Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship 2026–2028 (24-month period)

 

Description: The Department of Business Innovations and Entrepreneurship in the Faculty of Management and Commerce at the University of Fort Hare seeks to recruit 1 Post-Doctoral fellow for the year 2026. This position will support the ongoing research activities in the Department of Business Management with a special focus on women and youth entrepreneurship.

 

Requirements:

  • The successful candidate will preferably have a doctorate, completed in the last five years, in Business Management, Entrepreneurship or a related field at a higher education institution in South Africa or abroad.
  • If not yet in possession of a doctoral degree, they need to submit a written statement from the Registrar (or equivalent) at the issuing University confirming that they satisfactorily fulfilled the University’s requirements for a doctoral degree at the time of application for a postdoctoral research fellowship. Details of the qualification and expected date of graduation should be included in the statement.
  • The successful candidate may not be in the employment of UFH (including Time on Task) at the time of taking the postdoctoral fellowship.
  • The successful candidate may not be employed in any other institution/company during their postdoctoral fellowship.
  • The successful candidate may be of any age, gender or nationality (subject only to the visa regulations of the Department of Home Affairs)
  • Preference will be given to South African females.

 

Conditions:

  • By the end of their first year, the PDRF is expected to have submitted papers amounting to 2 units for review on the topic of their postdoctoral research which meets the following minimum requirements
  • PDRF extending into their second and subsequent years are expected to have published (or have in-press) 2 units. All papers must be on the topic of the postdoctoral research and details of the papers must be submitted by the host to the PGS office by the end of each renewal year.

Duration: The fellowship is valid for 24 months from the month of arrival and may be extended with evidence of good progress.

Description: The Department of Applied Management, Administration and Ethical Leadership wish to appoint one Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PDRF) to focus on Workplace Well-being Practices of SMMEs in the Eastern Cape: Family vs Non-family Business Strategies.  The study incorporates a combination of quantitative and qualitative data collection methods using various small to medium-sized businesses in the Eastern Cape area. The candidate must be based in the East London precinct area

  • Conduct innovative research and produce scholarly output on the well-being practices implemented by family-owned and non-family owned SMMEs in the Eastern Cape
  • Demonstrate relevant experience, understanding, and knowledge of quantitative and qualitative approaches.
  • Fieldwork experience
  • Strong academic writing abilities
  • Competence in data analysis (SPSS and Thematic)

  • The successful candidate will preferably have a doctorate completed in last five years in Public Administration, /Public Affairs/ Governance or a related field at a higher education institution in South Africa or abroad.
  • Applied knowledge of research administration, data collection, design, good computer skills, experience with statistical software such as SPSS, STATA, etc and qualitative data analysis.
  • If not yet in possession of a doctoral degree, they need to submit a written statement from the Registrar (or equivalent) at the issuing University confirming that they satisfactorily fulfilled the University’s requirements for a doctoral degree at the time of application for a postdoctoral research fellowship. Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship 2026–2028 (24-month period)

 

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in the Department of

Computational Sciences under the discipline of Pure and Applied Mathematics at the University of Fort Hare, under the supervision of Prof Dephney Mathebula. The fellowship forms part of an active research programme focusing on Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases using Multiscale Modelling Approaches.


The successful candidate will join a vibrant research environment dedicated to developing mathematical and computational models that integrate processes occurring at multiple biological scales, including within-host dynamics, population-level disease transmission, and public health control measures.



Research Focus

The successful candidate will contribute to research in one or more of the following areas:

  • Mathematical modelling of infectious diseases.
  • Multiscale modelling of host-pathogen interactions.
  • Within-host and between-host disease dynamics.
  • Numerical methods and scientific computing.
  • Data-driven infectious disease modelling.
  • Optimal control and intervention strategies.
  • Computational simulations and model validation.
  • Applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in epidemiological modelling.

 

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Hold a PhD in Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Modelling, Biomathematics, Computational Mathematics, or a closely related field.
  • Have obtained their doctoral degree within the last five (5) years.
  • Demonstrate evidence of research productivity through at least three (3) research articles in DHET-accredited journals.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical, mathematical, computational, and scientific writing skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team.

Preference will be given to:

  • South African citizens and permanent residents.
  • Female candidates.
  • Candidates whose research interests align closely with the research focus of the project.

 

Fellowship Value and Duration

  • The fellowship is valued at R300,000 per annum (tax-free).
  • The initial appointment will be for 24 months, subject to the University's Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Policy.
  • Renewal beyond the initial appointment period will be based on satisfactory performance and achievement of the required research outputs.

 

Expected Outputs

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Conduct high-quality research in mathematical modelling of infectious diseases.
  • Develop and analyse multiscale mathematical models.
  • Perform numerical simulations and computational analyses.
  • Publish research outputs in DIET-accredited journals.
  • Present research findings at national and international conferences.
  • Participate in departmental and faculty research activities.
  • Assist in strengthening postgraduate research capacity within the Department. Application Documents
