24 months from the month of arrival and may be extended with evidence of good progress.
